2023 ALL-BIG TEN THIRD TEAM: Braelon Allen, Wisconsin,...Despite missing time due to an injury suffered against Ohio State, Allen still racked up 984 rushing yards in a new-look offense in 2023. Allen finished strong, tallying a season-high 165 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries in a rivalry win over Minnesota on Nov. 25. With a Big Ten-leading 5.4 yards per carry clip (min. 150 att.), Allen recorded his third-straight season with 150+ carries, 10+ touchdowns and a 5.25+ yards per carry average.< /p>He joined former Badger Jonathan Taylor as the only other Big Ten running back to reach those benchmarks in three separate seasons over the last 10 years. Wisconsin running back Braelon Allen says he is bypassing his senior season to enter the NFL draft. Allen announced his plans Tuesday in a video he posted on social media. "It's always been my dream to play in the NFL," Allen said. "And I believe I'm rea dy to chase that next step." In the video, Allen didn't indicate whether he plans to play in Wisconsin's bowl game. Wisconsin (7-5) will be making its 22nd consecutive bowl appearance this season. Allen has rushed for 3,494 yards over the last three seas ons and ranks ninth on Wisconsin's career rushing list. He has run for 35 touchdowns and has averaged 5.9 yards per carry.He ran for 165 yards on 26 carries in a 28-14 victory at Minnesota on Saturday that marked the fifth time in his career that he has rushed for at least 150 yards. After rushing for 1,268 yards as a freshman and 1,242 yards as a sophomore, Allen has run for 984 yards on 181 carries this season despite dealing with an ankle injury that sidelined him for one entire game and limit ed him to three carries in another. Wisconsin had a new coach on the sideline, with the interim coach still calling the shots. The Badgers had several new players in key positions, including quarterback. A long, sometimes-difficult season came to a conclusion with more adversity - and, eve ntually, a win. A 17-point lead nearly erased, Wisconsin dug down for one last defensive play to beat Oklahoma State 24-17 in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl on Tuesday night. "It ended exactly the way we wanted it to - we got the win," said Braelon Allen, who ran for 116 yards and scored on a 20-yard touchdown. Luke Fickell, hired away from Cincinnati after a trip to the College Football Playoff last season, joined the team on the sideline for the bowl game. He wasn't there to run the show, though; all the de cisions were left to interim coach Jim Leonhard.The Badgers had everything working in the first half. The offense had balance, the defense stifling while they built a 17-point lead. In the second half, Wisconsin (7-6) bogged down on the slippery C hase Field turf and the defense started giving up chunk plays as the Cowboys rode their way back. Cedrick Dort finally ended Oklahoma State's momentum, intercepting Garret Rangel's pass with three minutes left, preserving the Badgers' eighth win in their past nine bowl games. "This is what I envisioned what this was about from afar," Fickell said. "And that's what they've shown me over the last three and a half weeks: they want to be here, they want to do it together and they want to do it the right way ." Former coach Paul Chryst's staff had months to recruit Braelon Allen, to convince the standout from Fond du Lac High School that Wisconsin was the best place to realize his dreams of playing college football. New head coach Luke Fickell had days to recru it Allen, to convince him that staying at UW was the best option for the tailback's third and perhaps final college season. "We talked about his potential, his development of what he could do, hopefully, in the next 12 months," Fickell said. "He is a rea lly young kid. But most of our conversations have been getting to know each other. "I asked him to have that blind faith, to trust us and believe (in) us, in what we're going to do and how we're going to do it. "To me, it is all about: Do they really tru st you? So spent a little bit more time with him in particular. Just going through his history. How he ended up in college at 17 years old and things like that. "I think we have a pretty good connection and I'm happy to say I think he believes and trusts in what we're going to do."Allen obviously liked what he heard from Fickell because he decided to return to UW in 2023. "Everybody has got to buy into that, with a new staff," Allen said Thursday after bowl practice. "A lot of it is having trust, trust in him knowing what he has done with past teams...It was just getting to know each other, building that relationship." Wisconsin football coach Luke Fickell lost three more players to the transfer portal on Tuesday. However, it appears sophomore tailback Braelon Allen intends to return to UW in 2023. Tailback/returner Isaac Guerendo, reserve defensive back Semar Melvin a nd reserve tight end Jaylan Franklin have decided to leave UW. Not long after those developments, Allen wrote on Twitter: "Sources tell me Braelon Allen is a Wisconsin Badger." Wisconsin is bringing Cincinnati's Luke Fickell back to the Big Ten. Athletic director Chris McIntosh announced Sunday that the Badgers had hired Fickell to take over their football program after a successful run with the Bearcats. Fickell posted a 57-18 record in six seasons at Cincy and helped the Bearcats earn a College Football Playoff berth last