Quarterback T.J. Finley will start Auburn's opener against Mercer, beating out two new transfers. Auburn announced in a Twitter post Sunday that Finley won the job. The one-time LSU starter had been battling former Oregon quarterback Robby Ashford and Te xas A&M transfer Zach Calzada for the starting job. Finley started Auburn's last three games after Bo Nix went down with a season-ending ankle injury. The Tigers lost all three to finish on a five-game slide but did take eventual national runner-up Alaba ma to overtime. Finley, who led a 98-yard, winning drive against Georgia State, completed 70 of 128 passes for 827 yards with six touchdowns last season. He was intercepted just once. Finley turned himself in to police with fall camp about to start on a misdemeanor warrant for attempting to elude a police officer. - AP College Football

Auburn quarterback T.J. Finley is expected to practice with the team when it takes the field for the first day of fall camp Friday following his misdemeanor charge Thursday. Auburn coach Bryan Harsin addressed the situation with Finley, who turned himsel f in to Auburn police Thursday morning after being charged with "attempt to elude" stemming from a traffic violation for failure to wear his helmet while driving his scooter. Harsin was brief in his remarks regarding Finley but said he was aware of the s ituation with the junior quarterback. "He's here," Harsin said. "He'll be here tonight, he'll practice tomorrow. We're aware of what's going on."According to Finley's attorney, Davis Whittelsey, the pending charges against the quarterback are a re sult of "a misunderstanding" and are being handled in Auburn municipal court, like all traffic citations are. In a statement Thursday afternoon, Auburn Police claimed that Finley eluded police on two separate occasions while driving on campus on July 26, with police terminating their pursuit in both instances "as a matter of safety" after Finley "committed several other traffic offenses" in the process. After turning himself into police Thursday morning, and being "arrested in obedience" at Lee County J ail, Finley was issued traffic citations, booked and subsequently released after being made eligible for a $3,000 recognizance bond that he signed himself. - Birmingham News

Auburn quarterback T.J. Finley was arrested Thursday after turning himself in on a misdemeanor warrant for attempting to elude a police officer. Auburn assistant police chief Clarence Stewart said in a statement that Finley also received traffic citation s and was booked at the Lee County Jail on $3,000 bond. The 20-year-old quarterback was later released. Auburn coach Bryan Harsin said Finley will practice with the team when preseason camp opens Friday. "We're aware of what's going on," Harsin said. Pol ice twice attempted to stop a male who was operating a motorcycle without a helmet in the same area on July 26, 2022, Stewart said. The man, who police identified as Finley, fled police "and committed several other traffic offenses in the process," Stewa rt said. "Officers terminated the pursuit on both occasions as a matter of safety," he said. Finley started the Tigers' final three games after a season-ending injury to Bo Nix. Auburn ended on a five-game losing streak. - AP College Football

Near the beginning of his opening statement at Southeastern Conference media days, Bryan Harsin brought up one of the most dramatic storylines of the college football offseason. "I know some of you out there looking at me didn't expect me to be here at t his time," Harsin said Thursday. "I'm going to dive into that here in just a second, address the gorilla in the room." The animal was Harsin's questionable job security. One season into his tenure, drama engulfed the Auburn football team, leading to an i nternal investigation in February by university leadership. The probe lasted a week."There was an inquiry," Harsin said. "It was uncomfortable. It was unfounded. It presented an opportunity for people to personally attack me, my family, and also o ur program. And it didn't work." Harsin survived, letting him coach a second season this fall. He'll try to prove he can move the program in the right direction. In his first season after replacing Gus Malzahan, Auburn started 6-2 before losing its last five games. But more concerning than the 6-7 record - or perhaps a cause of the team's collapse and first losing season since 2012 - Auburn experienced a shocking amount of upheaval during the offseason. Harsin replaced multiple assistants, and his first choice for a new offensive coordinator left after a month with the team. Eighteen players transferred, according to AL.com. - Baton Rouge Advocate

