As Memphis allowed Houston to score on all three of its fourth-quarter drives during its comeback win Friday, the Tigers' defense was without its leader and captain in All-AAC safety Quindell Johnson. Johnson didn't play in the fourth quarter due to an u ndisclosed injury. Coach Ryan Silverfield said he's "day-to-day" for the Tigers' (4-2, 2-1) game at East Carolina (3-3, 1-2) on Saturday (6:30 p.m., ESPNU).Johnson recorded his third interception of the season in the first half but also missed tim e during the third quarter before sitting out for good. He finished with just one tackle, his fewest of the season. Johnson is the Tigers' best defensive player and several NFL scouts, along with representatives from the Reese's Senior Bowl, were watchin g him during pregame warmups against Houston. He leads the team in interceptions and is second in tackles behind linebacker Xavier Cullens. He and Cullens shared the team lead with four takeaways this season. Without Johnson, Memphis gave up 186 yards - including 147 by passing - in the fourth quarter as Houston scored 26 points to rally for a 33-32 win. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Quindell Johnson's goodbye to Memphis seemed well arranged in November. From walking out pregame for senior day festivities to saying "no comment" postgame about future plans. Against Tulane, his hometown team, Johnson had nine tackles and an interceptio n in the Tigers' 33-28 win. But the "no comment" was less being coy and more unsure because Johnson started to waver about being selected in the NFL Draft. "I knew what I had done and what I was capable of doing," Johnson said. "But then, I had those do ubts. If I come back, I knew I could get my draft grade up." The senior safety announced his return on Dec. 30 on Twitter. The decision was partly aided by talking with the NFL Draft advisory board, who wanted to see a better 40-yard time and impro vement in man-to-man coverage. But Johnson, a two-time All-AAC safety, also considered what his parents taught him in New Orleans. Finish what you start. Be loyal where you are. Trust things will always work out. "My Dad told me coming into Memphis that no matter the outcome, just stick it out. You just never know what happens," said Johnson, who had 104 tackles and 11 pass breakups last season. Loyalty was practiced early on in the Johnson household. Quindell and his twin brother Kendell played for the same AAU basketball program from 5 years old until high school. Their father Darell backed up his words by coaching his sons during their 10-plus years in the program. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Quindell Johnson flirted with the NFL Draft but the two-time All-AAC second team selection returns for a final year as possibly the Tigers' best overall player. It's a good sign for a team that was 103rd nationally in passing yards allowed last season an d has been among the nation's bottom 30 teams in that category four of the last five seasons. Johnson's been an intelligent, instinctive playmaker since his freshman year (six career interceptions, 104 tackles last season). He's also durable with no miss ed games in three seasons and will help lead a defense that returns three starters in the secondary. If the Tigers' pass defense improves, Johnson must be at the center of it. A big season won't just help his NFL stock, it could help the defense take sig nificant steps forward under first-year coordinator Matt Barnes. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

The University of Memphis is staying in virtual lockstep with the warp speed evolution of the collegiate athletics landscape in Tennessee. On April 20, Gov. Bill Lee signed an amendment aimed at further loosening NIL restrictions on colleges and universi ties. It clears the way for coaches - and all school employees - to attend NIL events, fundraise for NIL collectives and for NIL representatives to make presentations on campus to recruits and players. In other words, NIL dealings between supporter s, coaches and athletes must no longer be strictly confined to a third-party medium. On Tuesday, the Memphis athletics department announced the launch of its official NIL marketplace, which will be powered by the school's current partner, Opendorse, an NIL readiness company. Touted as a more streamlined avenue for fans, donors, brands and sponsors to browse, book, pitch and pay Tigers athletes for NIL activities, Memphis is one of the first schools in the country to offer a program of this kind. - Memp his Commercial Appeal
