Joe Milton III, Tennessee, Player News

College football fans who believe NIL deals and the transfer portal will be the ruination of their sport should love Tennessee quarterback Joe Milton. Never mind that he's a transfer himself. Milton has become the poster player for a more traditional era of college football. He won't be remembered as the quarterback who left Michigan after losing his starting job. He will be remembered as the quarterback who stayed at Tennessee after losing his starting job. This isn't just a Tennessee story. It's a nat ional one.College quarterbacks who lose their starting jobs are supposed to race toward the portal as if their career were about to go up in flames. But Milton stood his ground after losing his starting job to Hendon Hooker two games into the 2021 season. Instead of fleeing the scene, he became a close friend to the man who beat him out, and a team leader on a top-10 team. Then, when his friend went down to injury in the second-to-last game of the 2022 season, Milton quarterbacked the Vols to a 5 6-0 victory over Vanderbilt, and a 31-14 victory over top-10 Clemson in the Orange Bowl. Milton is known for a strong arm. But his strength of character has become just as apparent. - Knoxville News Sentinel

Tennessee football quarterback Joe Milton is among the early betting favorites for the 2023 Heisman Trophy. Milton is among a group tied for the sixth-best odds at +2000 to win the trophy for the most outstanding player in college football. USC's Caleb W illiams, the 2022 winner, is the betting favorite at +380 and leads a horde of Pac-12 quarterbacks near the top. Milton sits at +2000 alongside LSU QB Jayden Daniels, Notre Dame transfer QB Sam Hartman, Texas QB Quinn Ewers, Ohio State QB Kyle McCord and Clemson QB Cade Klubnik.Milton won his two starts, at Vanderbilt and against Clemson in the Orange Bowl, in 2022 after replacing the injured Hendon Hooker. Milton earned Orange Bowl MVP honors after passing for 251 yards and three touchdowns in t he win over the Tigers on Dec. 30. Milton, though, isn't the locked-in starter in 2023 just yet. 5-star freshman Nico Iamaleava enrolled early and will be competing for time in spring practice. - Knoxville News Sentinel

Joe Milton completed 19 of 28 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns, and No. 6 Tennessee finished off its best season in more than two decades by topping No. 10 Clemson 31-14 in the Orange Bowl on Friday night. Squirrel White, Bru McCoy and Ramel Key ton had the scoring catches for the Volunteers (11-2), who matched their best record since 2001. Jaylen Wright rushed for 89 yards and Jabari Small had a touchdown run for Tennessee. Cade Klubnik, making his first start for Clemson, completed 30 of 54 pa sses for 320 yards with two interceptions. But Clemson (11-3) just kept coming up empty on chances; the Tigers got into Tennessee territory on nine of their first 10 possessions - and turned those trips into only two field goals. Klubnik ran in from 4 ya rds out to get Clemson within 21-14 with 10:01 left, but Milton connected with Keyton for a 46-yard score on the next Tennessee possession. The Volunteers intercepted Klubnik on a desperation fourth-down heave about a minute later and the celebration was n't on yet - but looming.Workers began setting up the postgame stage, including the customary oranges that the winning team gets to toss during the trophy ceremony. And in this very orange Orange Bowl - both teams have it as their primary color - it was the Tennessee hue that was superior. Milton, the Orange Bowl MVP, opened the scoring with a 16-yard pass to McCoy late in the first, and Small's 2-yard rush pushed the lead to 14-0 with 9:03 left in the half. The nation's most prolific offense was n't at its best Friday night - Tennessee led the nation this year in yards and points per game - but it didn't have to be, either. Clemson got the ball seven times in the first half, getting inside Tennessee territory all seven times and getting to the V ols 25 or better on four occasions. And somehow, that only added up to three points. - Tennessee/AP College Football

Joe Milton knows he could have left Tennessee football this offseason if he wanted to. The senior quarterback had dropped to the backup quarterback spot behind Hendon Hooker, his classmate who is entrenched in the starting role. But he didn't think about looking to transfer. "For what?" Milton said Sunday. "No reason to. I am having fun. I am learning something new every day. I am enjoying life." Milton is back for the Vols for a second season alongside Hooker, the senior starter. He chose to stay in Kn oxville opposed to transferring for the second straight season.Milton started two games after transferring from Michigan prior to the 2021 season. He was 32-for-62 passing for 375 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. "I wouldn't say I l ost the starting job, "Milton said. "In life you face a lot of adversity. You want to kind of find your way through tough things in life." The 6-foot-5, 245-pound Milton is living a different life this preseason than he was a year ago. He entered this ti me last year in a four-person battle to be the starting quarterback. He ultimately won the spot and opened the season as the starter. Hooker was the backup. Milton suffered an injury against Pittsburgh on Sept. 11, which he said was two torn ligaments in his ankle. Hooker entered, performed well and never surrendered the starting job. - Knoxville News Sentinel

