After two dominant years on Iowa's defensive line despite never getting a college start, Lukas Van Ness is going to the NFL. Van Ness, a redshirt sophomore for the Hawkeyes, will forgo the final two years of his eligibility. The 6-foot-5, 275-pound nativ e of Barrington, Illinois, sent out his announcement on social media Tuesday. "My time at Iowa was very special, and I will always be a Hawkeye," Van Ness posted. "It was not an easy decision to leave the University of Iowa with remaining eligibility. It has been a lifelong dream of mine to play in the NFL."Van Ness said he plans to complete his degree at Iowa, but his days as a Hawkeye player are done. He was the other major third-year Iowa player with an NFL decision; punter Tory Taylor announc ed after Saturday's 21-0 win in the Music City Bowl that he would return for his fourth year. Van Ness had 13 sacks in his time at Iowa while being a versatile chess piece on Kelvin Bell's defensive line. He was an undersized defensive tackle a year ago and logged seven sacks, tying Joe Evans for the team lead. This year, he moved to defensive end during spring practice but wound up moving inside to help out with depth after Yahya Black's foot injury. Van Ness was often dispatched in obvious passing sit uations. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

Ohio State's number is $13 million. That's how much coach Ryan Day thinks Buckeye boosters need to raise annually for name, image and likeness to keep his roster in tact, according to a June Cleveland.com report. "I don't have that big of a number in min d," said Brad Heinrichs, the CEO of Iowa's Swarm Collective at a Tuesday news conference in University Heights. But still, the number at Iowa will probably have plenty of zeros at the end of it. "We're going to need several million dollars to help us go where we want to go," Heinrichs said. "Whether that's 5, 10, I'm not sure, but we've got a ways to go."At the same time, Heinrichs said he'll likely have a "better idea" of what's possible in 30 days. The Swarm Collective -- where any interested a thletes in football, men's basketball and women's basketball can profit from fans while supporting nonprofits -- is in its infancy after officially launching on Tuesday. The "several million dollars" number for NIL revenue may have some sticker shock, bu t it'd be a fraction of what Iowa Athletics receives annually in donations. - The Gazette

Iowa assistant defensive line coach Jay Niemann understands the looming expectations of his room this upcoming season. The Hawkeyes return eight of their top nine contributors from last year, equating to more than 75% of its production (total tackles, ta ckles for loss and sacks) returning. A trio of seniors headline the group in Joe Evans, Noah Shannon and John Waggoner. Junior Logan Lee has earned preseason All-Big Ten honors and sophomore Lukas Van Ness, the team's leading sack getter last season, has perhaps the highest ceiling and a new position, switching to defensive end full-time this year.On paper, there's plenty to be excited about and returning experience points to a breakout year for the group. But Niemann is tempering those expectati ons. "There's plenty of room for improvement," Niemann said. "You're never a finished products. And if you listen to some of the guys, even at the NFL level talk, guys that have eight, nine, ten years of experience, they're always trying to master their craft. They're always trying to find something to get better at always trying to find a way to improve their game. "We've got three seniors in Noah, John Waggoner, Joe Evans and they're leading the charge but I think all three of them will tell you that there's three or four things about the fundamental and technique aspect of their game they'd like to get better at." - Iowa City Press-Citizen
