"First of all, Joey is an excellent human being," Malzahn said about Gatewood. "He's a very talented young man that obviously I coached before." The Bartram Trail product began his college career at Auburn under Malzahn, tak ing a redshirt as a freshman in 2018. UCF head coach Gus Malzahn addressed the addition of quarterback transfer Joey Gatewood to the Knights football program on Tuesday and had high praise for his former player at Auburn. "First of all, Joey is an excellent human being," Malzahn said about G atewood. "He's a very talented young man that obviously I coached before." Gatewood, who is now officially listed on the team's roster online, announced his decision to transfer to UCF over social media and enrolled at the university on Monday. Gatewood will the wear the uniform No. 7 for UCF according to the roster.Although he's part of the team and enrolled, it's unclear if Gatewood will be able to earn eligibility to play this season at UCF. The Bartram Trail product began his college career a t Auburn under Malzahn taking a redshirt as a freshman in 2018. The following year, Gatewood lost out on the starting quarterback spot to then-freshman Bo Nix, and decided to transfer to Kentucky for the 2020 season. Last year for the Wildcats, Gatewood played in seven games, rushing 25 times for 62 yards and completing 17-of-35 passes for 109 yards with one interception after becoming eligible to play on Sept. 30. Because he's transferred once before, Gatewood needs to apply for a waiver to see the fie ld this season for the Knights due to NCAA rules. "He's not eligible now," Malzahn said. "We'll look at waivers and all that, see what that looks like in the future." - Orlando Sentinel

Another former Auburn player will be joining Gus Malzahn at UCF. Quarterback Joey Gatewood, who started his career on the Plains before transferring to Kentucky, announced Sunday afternoon that he has committed to UCF following his departure from Lexingt on, Ky. "Fired up about the opportunity and ready to get to work," Gatewood said in a tweet announci ng his decision.A former four-star prospect in the 2018 class, Gatewood was rated as the No. 49 overall recruit in the country coming out of Bartram Trail High in Jacksonville, Fla. He was the highest-rated signee for Auburn in that recruiting cla ss, and he redshirted during the 2018 season while serving as the Tigers' third-team quarterback behind Jarrett Stidham and Malik Willis. Gatewood appeared in just one game as a true freshman, rushing for 28 yards in Auburn's Music City Bowl win against Purdue at the end of the season. - Birmingham News

Former Auburn quarterback Joey Gatewood is now looking for a third school. Gatewood will enter the NCAA transfer portal for a second time, Kentucky coach Mark Stoops said on Sunday. Stoops named Will Levis the Wildcats' starting quarterback for the Sept. 4 season-opener vs. Louisiana-Monroe, adding that Gatewood had chosen to leave the program. "I told him how much I appreciated how hard he's worked. I know he's been through this before so I knew it would be especially tough. Tough decision, not what he wanted to hear," Stoops said, via 247 Sports. "We had that discussion, had a good talk. He handled it completely professional and really appreciate him." Gatewood left Auburn in middle of the 2019 season after losing out to then-freshman Bo Nix for the starting quarterback job, and transferred to Kentucky the following January. He played in six games for the Wildcats in 2020 - starting a 14-3 loss to Georgia - completing 17 of 35 passes for 109 yards and an interception while also rushing for 62 yards on 25 carries. - Herald Leader

The Wildcats closed down spring practices completely to the media, so there's a bit of speculation involved here. However, the time does seem to be ripe for redshirt junior Joey Gatewood, the Auburn signee who mostly sat behind Bo Nix in 2019 and then go t minimal time behind Terry Wilson at Kentucky last year. Wilson, the only player in Kentucky history with 3,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards, is using his bonus year of eligibility granted by the NCAA at New Mexico.Gatewood has a sturdy 6-5, 221-pound frame and is the kind of dual-threat signal caller that looks ideal for newly installed offensive coordinator Liam Coen, who came over from a role as assistant quarterbacks coach with the Los Angeles Rams. Gatewood made one start last seas on, completing a check-down laden 15 of 25 passes for 91 yards while rushing for 23 yards against Georgia. His ascension to a starting role isn't etched in stone. Redshirt freshman Beau Allen is also in the mix, and Penn State transfer Will Levis, also a run-pass threat, will join the competition over the summer. - Northwest Arkansas Times

