  11/13/22 - QB Jayden de LaurarSr/2024, Arizona, 5-11, 207 (DS#40 QB) + More +

Jayden de Laura accounted for three touchdowns and had his fifth 300-yard passing game of the season as Arizona upset ninth-ranked UCLA 34-28 Saturday night, snapping an eight-game road losing streak against ranked teams. "That was a big win for the program. It meant a lot," coach Jedd Fisch said after Arizona's first road win over a Top 10 team since it defeated No. 2 Oregon in 2014. "That was a fun game. It was pretty good to hold that team to 28 points. That is one of the top five offenses in college football." Zach Charbonnet rushed for 181 yards and three touchdowns for the Bruins (8-2, 5-2 Pac-12), whose chances of making the Pac-12 title game took a big hit. "We ran into a good quarterback. He extended plays like no one we played this year and even since we've been here (in 2018). The plays he made running around were the difference in the game," said UCLA coach Chip Kelly of de Laura's play. de Laura completed 22 of 28 for 315 yards and two TDs.

He also ran in from 3-yards out during the second quarter to give the Wildcats (4-6, 2-5) a 21-14 halftime lead. The sophomore is averaging 340.1 passing yards with 18 touchdowns and a 64.7% completion rate in his last seven games. "We've had close games throughout the year but we didn't finish them. Knowing we were able to close this out is important for the last two games," de Laura said. Michael Wiley ran for 97 yards and scored two touchdowns while Jacob Cowing caught nine passes for 118 yards. The Wildcats were in the lead most of the night but fell behind 28-24 with 10:22 remaining in the fourth quarter when Charbonnet had a 5-yard TD. Arizona responded with an 8-play, 82-yard drive, capped by de Laura's 17-yard pass to Tetairoa McMillan on fourth-and-4 to go back on top 31-28. After UCLA turned the ball over on downs, Tyler Loop extended the lead to six with a 23-yard field goal with 1:07 remaining. The Bruins drove down to the Arizona 29, but Dorian Thompson-Robinson threw three straight incomplete passes. He had Jake Bobo wide open in the end zone on the final play of the game, but Bobo was unable to come up with it after making a diving attempt. Thompson-Robinson was 26 of 40 for 245 yards and a touchdown. - Arizona/AP College Football

  10/02/22 - QB Jayden de LaurarSr/2024, Arizona, 5-11, 207 (DS#40 QB) + More +

Jayden de Laura threw for 484 yards and tied a school record with six touchdowns, Jacob Cowing caught 12 passes for 180 yards and a touchdown and Arizona used that big night through the air to beat Colorado 43-20 on Saturday. There were several offensive stars for Arizona, but it was a particularly good night for Dorian Singer, who made a pair of highlight-reel catches. The second - a fingertip catch in the back of the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown - gave the Wildcats a 19-7 lead. Singer finished with nine catches for 163 yards.

Arizona (3-2, 1-1 Pac-12) is halfway to the six wins needed for bowl eligibility, one year after a dismal 1-11 campaign. The Wildcats rolled up 673 yards of total offense. It was another lopsided loss for the Buffs (0-5, 0-2), who lost their first four games by at least 25 points and weren't much better against the Wildcats. Colorado freshman Owen McCown completed 14 of 30 passes for 186 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 43 yards and a touchdown. The Wildcats took a 26-13 lead into halftime. The game could have been even more lopsided but Arizona couldn't convert on a few good opportunities. Among them: Singer's acrobatic one-handed grab for a 47-yard gain early in the second quarter put Arizona on Colorado's 3-yard line, but the Buffs stuffed the next four plays to keep the Wildcats out of the end zone. De Laura threw for 273 yards and four touchdowns before halftime. - Arizona/AP College Football

  09/18/22 - QB Jayden de LaurarSr/2024, Arizona, 5-11, 207 (DS#40 QB) + More +

As the final seconds ticked off the clock, Arizona's players sprinted down the field celebrating, knowing that a win over giant-slayer North Dakota State was no small feat. Six straight Football Bowl Subdivision teams had fallen to the Bison. A newly-revived Arizona program wasn't going to be the seventh. Jayden de Laura threw for 229 yards and a touchdown, ran for another score, and Arizona rallied to beat NDSU 31-28 on Saturday night. In the process, receiver Dorian Singer said he learned something about his Wildcats as Pac-12 play approaches. "When stuff hits the fan, if we have each other's back, we can beat anybody," said Singer, who finished with a team-high 88 yards receiving. The Wildcats snapped North Dakota State's FBS win streak at six games, dating to 2010.