Milton arrived in Knoxville before the start of summer and managed to win the job late in preseason camp, but he was plagued by overthrows in his starts against Bowling Green and Pitt, when he was 18-of-35 for 189 yards and a touchdown. The most impressi ve play of his two starts was a 54-yard run against the Panthers. Milton replaced an injured Hooker late against Ole Miss and committed his biggest gaffe, opting for a 13-yard scramble instead of throwing for the end zone as time expired in a 31-26 defea t inside Neyland Stadium. The fact Milton lost his starting job yet remains in Knoxville may be the biggest testament to the culture Heupel has created. "Joe has been an amazing teammate this entire offseason," Vols quarterbacks coach Joey Halzle s aid earlier this spring. Joe Milton is doing all he can to prepare for his first Tennessee football start. The Michigan transfer quarterback has even studied how the Vols run onto the field at Neyland Stadium. "I have never been through it," Milton said on "Tennessee Prime" on T uesday. "I saw videos. But the videos I saw, they kind of went opposite ways. I know that is not how it goes now." Milton is in a familiar but different position heading into Tennessee's season opener against Bowling Green on Thursday (8 p.m. ET, SEC Net work). The junior won a quarterback battle at Michigan prior to the 2020 season. He did it again at Tennessee, winning the position during the preseason. But Milton felt differently when Vols coach Josh Heupel appointed him QB1. "My first time bein g named the starter at Michigan, I was very excited," Milton said. "I was walking around with my chest out. Just felt like I couldn't be touched. After my situation that happened over there and all that happened and I became the starter here, I was humbl ed. "I learned my lesson from what I did previously." - Knoxville News Sentinel

Josh Heupel sat in a high school football coach's office in 2017 when the question he traveled 1,100 miles to answer was asked. What would you do with Joe Milton? It surely intrigued Heupel, the Missouri offensive coordinator who was recruiting Milton, a blue-chip quarterback from Orlando's Olympia High. Milton had one of the strongest arms of any quarterback Heupel had seen. And that's saying a lot considering he coached two Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks and finished runner-up for the award himse lf as an Oklahoma quarterback.Heupel's answer surprised Kyle Hayes, the high school coach who asked it. Heupel said Milton should throw the football short and softly. "Just because a guy has a big arm, it doesn't mean they should only do big thing s with that arm," Hayes recalled Heupel telling him. "Give Joe confidence throws. Complete short passes, build his confidence and then take deep shots." That's the closest Heupel had come to coaching Milton, who played three seasons at Michigan, until he transferred to Tennessee this summer. Fast-forward four years from that recruiting visit, and Heupel and Milton are finally together. Coach and quarterback will debut for the Vols against Bowling Green on Thursday (8 p.m. ET, SEC Network) when that advi ce might be put to good use. Heupel announced Milton as his starting quarterback on Monday after a preseason competition with Virginia Tech transfer Hendon Hooker and sophomore Harrison Bailey. - Knoxville News Sentinel

Tennessee first-year coach Josh Heupel is turning to a former Wolverine to open the season as the team's starting quarterback. Heupel, who spent the previous three years at Central Florida, announced Monday that ex-Michigan quarterback Joe Milton will st art behind center for the Volunteers in their opener Thursday against Bowling Green. "Joe, his grasp on our offense in the short amount of time he developed here in the early portion of training camp, his acceleration of what we're doing, his physical at tributes and his decision-making led us to put the ball in his hands," Heupel said.Despite joining the program in April after spring practices, Milton beat out Virginia Tech transfer Hendon Hooker and sophomore Harrison Bailey, a top-100 recruit i n the 2020 class who started the final three games for Tennessee last season, for the No. 1 job. Last season at Michigan, Milton won the starting job over Cade McNamara and Dylan McCaffrey and had a solid start to the season, completing 15 of 22 passes f or 225 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 52 yards and a score in a win over Minnesota. - Ann Arbor News