Only one of the quarterbacks currently on campus, Joey Gatewood, has started a game for UK. Beau Allen made brief appearances in two separate games last year. Reading much of anything into how they performed last season is somewhat trivial; they're getti ng a crash course this spring in new offensive coordinator Liam Coen's system, which puts an increased premium on footwork and has them taking snaps predominantly under center rather than in a shotgun formation. Through three practices, they've adapted w ell. "Our quarterbacks, they really know where to go with the football," head coach Mark Stoops said following Saturday's scrimmage, in which players wore pads. "Our completion percentage is extremely high, which I really like to see. Very few drops, ver y few footballs on the ground. I'm pleased with what I'm seeing."Gatewood is not a stranger to learning a new offense or coaching at the quarterback position. At Auburn, where he played eight games between the 2018 and 2019 seasons before transfer ring to Kentucky, he had two offensive coordinators: Chip Lindsey, who left to become the head coach at Troy following the 2018 season, and Kenny Dillingham, who bolted for Florida State following the 2019 campaign. Coen is Gatewood's fourth coordinator in as many seasons at the college level. "From Auburn to Kentucky, Kentucky last season to now with a new OC, I'm putting everything together and really just trying to make it one," Gatewood said. "I feel like if I could get that done and I keep on striv ing every day as well as my teammates with me, I think we'll be pretty good." - Herald Leader

Joey Gatewood is on the verge of getting his first chance at being a starting quarterback. The former Auburn QB is likely to get the start for Kentucky when the team faces Georgia on Saturday, according to sources. Terry Wilson, the Wildcats' starting qu arterback in the team's first five games, is dealing with a throwing hand injury, hasn't taken part in Kentucky's first two practices of the week and it appears unlikely he'll play against Georgia, per sources. Gatewood, who left Auburn last October befo re later transferring to Kentucky, has appeared in three games thus far for the Wildcats as a backup quarterback. That includes some reps last week with Wilson struggling during Kentucky's loss to Missouri. The former top-50 recruit threw three passes an d had a 12-yard completion. He also had three carries for six yards. - Birmingham News

Kentucky football's options at quarterback are increasing after a week-one loss to Auburn. Auburn transfer Joey Gatewood has been cleared to play the rest of the season by the Southeastern Conference, UK coach Mark Stoops announced on Wednesday. The SEC approved Gatewood's waiver request and others for players transferring from one league school to another due to "current circumstances resulting from disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic." Stoops had previously indicated Gatewood had been approved for a NCAA waiver to play this season instead of sitting out the normal year required of FBS transfers, but the SEC also had to approve a waiver for him to play since he was transferring from one conference program to another.Gatewood, a former t op-50 recruit in the 2018 high school class, could push Wilson for the starting job if additional snaps are not enough for Wilson to fix the mistakes of the opener. For now, he will compete with freshman Beau Allen for the primary backup position. Stoops said after Thursday's practice that Allen had taken the majority of the second-team quarterback reps the last two weeks, but Gatewood had been used extensively in preseason practice. He declined to speculate on how the backup quarterback spot might be u sed moving forward. The No. 1-ranked athlete in the 2018 high school class according to the 247Sports Composite, Gatewood lost the Auburn starting job to freshman Bo Nix, the No. 1-ranked quarterback in the 2019 class and son of Auburn legend Patrick Nix , last fall. - Louisville Courier Journal

