Makai Lemon, Southern California, Player News

Makai Lemon made 10 catches for 153 yards and a second-half touchdown, and No. 17 Southern California scored 19 unanswered points to keep its College Football Playoff hopes alive with a 26-21 victory over Iowa on Saturday. Jayden Maiava passed for 254 yards and Bryan Jackson rushed for two touchdowns for the Trojans (8-2, 6-1 Big Ten, No. 17 CFP), who faced their largest deficit of the season when they trailed 21-7 late in the second quarter at a rain-soaked Coliseum. USC mounted five consecutive scoring drives, capped by Jackson's go-ahead TD run with 13:36 to play. Mark Gronowski threw a touchdown pass, made a TD run and caught a scoring pass during the first half, but his Hawkeyes (6-4, 4-3, No. 21 CFP) got shut out in the second half of another heartbreaking loss to a ranked team. Iowa finally mounted a decent drive in the closing minutes, but turned it over on downs at the USC 29 with 1:59 to play. The Trojans were able to run out the clock after an Iowa assistant coach was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct with 1:25 left.

Steady rain had been falling on Los Angeles for more than 24 hours before kickoff, and it didn't stop during the wettest USC home game in recent memory. The Hawkeyes appeared to handle it better early on, with receiver Reece Vander Zee's 5-yard TD pass to Gronowski on a picture-perfect version of the Philly Special highlighting a strong first half. USC persevered and won thanks to another phenomenal game from star receivers Lemon and Ja'Kobi Lane, who had seven catches for 65 yards. Shrugging off the rain, run-first Iowa surprisingly threw the ball five times on its opening drive, capped by Dayton Howard's 2-yard TD catch from a scrambling Gronowski on fourth down. After USC failed to score in the first quarter at home for the first time all season, Gronowski rushed for a score early in the second. Jackson's 1-yard TD on a direct snap got USC on the board. Iowa then made another strong drive capped by the TD catch by Gronowski. He has caught a pass in all five seasons of his college football career, which began at South Dakota State. After Lemon's 12-yard TD catch, USC's Jahkeem Stewart intercepted a deflected pass in Iowa territory, leading to Jackson's second score. - USC/AP College Football

Makai Lemon had a touchdown catch and a scoring run while making 11 receptions for a career-high 161 yards, and No. 20 Southern California stayed in the College Football Playoff race with a 38-17 victory over Northwestern on Friday night. Jayden Maiava passed for 299 yards and hit Lemon and Ja'Kobi Lane for TDs as the Trojans (7-2, 5-1 Big Ten) remained unbeaten at the Coliseum this season with a persistent offensive performance featuring 482 total yards. That's the most allowed all season by the stingy Northwestern defense, which also hadn't allowed a 200-yard passer. King Miller rushed for 127 yards and a touchdown, and Maiava also rushed for a score. Lemon scored on a 4-yard jet sweep with 11:31 to play to put away back-to-back conference victories over Nebraska and Northwestern, keeping the Trojans in the national title conversation into mid-November for the first time since coach Lincoln Riley's first season in 2022. "We were excited about the challenge that this became," Riley said. "Flipping time zones, the tough battle in Lincoln just a few days ago, and then having to turn over and play a really good football team coming off a bye week. I just felt like these last two games would be a really important stretch for this season, and it's cool to see our guys respond." Preston Stone passed for 150 yards and Caleb Komolafe rushed for 118 yards and a score for the Wildcats (5-4, 3-3), who lost for just the second time in six games.

Griffin Wilde caught an early TD pass for Northwestern, which has never beaten USC in six meetings - the most recent in the 1996 Rose Bowl. USC got another spectacular performance from its impressive receiver duo. While the prolific Lemon put up 165 total yards, Lane had seven catches for 74 yards - and he put the Trojans up 28-14 midway through the third quarter when he juggled and controlled a one-handed TD catch under tight coverage from Fred Davis. "Whenever the ball is in the air, I just try to make the most out of the opportunity, because they don't come often," Lane said. After struggling to mount drives of significance while holding off Nebraska last week, USC opened its first home game in nearly a month with a 16-play drive culminating in Lemon's seventh TD catch of the season. Maiava had nine completions on the drive - the same number he managed all night in Lincoln. "I mean, we knew Nebraska was an outlier in their passing game," Wildcats coach David Braun said. "Nebraska had done a great job against USC, but you knew USC was going to find a way to respond. They're talented. Talented wide receivers. Quarterback plays at a very high level. Coach Riley is a great coach. And ultimately, we ended up playing on our heels most of the night." - USC/AP College Football

Makai Lemon made touchdown catches of 62 and 74 yards in the first quarter, Jayden Maiava passed for 412 yards and four scores, and Southern California trounced former coach Clay Helton's Georgia Southern 59-20 Saturday night. Waymond Jordan rushed for 167 yards and a touchdown, and Ja'Kobi Lane made an exceptional one-handed TD catch as the Trojans (2-0) racked up 755 total yards. Walker Lyons also caught a TD pass, while Eli Sanders ran for two scores. Helton spent parts of eight seasons as the head coach at USC, winning a Rose Bowl and a Pac-12 title. He also failed to achieve the national championship contention demanded of USC coaches before he was fired two games into the 2021 season. The Coliseum did the rare honor of welcoming Helton by name while he led Georgia Southern onto the famed field Saturday, although he was greeted mostly with boos.

Camden Brown caught two TD passes in the first half for the Eagles, who have begun Helton's fourth season with road losses to Fresno State and USC by a combined 101-34. In his second game at USC, juco transfer Jordan rushed for more yards than any tailback in Lincoln Riley's four-year tenure. Maiava's 412 yards passing were the 14th-most in USC history, boosted by four pass plays longer than 50 yards. But Georgia Southern led less than two minutes after the opening kickoff when Jordan fumbled and Brown caught a 32-yard TD pass from Weston Bryan on the first career throw by the freshman quarterback. USC answered with that one-handed TD catch by Lane, who hauled in Maiava's throw despite defensive pass interference. Less than two minutes later, Lemon turned a short reception into a 62-yard TD romp through the Eagles' secondary. Jordan made a 36-yard TD run early in the second half. King Miller made a 41-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. - USC/AP College Football