Milton has zip, but what about touch? Milton has the reputation of having the strongest throwing arm of the group. That could come into play since Heupel values the deep ball in his explosive offensive system. But Milton's deep ball was nowhere to be see n. Specifically, quarterbacks only threw short and intermediate passes when practice was open to media. From that, it was clear that Milton has tremendous zip on the ball. His passes were darts, fast and accurate. That hints at the distance of his deep p asses. But it remains to be seen if he has touch. A couple of his short passes ricocheted off the hands of receivers because they arrived so quickly with no touch.Maybe it's more obvious because he's 6-5, but Milton held the football very low in t he pocket before he loaded it to pass. While waiting for a receiver to come open, the football was held near his waist. Perhaps it's a minor glitch in his mechanics, but it could become relevant because of the serious thumb injury to Milton's throwing ha nd that he suffered last season at Michigan. Milton is already a big target for pass rushers. If the football is held too low, they'll rake it when coming off the edge. Heupel values protecting the ball. His UCF team lost six fumbles in 10 games last sea son, the same as Pruitt's Vols. - Knoxville News Sentinel

There is a new dynamic in the Tennessee Volunteers quarterback room, and a sizable dynamic at that. Joe Milton, a graduate transfer from Michigan, announced Monday via Instagram that he will continue his career in Knoxville and join a mix that contained junior Brian Maurer, sophomore Harrison Bailey and Virginia Tech graduate transfer Hendon Hooker during the 15 spring practices that concluded Saturday with the first Orange & White game of the Josh Heupel era. At 6-foot-5 and 243 pounds, Milton is the b iggest participant in the bunch. Milton, who was in Knoxville this past weekend, played in 14 career games for the Wolverines and made five starts. He completed 80 of 141 passes (56.7%) for 1,077 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions. - Chatt anooga Times Free Press

Joe Milton has reportedly found a new home, and it's in the Southeastern Conference. The former Michigan quarterback is planning to transfer to the University of Tennessee this summer, according to a report Monday by Rocky Top Insider, a website devoted to covering the Volunteers, citing multiple unidentified sources. Milton has not yet announced the move, but a Joe Milton is currently listed in the school's online directory. He is on track to graduate from the University of Michigan next month. The 6-f oot-5, 243-pound quarterback entered his name into the NCAA's transfer portal in February, setting in motion his plan to depart Michigan. Milton appeared in 14 games for the Wolverines over three seasons, going from scout team quarterback to third on the depth chart to starter in 2020. In five starts, Milton completed 57 percent of his passes for 1,077 yards and four touchdowns. But he also threw four interceptions and regressed in his final three starts, leading to a change in quarterback against Penn State, in what turned out to be Michigan's regular-season finale. - Ann Arbor News

The former four-star prospect from Florida got off to a promising start in 2020 in his first year as the starter but stumbled down the stretch. He was replaced by Cade McNamara in Michigan's comeback victory against Rutgers in the fifth game of the seaso n and lost the starting job Week 6 against Penn State. All four of Milton's touchdown passes came during the first three games, while he completed fewer than 50% of his passes in each of the last three, albeit he only threw three against the Nittany Lion s in relief. Despite featuring a 6-foot-5, 243-pound frame with immense arm strength, Milton never hit his stride in Michigan's offense. With McNamara returning and the arrival of five-star freshman J.J. McCarthy, Milton entered the portal Feb. 18. He ha s three years of eligibility remaining but has not yet announced his new destination. - Ann Arbor News

Michigan quarterback Joe Milton has entered the transfer portal, depleting coach Jim Harbaugh's depth at the position. Milton made the announcement Thursday on Twitter. Milton wrote that he will have three years of eligibility remaining as a graduate tra nsfer. He won the starting job with the Wolverines last year after beating out Dylan McCaffrey. The brother of Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey chose not to come back to the program for a fourth year in 2020. He transferred last month t o play for his father, Ed, at Northern Colorado. Milton started strong in a 49-24 victory over then-No. 21 Minnesota last season, but he eventually lost his job to redshirt freshman Cade McNamara. - AP College Football

Michigan quarterback Joe Milton struggled late in the season with a thumb issue and is seen wearing a cast on his right hand in a recent Instagram post. Milton, who started five games as Michigan's quarterback last fall, had offseason surgery, according to a source close to the program. It is unclear when the surgery took place. The video posted on Instagram shows Milton playing with his dog and a cast protecting his hand and thumb. Michigan's top two coaches did their best to show public confidence in Joe Milton this week, even after the struggling quarterback was pulled from the game against Rutgers over the weekend. Jim Harbaugh, appearing on the "Inside Michigan Football" radio show Monday night, declined a second opportunity to name a starter for Saturday's upcoming game against Penn State (noon, ABC). Instead, Harbaugh used some of his time to defend Milton - who completed three of his four pass attempts, and even hit receive r Giles Jackson on a 31-yard completion early in the second quarter. "I thought he was playing good," Harbaugh said. "We hadn't gotten on the scoreboard yet and wanted to get Cade (McNamara) an opportunity - a shot at it - as well."But it seemed l ike every drive came with trouble. Receiver Cornelius Johnson fumbled the football away after catching an 18-yard pass on Michigan's first drive of the game, then Milton failed to pick up the necessary yardage on a fourth-and-1 play on the next drive. Th e Wolverines went three-and-out on their third drive, then had to settle for a 49-yard field goal by Quinn Nordin (that he missed) after Giles Jackson failed to come up with a third-down catch down the left sideline. Milton was 5 of 12 for 89 yards befor e coming out of the game for McNamara, a redshirt freshman, with Michigan already trailing 17-0. "There was nothing that Joe did wrong, or wasn't doing well," Harbaugh said. "(We) had the idea of both of them playing. And Cade came in and he got pretty d arn hot." - Ann Arbor News