The Bison have won nine out of the past 11 national championships at the FCS level and boast several NFL alumni - including quarterbacks Carson Wentz, Trey Lance and Easton Stick. Arizona was trailing 28-24 midway through the fourth quarter but got a crucial stop on fourth-and-2 at its own 23 to flip momentum. The Wildcats then drove the field and took a 31-28 lead on de Laura's perfectly placed 22-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Cowing in the corner of the end zone. Arizona's defense did the rest, holding NDSU's previously prolific running game in check. De Laura finished 20-of-29 passing. The Wildcats now have a 2-1 record one season after finishing with a 1-11 mark. "Our players did a fantastic job tonight," Arizona coach Jedd Fisch said. "It was a very clean football game. We were 4-for-4 in the red zone, no turnovers, one penalty." North Dakota State's Hunter Luepke scored three touchdowns - two on the ground and one through the air. He ran for 115 yards, leading the Bison's 283-yard rushing attack. - Arizona/AP College Football

Arizona's Sept. 3 game at San Diego State will start at 12:30 p.m. and air on CBS, the Aztecs announced on Wednesday morning. It'll be the first-ever game played at the Aztecs' new Snapdragon Stadium, which sits on the site of the old Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego's Mission Valley. SDSU's football program played the last two seasons in Carson, more than 100 miles away, while the new stadium was built. The 35,000-seat Snapdragon Stadium is half the size of the Aztecs' old home at Qualcomm. Expectations are higher this season for Arizona, which went 1-11 last season and winless in 2020. But a tough nonconference schedule could provide a hurdle for the Wildcats and their best-in-program-history freshman class. - Arizona Star News

Fisch is optimistic that the new QBs will catch on quicker - especially transfer Jayden de Laura, who's favored to start. De Laura appeared in 16 games for Washington State over the past two seasons, starting 15 of them. That gives him an inherent advantage. Last spring, the two scholarship quarterbacks who took most of the reps, Will Plummer and Gunner Cruz, had four combined college appearances. De Laura attempted 490 passes with the Cougars. Plummer (80) and Cruz (seven) had combined for 87. "I think the learning curve is very different," Fisch said, "just because of the fact that Jayden has a lot of inventory to pull from." One challenge that's common to all three quarterbacks is having to adjust to an offensive system that bears little resemblance to the ones they ran at previous stops.

Plummer operated a version of the spread offense. Cruz played in an Air Raid scheme, then the run-and-shoot, at Washington State. De Laura also ran the run-and-shoot at WSU. Fisch runs a pro-style system that's similar to the Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams' offense. The verbiage is more elaborate. The quarterback operates under center a good chunk of the time. The tight end plays a prominent role. All of that takes time to get used to. De Laura held the ball a beat or two too long at times during 7-on-7 Wednesday - a sign that he still has learning to do. It would have been more surprising if he had breezed through practice without a hiccup; after all, de Laura has been on campus for only a couple of months. - Arizona Star News

Washington State was counted out when its head coach and four assistants were fired for refusing the state's vaccination mandate. No way could the Cougars recover from adversity like that. They showed a bit of moxy in a loss to BYU last week and took it a step further against Arizona State behind an opportunistic defense. Jayden de Laura accounted for three touchdowns and Washington State forced five turnovers in a 34-21 win over Arizona State on Saturday. "Ultimately, we know what we have in our building," Washington State edge rusher Ron Stone, Jr. said. "We have what we need in our building to be successful, so there was never any doubt." The Cougars (5-4, 4-2 Pac-12), one of the nation's best at creating takeaways, were at their ball-hawking best in the first half, forcing four turnovers.

