OCT 31 SOCON SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Devron Harper, Jr., WR, Mercer, Conyers, Ga.,...Mercer wide receiver Devron Harper had a school-record 293 all-purpose yards as the Bears rolled to a 55-14 win at VMI on Saturday. The highlight of the day fo r the junior from Conyers, Georgia, was his 87-yard punt return for a touchdown, the second-longest punt return in program history, to open the scoring in the first quarter. Harper finished the day with a school-record 126 yards on four punt returns (31. 5 yards per return) and had two kickoff returns for 65 yards (32.5 yards per return). Harper also added 22 yards rushing on four carries and 80 receiving yards on seven catches to surpass the prior school record for all-purpose yardage by 17 yards. Devron Harper caught a pair of touchdown passes and ran for a third and Mercer topped 40 points for the third time in five games as the Bears dominated Wofford, 42-7 in a Southern Conference game Saturday. Mercer beat Morehead State 63-13 in the season o pener and routed Gardner-Webb 42-7 last week. The Bears (4-1, 2-0) held Wofford to just 67 yards on 25 carries and held the Terriers to 154 passing yards with two interceptions.Seven runners combined for 224 rushing yards on 45 carries, with four different backs reaching the end zone. Austin Douglas carried 12 times for 73 yards to lead the Bears. Harper ran eight yards to cap Mercer's first possession, then pulled in a pair of Fred Payton touchdown passes in the third quarter - a four-yard toss to cap a nine-play, 84-yard drive and a 62-yard strike. Harper caught seven passes for 126 yards. Payton completed 20 of 26 passes for 330 yards. MARCH 1 BIG SOUTH SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Gardner-Webb return specialist Devron Harper returned three kickoffs for 84 yards (28.0 average) and four punts for 40 yards (10.0) - including a 41-yard punt return touchdown at the end of the third qu arter that extended GWU's lead to 28-20. He returned one kickoff 42 yards to set-up the Runnin' Bulldogs near midfield, and had a 37-yard kickoff return to give GWU the ball at its own 38-yard line. 2019 ALL-BIG SOUTH FIRST TEAM (COACHES): KR - Devron Harper, Fr., Gardner-Webb,...One of the most electric freshmen in the country, Harper posted 1,600 all-purpose yards in 2019 and announced his arrival on the college football scene very early with a 99 -yard touchdown return at Charlotte in August. Harper finished with 928 combined return yards, which ranks third nationally, and caught 51 passes for 653 yards and four touchdowns at receiver. He is the first man in league history to catch two passes of 70 yards or longer – doing so when he caught a 70-yard touchdown and broke a school record with a 90-yard reception in the Homecoming win over Hampton. Former GWU cornerback Jaylan Foster was a strong candidate during the 2016 season and went on to earn Big South Conference Freshman of the Year – and Freshman All-America honors that postseason. Harper burst onto the scene quickly, earning Big South Freshman of the Week honors following an electric debut at Charlotte on August 29. The 5-foot-10, 165-pound dynamo took a kickoff 99 yards to paydirt that evening and has continued to make big plays in the return game and as a big-play receiver.Through nine games this season, Harper has caught 31 passes for 499 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 16.1 yards per reception. OCT 14 BIG SOUTH FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Gardner-Webb wide receiver Devron Harper (Conyers, Ga.) caught four passes for 187 yards and a touchdown, and totaled 206 all-purpose yards in the Runnin' Bulldogs' victory over Hampton. Harper scored on a 70-yard c atch-and-run with 10:44 left in the second quarter to move GWU ahead, 21-17. Late in the third quarter, he converted a 90-yard pass play to the Pirates' three-yard line to set-up Gardner-Webb's go-ahead score.