After a promising start to the season against Minnesota, Joe Milton has struggled in the three games since. While he still showed glimpses of his potential against Michigan State and Indiana, he looked uncomfortable against the Badgers and was pulled in the third quarter. Redshirt freshman Cade McNamara came in and was sensational on his first drive, completing all three passes for 74 yards and a score, but he connected on just one of his next four passes for no gain. Coach Jim Harbaugh said after Satur day's loss that the staff needs to evaluate "everything" within his program. Could that signal a possible change at quarterback? We'll see. - Ann Arbor News

Joe Milton didn't turn the ball over again and threw for 300 yards, but the poise he showed against the Golden Gophers wasn't there against MSU. The Wolverines were able to pick up chunk plays in Week 1 without Milton having to air it out downfield, but that wasn't the case versus the Spartans. Milton didn't look as comfortable in the pocket Saturday, which partly can be attributed to the pressure MSU was getting. But he also forced some throws that weren't there and, at times, was a little too quick to scramble when his first read wasn't open.Overall, he completed just 32 of 51 attempts for zero touchdowns, while MSU's Rocky Lombardi threw for 323 yards and three scores on 17-of-32 passing. Milton did lead the team in rushing with 59 yards on 1 2 attempts, including picking up a hard-fought first down on a fourth-and-5 on Michigan's final drive. But overall, he was outplayed by Lombardi, by a lot. Michigan punted on eight of 12 possessions Saturday. - Ann Arbor News

It was only one game, but consider Urban Meyer impressed. The retired former Ohio State head coach-turned college football analyst appeared on Big Ten Network Monday to recap Week 1 in the league, and he liked what Michigan was doing. The Wolverines near ly compiled 500 yards of total offense, never turned the football over and rolled to a 49-24 road win at Minnesota. "Boy, I went back and rewatched it - and I thought (Josh) Gattis did a heck of a job," Meyer told host Rick Pizzo. "That's a legitimate sp read offense." Meyer, who once called Michigan's quarterback a "Cam Newton lookalike" for his strong arm, large frame and ability to run, said Joe Milton "has options" in the new offense. Four different running backs got carries on Saturday, while Milton (15-22, 225 yards, TD) completed at least one pass to nine different players. "He wasn't a real aggressive runner, a good runner, but I just think he's going to get better and better," Meyer said. "He is a giant athlete, and his ball comes out (quickly) from the release point." - Ann Arbor News

Joe Milton accounted for two touchdowns in an unflappable debut at quarterback for No. 18 Michigan, and the Wolverines trampled No. 21 Minnesota with 258 rushing yards in a 49-24 victory Saturday night to open the virus-delayed season. Zach Charbonnet ha d a 70-yard scoring run in the first quarter to set the tone for Michigan's dominance on offense, one of five rushing touchdowns. Donovan Jeter followed by scoring on a 15-yard scoop of an airborne fumble forced by a blitzing Michael Barrett, one of five sacks by the Wolverines. Minnesota's Tanner Morgan passed for 188 yards and a touchdown, with two turnovers. Barrett added a 66-yard kickoff return to set up Milton's scoring pass to Ben Mason that capped a 21-point first quarter to spur the Wolverines to their 13th win in the last 15 conference openers. They have not lost at Minnesota in the battle for the Little Brown Jug trophy since 1977. With the Wolverines leading 28-17 late in the second quarter, Gophers coach P.J. Fleck ordered a fake pun t on fourth-and-4 at their own 31, an obvious sign of how overwhelmed their defense was throughout the game. Tight end Ko Kieft, who gave the Gophers a 7-0 lead with his touchdown catch, took the snap as the upback but was stuffed for a 2-yard loss. Hass an Haskins rushed six times for 82 yards and two touchdowns for the Wolverines, whose only obvious mistakes were on special teams - allowing a blocked punt in the first quarter and three missed field goals by Jake Moody. - Michigan/AP College Football

