Raleek Brown rushed for 255 yards, the third-most in Arizona State history, and had a pair of touchdowns to help the turnover-prone Sun Devils stay in Big 12 title contention with a 42-17 win over Colorado on Saturday night. The Sun Devils (8-3, 6-2) sti ll need help - Texas Tech and BYU both have one league loss - but go into the final week with a mathematical chance to play in the conference's championship game. Arizona State weathered three fumbles and an interception thanks to its stout defense. The Buffaloes mustered only three points off the miscues. The Sun Devils finished with 580 total yards, including 355 yards rushing. They outscored Colorado 29-10 in the second half. Brown averaged 11.6 yards per carry. The only blemish on his big nigh t was a fumble at the end of the third quarter when he jumped over a defender. But on his next carry - after the Sun Devils forced a fumble - Brown broke free for an 88-yard score that gave Arizona State a comfortable 28-17 lead with 13:31 remaining. It was a pivotal play in the game - the Buffaloes were driving before the fumble by Ronald Coleman on his first carry - and redemption for Brown. The program mark for most yards rushing in a game is held by Eno Benjamin, who had 312 yards against Oregon Sta te in 2018. Cam Skattebo rushed for 262 against Mississippi State last season. Jeff Sims threw for 206 yards and two TDs, including a slant route that Derek Eusebio turned into a 68-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Colorado (3-8, 1-7) closed out its home schedule with a 3-4 mark in coach Deion Sanders' third season. Freshman QB Julian "Ju Ju" Lewis finished 19 of 38 for 161 yards and a touchdown pass in his second career start (fourth game). He was sacked four times. Lewis can still redshirt if he d oesn't play next week. - Arizona State/AP College Football

Friday may not have been the first day of classes, but it had that type of vibe as USC football opened its first training camp of the Lincoln Riley era. "Didn't sleep very good last night," Riley said as his team walked off the field. "You're just kinda excited and ready for this day to go." It's a very different group of Trojans from this time last year. USC lost 54 players from the 2021 roster and returns only nine starters while adding 10 high school and junior college prospects and 20 transfers to t he locker room. Several of these new faces made their debuts in spring camp, but others were taking part in their first practice on Friday. Among the newcomers was running back Raleek Brown, the No. 2 prospect in the state of California in the 2022 class according to 247Sports.com.Brown was a significant figure soon after Riley was hired by USC in November. He became the first commitment of the head coach's tenure, and a fitting one at that. Not only did he come from traditional USC pipeline Mate r Dei, but he also was a pledge to Riley at Oklahoma. After missing out on spring practices while finishing up high school, Brown was hard to miss in his first day in cardinal and gold, even standing at 5-foot-8. "His speed on the field is noticeable. An d he's on the field with a lot of good athletes," Riley said. "Day 1 and backs are a little tough sometimes to fully evaluate when they're not in pads. But I thought he had a good summer with us. Athletically he does some things that are certainly exciti ng." Brown spent the summer working out with the team and getting acclimated to the new locker room. It didn't take him long to make an impression, even on the upperclassmen lifting weights with him. "Raleek has been quite the goofball," sixth-year cente r Brett Neilon said. "We like to chat it up and I mess with him and he messes with me." - Orange County Register