The 2020 season has started for Kentucky football, but the Wildcats are still waiting to learn if highly touted Auburn quarterback transfer Joey Gatewood can play this year. Gatewood, a former top-50 recruit, transferred to UK in January. Kentucky coach Mark Stoops has indicated the NCAA has cleared Gatewood to play this season, but he still needs an additional waiver from the SEC to avoid sitting this season because he is transferring from another SEC program. A rule change could be coming soon to let Gatewood play this season, Stoops said Monday. "We are trying to get the (SEC) rule changed," Stoops said. "That's above the head coaches' decision. It doesn't matter what we think. We need to talk to our presidents, and our presidents are voting on that . It's my understanding that we'll have a decision relatively quickly on that." Gatewood is not the only player in limbo due to the SEC rule. Tennessee offensive lineman Cade Mays and Ole Miss defensive back Otis Reese are also hoping to play for SEC tea ms this season after transferring from league foe Georgia. - Courier Journal

What is the status of Joey Gatewood's transfer waiver? Gatewood has declined to elaborate on his specific case for a waiver to the NCAA's normal requirement that FBS transfers sit out a year, but UK coaches have expressed confidence throughout the summer Gatewood would be cleared to play by the NCAA. UK has not officially announced the NCAA has granted the waiver, but in recent interviews coach Mark Stoops has said the school is now waiting on the SEC to clear Gatewood. Since Gatewood is transferring fr om one league school to another, the SEC must grant him a waiver to its requirement that all intra-league transfers sit out a season. "It is a two-part process: the NCAA and also the SEC because we're going from one SEC school to another," Stoops said on his Sept. 14 radio show. "I feel good about that as I mentioned last week, but you never know until it's done." On Monday, Stoops said he had not received any update on Gatewood's waiver. On Thursday, the UK coach said he was not optimistic that any new s would come before the team left Lexington to fly to Auburn for the opener. - Courier Journal

Kentucky football opened preseason practice Tuesday, but coach Mark Stoops is still waiting to learn if a key transfer will be eligible to play this fall. UK finished filing the paperwork for former Auburn quarterback Joey Gatewood's application for a tr ansfer waiver to allow him to play this fall earlier this summer, but the school has yet to hear back from the NCAA with a final ruling. "We expect an answer here relatively soon," Stoops said Tuesday before his team's first preseason practice. "I don't think it's appropriate to speculate on what I expect at this point in time."The No. 49 recruit and No. 1 athlete in the 2018 high school class according to the 247Sports Composite, Gatewood lost the Auburn starting job to freshman Bo Nix, the No. 1-ranked quarterback in the 2019 class and son of Auburn legend Patrick Nix, last fall. He appeared in seven games as Nix's backup, completing 5 of 7 passes for 54 yards and two touchdowns and gaining 149 yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries, before deciding to transfer. Gatewood has not revealed specifics about his case for a transfer waiver but confirmed to reporters in February he hoped the NCAA would allow him to play this season. Since Gatewood already redshirted at Auburn in 2018, he would los e a year of eligibility if unable to play this fall. - Courier Journal

It would have been understandable if Kentucky quarterback Terry Wilson had been hesitant about helping his coaches when Vince Marrow came searching for a player to host a high-profile recruit. Wilson was rehabbing his way back from a left knee injury tha t ended his 2019 season after just two games. The recruit was Auburn quarterback transfer Joey Gatewood, who was hoping to gain a waiver from the NCAA to play immediately for his new school in 2020. If Kentucky landed Gatewood and the waiver was granted, Wilson might be helping to woo the player who could take his starting job."Each recruit that we get, it's with open arms," Wilson said Saturday in his first interview with local reporters since the injury. "... He's a great player. He's big, he c an throw the ball. Anything I can do to get the players that we need for this football team, this university, I'm all in for it." Gatewood eventually committed to Kentucky and enrolled at UK for the spring semester. He is one of four healthy scholarship quarterbacks participating in spring practice as Wilson watches from the sideline. - Courier Journal
