A year ago, Auburn had a 28-3 lead in the first half against Mississippi State only to see the Bulldogs make a stunning comeback. Saturday's rematch was playing out the same way in reverse. Mississippi State built a 24-3 lead in the first half but the Bulldog offense stalled for about two and a half quarters and Auburn had two different leads in the final 5 minutes. Ultimately, the Bulldogs sent the game to overtime on a Massimo Biscardi 44-yard field goal and a 6-yard Jo'Quavious Marks touchdown run walked off the win, 39-33. "It was good at the end and good at the beginning. The defense, I thought, kept us in it," Mike Leach said. "Wins are hard no matter who you are and sometimes there are games like that. The toughest teams stick through it, battles and wins." The Bulldogs (6-3, 3-3 Southeastern Conference) blew a 24-3 lead and watched as the Tigers (3-6, 1-5) outscored them 27-9 in the second half.

But Mississippi State wound up handing Auburn its fifth consecutive loss, this time under interim coach and former Tigers running back Carnell Williams. The Tigers fired coach Bryan Harsin on Monday, the same day that MSU athletic director John Cohen left his alma mater to run Auburn's department. "I tip my hat to Mississippi State. Wow, what a game. Those kids fought hard," Williams said. "You're not going to win them all, but I'm so proud of my guys. There are so many life lessons that these kids are going to learn." Auburn's Anders Carlson pushed a 38-yard field goal attempt wide right to start overtime. Then the Bulldogs capitalized on freshman J.D. Rhym's pass interference on a deep ball to set up Marks' winning score. Will Rogers broke Dak Prescott's Bulldogs career passing yards and touchdowns records in the first quarter. But the Bulldogs' offense was stuck in neutral for most of the rest of the ball game - until it mattered most. State built a 24-3 lead in the first half only to see the Tigers work their way back into the game in the third quarter with 13 points thanks to a dropped snap on a punt and an interception from Rogers that closed the gap to 24-19. - Mississippi State/AP College Football

2022 PRESEASON PAUL HORNUNG AWARD WATCH LIST: Jo'Quavious Marks, Mississippi State,...Marks has certainly showcased his versatility during his first two seasons in Mike Leach's Air Raid offense. He has not only proven he can pick up yardage by carrying the football but can also be an effective option in the passing game as both a blocker and receiver out of the backfield. The 5-foot-10, 210-pounder from Atlanta, Georgia has rushed 176 times for 728 yards and nine touchdowns in his career while also hauling in 143 passes for 770 yards and three more scores. He has also returned 11 kickoffs for 231 yards. Marks broke the Bulldogs' receiving record for both a running back and a freshman in 2020 with his 60-catch season. Last fall, Marks' 83 catches were the most by a running back in the country and also topped all Southeastern Conference tailbacks with 502 receiving yards. - Mississippi State Football

Jo'quavious Marks doesn't mind sharing a backfield. The Mississippi State sophomore running back knows he'll be splitting time with fellow sophomore Dillon Johnson for the Bulldogs in 2021. Neither rusher would have it any other way. "He's going to tote the rock, I'm going to tote the rock, we're going to be proud of each other, and we're going to score touchdowns," Marks told reporters Thursday. Johnson called the pair of backs "lightning and thunder" - Johnson a power back who often proves elusive, Marks a speedy rusher with significant burst. "I think we complement each other just great," Johnson said.

Though Marks received more touches in the running and passing games in 2020, the two backs posted remarkably similar per-touch numbers. Marks averaged 4.5 yards per carry and 4.5 yards per reception; Johnson was just below at 4.4 yards per carry and 4.4 yards per catch. And now, Johnson said, both sophomore backs have made a big offseason leap after their true freshman seasons. "I feel like we both made a big jump from Year 1 to Year 2," he said. "I think it's because we've been in the system for a year, so I feel like both of us are comfortable. We feed off each other and we just love competing, so I think that's what it is." - The Dispatch
