  2021 BIG SOUTH OFFENSIVE FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR (COACHES): Elijah Burris, RB, Hampton,...Burris is a finalist for the Stats Perform FCS Jerry Rice National Freshman of the Year Award, and led the Pirates with 640 rushing yards to rank first among all Big South freshmen and fifth overall in the league. He was fourth in the Big South in rushing yards per game (58.2), third in yards per rush (4.6) and tied for seventh with six rushing touchdowns. Burris was the FCS National Freshman of the Week after his 136-yard, 3-touchdown performance against Virginia Union in Week 1. His campaign also included 86 rushing yards and a 31-yard TD run in Hampton's win over North Carolina A&T, and 72 rushing yards with a score in the Pirates' victory over Howard. Burris led Hampton in rushing four times, and had two rushing touchdowns of at least 30 yards. He received six first-place votes and 30 points in the voting, ahead of Monmouth running back Jaden Shirden (six first-place votes and 22 points) and North Carolina A&T rusher Bhayshul Tuten (two first-place votes and 20 points). - Big South Football

  SEPT 6 BIG SOUTH CO-FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Hampton's Elijah Burris (Gastonia, N.C.) rushed 15 times for 136 yards and three touchdowns, and finished the day with 194 all-purpose yards in helping Hampton to a 42-28 win over Virginia Union. He scored the Pirates' final two touchdowns, and set-up the first one with a 51-yard kickoff return. Burris had consecutive 30-yard runs on the final scoring drive and reached the end zone on the second run to cap a 96-yard drive.   SEPT 6 STATS FCS NATIONAL FRESHMAN PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Elijah Burris, Hampton, RB, Fr., 5-10, 205, Gastonia, North Carolina,...Burris scored three touchdowns and totaled 194 all-purpose yards as Hampton beat Division II Virginia Union 42-28 in its first game since the 2019 season. In the 83th meeting of the series, Burris carried the ball 15 times for 136 yards, had two receptions for seven yards and returned a fourth-quarter kickoff 51 yards, which set up a drive that he capped with a TD to put the Pirates ahead 35-28. He later had a 30-yard score to put the game out of reach.   Elijah Burris carried 15 times for 136 yards and three touchdowns - two coming late in the fourth quarter - and Hampton pulled away for a 42-28 victory over Division II-member Virginia Union in a season opener on Saturday. VUU's Khalid Morris hooked up with Desmond Smith for a 41-yard TD, knotting the score at 28 with 11:08 remaining. But Burris ran the ensuing kickoff back 51 yards and then capped a four-play drive with a 1-yard scoring run with 9:05 to play. Burris ran 30 yards for a TD with 3:29 left to put the game out of reach.

Darran Butts ran for 143 yards on 11 carries with a TD for the Pirates. Jett Duffey was 24-of-35 passing for 242 yards and two TDs with two picks. Jadakis Bonds and KeyRon Catlett combined for 13 catches and 116 yards with a touchdown catch apiece. Morris completed 15 of 28 passes for 271 yards and two TDs with two interceptions for the Panthers. Charles Hall had six catches for 182 yards and a score. Hampton outgained VUU 611-395 and ran 28 more plays. - AP College Football