Washington State's offense capitalized, scoring 24 points after Arizona State turnovers for its first win since coach Nick Rolovich and four assistants were fired on Oct. 18. "By no means did we play the underdog card," Washington State acting head coach and defensive coordinator Jake Dickert said. "We're confident in our ability, confident in what we can do and we're playing good football at the right part of the season." Arizona State is not. The Sun Devils (5-3, 3-2) got off to an abysmal start coming off a bye week, turning it over on their opening three drives, including twice in the first three plays. Jayden Daniels threw two interceptions and Arizona State lost three fumbles to suffer a second straight lackluster defeat that had fans inside Sun Devil Stadium booing throughout. - Washington State/AP College Football

Jayden de Laura threw for 399 yards and three touchdowns as Washington State beat Oregon State 31-24 on Saturday. Travell Harris caught eight passes for 147 yards for the Cougars (3-3, 2-2 Pac-12), who beat Oregon State for the eighth consecutive time. B.J. Baylor rushed for 145 yards and Deshaun Fenwick added 127 yards and a pair of touchdowns for Oregon State (4-2, 2-1 Pac-12), which saw its four-game winning streak broken. De Laura completed 32 of 46 passes and was intercepted once. The Washington State defense also forced Oregon State to turn the ball over on downs during its last possession of the game.

Jack Colletto ran up the middle for two yards and an Oregon State touchdown in the opening seconds of the second quarter. Washington State replied with Dean Janikowski's 30-yard field goal. Everett Hayes kicked a 39-yard field goal to lift Oregon State to a 10-3 lead late in the second quarter. The Cougars drove to the Oregon State 7 on their next possession, but had to turn the ball over on downs. Oregon State quarterback Chance Nolan was intercepted by George Hicks III, giving the Cougars the ball at the Oregon State 28 with less than a minute remaining in the second quarter. The Cougars drove down to the 4, but Omar Speights intercepted de Laura's pass and OSU led 10-3 at halftime. - Washington State/AP College Football

Jayden de Laura passed for three touchdowns, two to Calvin Jackson Jr. who made a spectacular one-handed grab near the corner of the end zone, and Washington State beat California 21-6 on Saturday. Playing for the first time since suffering a leg injury against Southern California two weeks ago, de Laura matched his career-best of 25 completions on 41 attempts for 219 yards with two interceptions to help the Cougars (2-3, 1-2 Pac-12) to their first win at Memorial Stadium since 2013.

Jackson finished with six catches for 53 yards. De'Zhaun Stribling added an 8-yard score and Washington State's defense had five sacks and held the Golden Bears (1-4, 0-2) to 273 yards of offense. Cal quarterback Chase Garbers failed to throw a touchdown pass for the first time this season and was limited to 152 yards passing, 44 of them coming on one play for the Golden Bears (1-4, 0-2). It was the first meeting between the two teams since 2019. Last year's game was canceled two hours before kickoff due to COVID-19 protocol issues within Cal's program. - Washington State/AP College Football

Jayden de Laura threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score as Washington State beat Portland State 44-24 on Saturday. Deon McIntosh rushed for 64 yards and a touchdown and Max Borghi added 59 yards and a touchdown for Washington State (1-1), which rebounded from a last-minute loss to Utah State at home last weekend. Travell Harris had 188 all-purpose yards and caught two touchdown passes. Davis Alexander threw for 318 yards and two touchdowns for Portland State (0-2), an FCS program which upset Washington State in Pullman the last time the teams played in 2015. His favorite target was Beau Kelly, who caught 10 passes for 152 yards.

Portland State, a member of the Big Sky Conference, fell to 4-42 all-time against FBS teams. Washington State blew the game open in the second quarter when it switched to a hurry-up offense and scored on four straight possessions to take a 30-10 lead at halftime. "Jayden plays good at that pace," WSU coach Nick Rolovich said. "It was very effective today." "This was in our plans," Rolovich said. Also effective was the WSU running game, which gained 159 yards on an average of 4.8 yards per carry. Rolovich said he was dissatisfied with how often his quarterbacks checked out of running plays during the loss to Utah State. "We threw it too much when it should have been handed off," Rolovich said of the Utah State game. As a result, "we took out some pre-snap decisions for the quarterback." - Washington State/AP College Football