year. The former Ohio State defensive lineman went 6-7 as the Buckeyes' interim coach in 2011 after Jim Tressel's resignation. "This is a destination job a t a program that I have admired from afar for years," Fickell said in a statement released by the university. "I am in total alignment with Chris McIntosh's vision for this program. There is a tremendous foundation here that I can't wait to build upon." Fickell informed the Bearcats players earlier Sunday that he was leaving the school. A person with knowledge of Fickell's decision told The Associated Press that veteran assistant coach Kerry Coombs was being named interim coach of the Bearcats.Fi ckell, 49, takes over for interim coach and former Badgers star player Jim Leonhard, who replaced Paul Chryst on Oct. 2. Chryst went 67-26 in 7 1/2 seasons. He was fired one day after the Badgers lost 34-10 at home to an Illinois team led by former Badge rs coach Bret Bielema. "Luke is one of the top football coaches in the country. He is a proven winner, recruiter and developer of players," McIntosh said in a statement. "Equally as important, he shares our values. Coach Fickell is focused on giving our student-athletes the best opportunities possible and is attuned to the changing landscape of college athletics. "I have every confidence that he will respect and honor the foundation that has been set for our football program over the years while embraci ng the exciting opportunities ahead." Isaac Guerendo ran for an 89-yard touchdown and combined with Braelon Allen for 233 yards rushing as Wisconsin defeated Maryland 23-10 on Saturday. Wisconsin (5-4, 3-3 Big Ten) improved to 3-1 under interim head coach Jim Leonhard, who was promoted from defensive coordinator after the firing of Paul Chryst last month. With rainy and windy conditions severely hindering each team's ability to throw the ball, Wisconsin's superior ground attack made the difference. Allen rushed for 119 yards on 23 carries a nd gave the Badgers the lead for good with a 9-yard touchdown that opened the scoring late in the first period. Guerendo ran 12 times for a career-high 114 yards, including the 89-yard score that made it 14-0 in the second quarter.Maryland quarter back Taulia Tagovailoa entered the day having completed 72.5% of his passes to rank fourth among all Football Bowl Subdivision players, but he went 10 of 23 for just 77 yards and was sacked five times. The lone touchdown for Maryland (6-3, 3-3) came on a 5-yard completion from Tagovailoa to Tai Felton with 57 seconds left in the game. Wisconsin's Graham Mertz was 5 of 18 for 77 yards. The Badgers' defense benefited from the return of Big Ten sacks leader Nick Herbig and safety Hunter Wohler to end Maryl and's string of 10 straight games in which it had scored at least 27 points. Herbig had missed Wisconsin's 35-24 victory over Purdue two weeks ago with a knee issue, while Wohler hadn't played since suffering a leg injury in the season opener. Braelon Allen rushed for three touchdowns to help lead Wisconsin to a 66-7 victory against New Mexico State Saturday. The three-TD performance for Allen matched a career high. The sophomore running back finished with 15 carries for 86 yards and three sco res for the Badgers (2-1), who rebounded from a 17-14 loss last week to Washington State. Allen broke away for a 39-yard rush for a score to give Wisconsin a 7-0 lead just 90 seconds into the game. Allen's effort marked just the third time in his last 12 games that he's been held under 100 yards. 2022 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD CANDIDATE: Braelon Allen (So.), Wisconsin,...As a true freshman running back, Braelon Allen was an absolute revelation for a Wisconsin Badgers offense that struggled mightily early in the season. Allen helped Wisconsin r eclaim their power running identity and get the Badgers back on track after a disappointing 1-3 start. It's truly hard to put into words just how important of a role he played in Wisconsin's in-season turnaround.In total, Braelon Allen carried the ball 157 times for 1,109 yards (7.1 yards per carry) - and 12 touchdowns. University of Wisconsin athletics donors have joined the name, image and likeness (NIL) arms race by forming a collective. The Varsity Collective, LLC launched Saturday with a website touting itself as the "premier destination for Wisconsin student-athle tes to identify business opportunities" and "establishing the right outlet for Wisconsin Badger student-athletes to participate in NIL deals." The collective will allow individuals and businesses to pool money to facilitate NIL deals for UW athletes. For mer UW quarterback Brooks Bollinger and UW grad and mega-donor Ted Kellner are quoted in the news release announcing the collective's launch.The collective is independent from the university, but its website features logos and other UW trademarks. Use of those Images had to be secured through Badger Sports Properties, according to a UW spokesperson. The collective's charitable fund was registered with the state Tuesday and lists Milwaukee law firm Foley and Lardner as its mailing address. College athletes have been able to earn money through NIL since July 1, 2021, when the NCAA adopted an interim policy allowing such sponsorships. Collectives have been making waves over the past six months, claiming to have put together six-and seven-figure pac kages for athletes in exchange for appearances, social media posts and