TJ Finley, Texas A&M transfer Zac Calzada, Oregon transfer Robby Ashford, and freshman Holden Geriner will enter fall camp hoping to emerge as the Tigers quarterback for the season-opener on Labor Day against Mercer at Jordan-Hare. "I'm excited about it, " Kiesau said. Sometimes it's like, 'Oh man, you got so many, guys.' That's a good thing because let's say you got three really good ones, if at the end of the day they're all competing against each other, well that guy's going, 'Whew, that guy behind me is pretty good; I better stay sharp or stay on my game and get completions.' It's going to help everybody out in that room because I believe competition brings out the best in any position, but it'll be more evident at the quarterback position." Finley is the most experienced in the room as an Auburn QB. He took over the reins as starting quarterback for Harsin when Bo Nix got injured during the comeback win at Jordan-Hare by Mississippi State. At times Finley flashed the skills necessary to win in the Southeastern Conference. He also struggled with accuracy, and the Tigers lost contests against South Carolina, Alabama, and the bowl game against Houston with Finley as the starter. Finley is the most familiar with what Harsin wants to do on offen se. He's ready for the competition. "Life is all about competition. When you think about it, life as a whole, you're always competing for a job, you know what I'm saying? Bringing those guys in only put fire in me to get better, which I needed, especiall y after the season like last year," Finley said. So, we're all supportive of each other, understand what's going on, and understand we're competing for one job, so may the best man win." - Birmingham News

Shedrick Jackson caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from T.J. Finley with 45 seconds remaining, and No. 23 Auburn rallied to beat Georgia State 34-24 on Saturday. Auburn trailed Georgia State by 12 points at halftime and avoided losing to a Sun Belt team fo r the first time in program history. Finley, an LSU transfer who replaced starting quarterback Bo Nix late in the third quarter, led Auburn (3-1) on a 98-yard scoring drive in the final minutes. Safety Smoke Monday sealed the victory, returning an interc eption 36 yards for a score on the second play of the ensuing drive. Led by running back Tucker Gregg, Georgia State (1-3) generated 299 yards of offense and 24 points before halftime, but was unable to add to its lead in the final quarters. The Tigers' special teams started the comeback with a touchdown off a blocked punt late in the third quarter, and their defense allowed only 85 yards in a second-half shutout. - Auburn/AP College Football

Auburn drew some attention earlier this summer when it added former LSU quarterback TJ Finley, who left LSU after taking over for an injured Myles Brennan only to lose the job to fellow freshman Max Johnson. As a result, Finley joined an Auburn quarterba ck room that featured two-year starter Bo Nix along with super senior Grant Loy and true freshman Dematrius Davis. Fans have talked a great deal about Finley's role during his first fall as an Auburn Tiger, but it isn't clear whether he is seen as a viab le candidate to start or instead a talented backup to Nix. There will likely be questions asked to Harsin or Nix about what Finley is expected to do this season. - Opelika-Auburn News

Bo Nix is no longer the only player on Auburn's roster with starting experience as an SEC quarterback. Former LSU quarterback TJ Finley committed to the Tigers Monday, choosing Auburn over the other three schools he announced as finalists - Penn State, H ouston and Alabama. At Auburn, Finley expects to get a chance to compete with Nix for the Tigers' starting quarterback job. If nothing else though, Auburn has added quality depth to its quarterback room and additional competition for the backup spot behi nd Nix on the Tigers' quarterback depth chart. Before Monday, Grant Loy - who threw for 1,137 yards at Bowling Green in 2019 - and freshman Dematrius Davis were the only scholarship QBs on the Tigers roster aside from Nix. While Finley ended the sp ring as LSU's No. 3 quarterback, the 6-foot-6, 240-pound Louisiana native started five games as a freshman last season and threw for 941 yards and five touchdowns with five interceptions. - Birmingham News

There's a date that looms large in the recruitment of former LSU quarterback TJ Finley - June 3. That's when the SEC's presidents are reportedly set to vote on whether to do away with the league's rule that requires intraconference transfers to sit out a season before being eligible. Although the NCAA passed a one-time transfer waiver this spring, that one hurdle is still in place in the SEC, and the status of that rule will factor into Finley's decision on where to transfer, he told AL.com on Sunday. | | | | |