Over the past six months, since the incident that briefly derailed his college football career, Jayden de Laura probably felt like he was in no position to turn down advice and knowledge from those with more wisdom and life experience than Washington State's 19-year-old quarterback. De Laura's elders have played a role, certainly, but it was someone who's celebrated fewer birthdays than even de Laura who delivered the message that really hit home. At some point while de Laura served a four-month suspension from WSU's football team after being arrested in February on suspicion of driving under the influence - a charge Whitman County District Court found him not guilty of last week - the quarterback heard from his high school-age brother, an aspiring college receiver entering his junior year at Honolulu's Saint Louis.

Jaysen de Laura's words - or maybe it was the courage he showed to address the topic at all with an older sibling - left a surprising imprint on Jayden. "For me I would say (the conversation) with my brother," de Laura said Friday when asked to recall a meaningful conversation from the past six months. "He kind of told me like, what am I doing? He kind of told me I was wasting my time." For the first time since WSU's season-ending loss at Utah in December, de Laura was back on the field taking snaps and slinging passes in the No. 4 jersey, as one of three QBs in a race to win the Cougars' starting job along with returning backup Cammon Cooper and Tennessee graduate transfer Jarrett Guarantano. - Seattle Times

Jayden de Laura was found not guilty of misdemeanor DUI charges Thursday and expressed sorrow in a lengthy letter posted to his Twitter account Thursday - the Washington State quarterback's first public comments since the incident in February. In February, de Laura was arrested by Pullman police on suspicion of misdemeanor DUI charges after going the wrong way on Thatuna Street and driving through a stop sign in the College Hill area of the WSU campus. De Laura failed a sobriety test and refused a Breathalyzer, Pullman police told The Spokesman-Review the day after the incident. - Spokesman-Review

Washington State starting quarterback Jayden de Laura has been suspended from the team after his arrest in Pullman on suspicion of driving under the influence. The freshman started all four games for Washington State last fall. The Spokesman-Review reports that the 19-year-old de Laura was arrested on a misdemeanor DUI charge early Saturday. According to police, de Laura was pulled over at 2:13 a.m. after driving through a stop sign and subsequently driving the wrong way. De Laura failed a field sobriety test, but police weren’t able to register his blood-alcohol level after he refused to take a breathalyzer test. - AP College Football

The Honolulu native became the first true freshman to start for Washington State in a season opener and didn't stop there. De Laura's college debut went better than scripted, as the Hawaiian signal-caller accounted for three touchdowns in Washington State's 38-28 win over Oregon State. With his ability to scramble, de Laura added an element to WSU's offense the Cougars haven't seen in years, and perhaps not since another Saint Louis High graduate, Jason Gesser, played in Pullman. De Laura ran for one touchdown and finished with eight carries for 43 yards. He completed 18-of-33 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns through the air. - Spokesman-Review

Jayden de Laura passed for two touchdowns and ran for a score in his college debut, leading Washington State to a 38-28 victory Saturday night over Oregon State in the Pac-12 opener for both schools. De Laura, a 6-foot, 195-pound freshman from Honolulu, completed 18 of 33 passes for 227 yards and also rushed for 43 yards. Deon McIntosh had 147 yards rushing and a touchdown as the Cougars amassed 456 total yards. Nick Rolovich got a win in his first game as coach at Washington State, which was without running back Max Borghi. The junior has 28 career touchdowns, including 16 last season.

The Beavers rallied late behind quarterback Tristan Gebbia and cut the lead to 31-28 with 2:39 remaining on Jermar Jefferson's 15-yard run, and Gebbia's 2-point conversion pass to Trevon Bradford. But Washington State recovered the on-side kick and scored on the next play - a 44-yard touchdown run by Travell Harris. Gebbia passed for 329 yards and a touchdown, and Jefferson ran for 120 yards and three scores, but it wasn't enough for the Beavers, who haven't had a winning season since 2013. Washington State extended its lead to 28-7 on de Laura's 28-yard touchdown pass to Harris midway through the third quarter. - AP College Football