other activities. Braelon Allen thought his week in Las Vegas was rather uneventful. After all, it's hard to really soak in Sin City when you're only 17 years old. He'll have to settle for his MVP award. Allen ran for 159 yards and Wisconsin drained the final 9:57 off the clock with an 18-play drive that sealed a 20-13 victory over Arizona State in the Las Vegas Bowl on Thursday night. Allen, a true freshman from Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin, had 101 yards by halftime for his eighth 100-yard game of the season.He averag ed 6.8 yards per carry this year, falling just short of joining NFL stars Melvin Gordon and Jonathan Taylor as the only Wisconsin running backs to average 7 yards per attempt over a full season. "Being able to have the season that I ended up having, I ca n't thank the guys enough for the support," said Allen, selected the game's MVP. "Keeping my head on straight and keep on encouraging me, just telling me my time was going to come. All the credit goes to the O-line and all the guys in the room." Braelon Allen continued a tradition of Wisconsin running backs steamrolling Nebraska defenses. Allen rushed for 228 yards and three touchdowns – including a tiebreaking 53-yarder with 3:50 remaining – to help No. 19 Wisconsin outlast Nebraska 35-28 f or its seventh consecutive victory Saturday. Wisconsin has beaten Nebraska eight straight times and typically has done it with dominant rushing performances, starting with the night when Melvin Gordon and Montee Ball each ran for over 200 yards in the 20 12 Big Ten championship game. Gordon rushed for a school-record 408 yards against Nebraska in 2014. Jonathan Taylor exceeded 200 yards against Nebraska three separate times. The Badgers (8-3, 6-2 Big Ten, No. 15 CFP) handed Nebraska (3-8, 1-7) its fifth straight loss and moved a step closer to playing for a conference title.Wisconsin will clinch its fourth Big Ten championship game appearance in the last six years if it wins its regular-season finale at Minnesota. Wisconsin is tied with No. 18 Iowa for first place in the West but owns the tiebreaker advantage because it beat the Hawkeyes 27-7 on Oct. 30. The Badgers kept their winning streak alive Saturday because Allen was spectacular on a day when their top-ranked defense wasn't as effective as usual. Allen's performance came with Gordon watching as an honorary captain. Allen, who considers t he Denver Broncos running back an idol and an inspiration, said it was surreal to shake his hand and talk to him before the game. "It started with the 408 against Nebraska," Allen said. "At the time, I was just finishing up my fifth-grade season. I hones tly didn't know if I even liked football at that point. I saw that game and that's kind of what sparked it all for me, trying to be like him one day." Allen, who had 22 carries, has rushed for over 100 yards in each of Wisconsin's last seven games. Braelon Allen understood the importance of his role following Chez Mellusi's injury, sidelining Wisconsin's leading rusher for the rest of the season. Allen handled that burden as effectively as he has accepted every other task assigned to him during his exceptional freshman season. The 17-year-old Allen rushed for 173 yards and three touchdowns to help No. 20 Wisconsin beat Northwestern 35-7 for its sixth consecutive victory on Saturday. "I told Chez I was going to finish the season for the both of us, " Allen said. Mellusi, who hurt his left knee during a 52-3 victory at Rutgers last week, entered Saturday's action ranked fifth in the Big Ten in rushing (815) and second in carries (173).Allen stepped up, continued his emergence that coincided w ith the start of Wisconsin's winning streak. He has rushed for over 100 yards in six straight games after totaling just 12 carries during Wisconsin's 1-3 start. He's the first Wisconsin true freshman to run for at least 100 yards in six consecutive games since Anthony Davis in 2001. "He knows how important he is to this group," Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst said. "He's got a great mix of he's humble, he's confident and I think today showed he's got a chance to be special." Wisconsin freshman running back Braelon Allen figures the Badgers got back to their their strengths. Graham Mertz completed just 5 of 8 passes for 52 yards. But it didn't matter with the Badgers running for 290 yards on 51 carries. "That's Wisconsin foot ball, that's what we're known for, imposing our will on defenses," Allen said. "We are finally getting back to our brand of football. It's worked for the longest time." Chez Mellusi ran for 149 yards and a touchdown and Allen had 140 yards and two scores to help Wisconsin beat No. 25 Purdue 30-13 on Saturday. Mellusi and Allen both had career highs for yards, with Mellusi carrying 27 carries and Allen 12 for the Badgers (4-3, 2-2 Big Ten).Wisconsin has won 15 straight against Purdue (4-3, 2-2 Big Ten). Allen fumbled in the first quarter but was able to gather himself. "Everyone was coming up to me and telling me to keep my head up," Allen said. "I knew I had to bounce back, forget about it and hold on to the football." Wisconsin coach Paul Chrys t said it was a matter of doing whatever would move the football. "We weren't great on third down and we got to be better there, but the running game was going and the way our defense was playing, if we can continue to do that, I thought that might be be st," Chryst said.