Michigan defensive tackle Carlo Kemp knew back in 2018 when Joe Milton was a freshman quarterback that there was something different about the 6-foot-5, 243-pounder. And it was more than just Milton's cannon arm on display running the scout team that wow ed him. Fast forward to this abbreviated Big Ten season that will begin Saturday when the Wolverines play at Minnesota, as Milton prepares to take over at quarterback. "(I thought), 'OK, this guy, right here, when it's his time, it'll be his time, and it will be very special,'" Kemp said Monday, referring to Milton. "Now he's grown up into his third year with the same guys he used to lead on the scout team. All of them have developed, gotten better, and he's gotten better himself."Seeing all that come to fruition is incredible. What we have at quarterback this year is a very special leader, a very special guy, and I'm very excited for him." Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh would not name official starters at any positions because of COVID-19 testing and the possibility that players could test positive and would have to sit. But with that in mind, he essentially said Monday that Milton is the starter with Cade McNamara not far behind as the backup. "He's shown a lot of great things," Harbaugh said of Milton. "Joe has been running with the ones. He's made a lot of strides, getting a lot of reps, as well as Cade McNamara, who has closed all gaps, as well. He's playing extremely well. Really good command of the offense, showing a real savviness and als o a lot of talent." - Detroit News

Harbaugh cited daily testing of players as one reason for his reluctance to name a starter for Saturday's game, saying a positive test could derail any player's standing on the team. "Right up until game time," Harbaugh said. "Tough for me to say that de finitely anybody is going to be starting. They have to test on Friday before we leave, to be able to make the trip, and they have to test negative on game day to be able to play." Even so, the 6-foot-5, 243-pound Milton remains the frontrunner for the jo b thanks to his large frame, experience in the system and his uniquely strong arm, something Harbaugh referenced on Monday. The challenge this offseason was to get Milton, of Pahokee, Fla., to dial back some of that strength. Harbaugh says he put i n the "necessary" and "appropriate" work to do that. "He really took to heart to throw passes with touch," Harbaugh said. "I think he made a lot of growth in that way (while) putting the appropriate elevation on the ball. He's really made it a catchable ball." Milton entered the offseason in what was billed as a three-man race for the starting job, with McNamara and redshirt junior Dylan McCaffrey. But McCaffrey has since opted not to play this season while he weighs a transfer, paving the way for Milto n or McNamara to take the job. - Ann Arbor News

There's a lot to like about Milton. After reviewing film, he's sold me on his ability to escape the pocket and pick up yards as needed. His big, bulky frame makes him difficult to tackle, giving Michigan an upgrade in that department. But his arm remains the wildcard here. It's stronger than anything Michigan has seen in a long, long time, perhaps ever. Milton can throw the deep ball, but is going to need to take some zip off his short and intermediate throws to avoid turnovers. I can see why folks are so excited about him. To help the make the jump this season, Milton is going to need protection up front and receivers that can get open. He's also lost his primary deep-ball threat in Nico Collins. - Ann Arbor News

Earlier this month, after the Big Ten reversed course and announced a nine-game football season this fall on Sept. 16, redshirt junior quarterback Dylan McCaffrey made the decision to opt out of the season with plans to transfer. That leaves Milton, a re dshirt sophomore, and McNamara, who redshirted the 2019 season, as the two most experienced players at the position. Milton, who's appeared in eight games as a backup and packs a strong arm, is considered the frontrunner. "We've been watching them every day in practice, and it's going really well," Harbaugh said. "The leadership - we've had plenty of guys step up in leadership capacities, and definitely Joe Milton has done that. "Cade's a year younger, but he's doing that as well." Last week, Michigan o ffensive coordinator Josh Gattis called Milton, a Pahokee, Fla., native, one of the most improved players on the team this offseason. While his leadership has stood out, so has Milton's pocket presence, delivery and ability to read a defense. "Every day out there, he makes some type of 'wow' play," Gattis said. "Those 'wow' plays are not just 'wow' plays in college football, but they'd be 'wow' plays on Sundays." - Ann Arbor News

Michigan offensive coordinator Josh Gattis, preparing for his second season calling plays, can't stop gushing about first-year starting quarterback Joe Milton. Gattis spoke of Milton as a "special talent" Wednesday during a Zoom call with reporters and s aid he has improved in every facet of the game. Whether Milton will have receiver Nico Collins to throw to remains up in the air. But a positive for the Wolverines came last week when right tackle Jalen Mayfield decided to return after opting out followi ng the Big Ten's decision to postpone the season on Aug. 11.
