  01/16/23 - RB Zach CharbonnetSr/2023, UCLA, 6-0, 222 (DS#3 RB) + More +

Running back Zach Charbonnet has decided to forgo his remaining eligibility at UCLA and publicly declared for the 2023 NFL Draft on Monday, the final day to eligible players could declare. Charbonnet finished his senior season as a consensus All-American and first in the country for all-purpose yards, averaging 168 yards per game. He ran for 1,359 yards and 14 touchdowns on 398 attempts in 10 games this season.

He also caught 37 passes for 321 yards. The 1,680 all-purpose yards ranks eighth among all-time Bruins for a single-season. The Oaks Christian alumnus had one year of eligibility remaining, due to the extra year granted by the NCAA for players on a roster during the 2020 pandemic season. Charbonnet had 2,496 rushing yards and 27 touchdowns in 22 career games for UCLA. He did not play in the Bruins' 37-35 loss to Pitt in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 30. - The Press-Enterprise

  10/30/22 - RB Zach CharbonnetSr/2023, UCLA, 6-0, 222 (DS#3 RB) + More +

Zach Charbonnet scored three touchdowns and rushed for 198 yards, his fifth straight 100-yard game, as No. 12 UCLA bounced back with a 38-13 victory over Stanford on Saturday night. It was the sixth 100-yard game of the season for Charbonnet, who also had 61 yards receiving on five catches. The junior leads the nation in all-purpose yards per game at 170.9 and the Pac-12 with 964 yards rushing. The Bruins ran for 324 yards and averaged 7.2 yards per carry as they improved to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in Pac-12 play. It is UCLA's best start since 2005, when it won its first eight games. UCLA's Dorian Thompson-Robinson had 249 scrimmage yards, including 199 passing, and rushed for a touchdown.

Stanford (3-5, 1-5) had a two-game winning streak snapped but scored its first touchdown in 11 quarters when Tanner McKee connected with Benjamin Yurosek on fourth-and-goal from the UCLA 2-yard line. It was the Cardinal's first touchdown in 170 minutes, 54 seconds. McKee completed 13 of 29 passes for 115 yards, one week after throwing for 320 yards. Stanford scored on its opening possession on Joshua Karty's 22-yard field goal before UCLA took the lead with two touchdowns in 20 seconds. Thompson-Robinson capped a 12-play, 75-yard drive with a 3-yard run off right guard to give the Bruins a 7-3 lead with 6:05 remaining in the first quarter. The Cardinal turned it over on the first play of their ensuing drive when Darius Muasau picked off McKee. Charbonnet then went 23 yards up the middle on the next play to put UCLA up by double digits. The Bruins scored on their first four drives. Charbonnet scored from 1 yard out in the second quarter to make it 24-3 at halftime and added a 37-yard TD late in the third quarter. - UCLA/AP College Football

  09/24/22 - RB Zach CharbonnetSr/2023, UCLA, 6-0, 222 (DS#3 RB) + More +

Zach Charbonnet ran for three touchdowns and Dorian Thompson-Robinson threw for two more to power UCLA to its seventh straight win, a 45-17 rout of winless Colorado on Saturday. The Bruins (4-0, 1-0 Pac-12) left Boulder with their first victory at Folsom Field since 2014 and their longest winning streak since winning their first eight games in 2005. Freshman left-hander Owen McCown, the son of longtime NFL quarterback Josh McCown, made his starting debut for Colorado (0-4, 0-1), which has now been outscored 173-47, the first time in program history the Buffaloes have lost four consecutive games by at least 25 points.

McCown got his chance after last year's starter, Brendon Lewis and Tennessee transfer J.T. Shrout failed to ignite Colorado's stagnant offense. McCown scored on a 2-yard keeper and capped an 85-yard, 14-play drive with an 8-yard scoring strike to fellow freshman Jordan Tyson but he had two turnovers and couldn't keep the Buffaloes from dropping to 0-4 for the first time since 2006. McCown finished 26 of 42 for 258 yards with a TD and an interception. He was sacked five times. UCLA outrushed Colorado 249 yards to 51 and the Bruins dominated the Pac-12 opener for both teams with touchdown drives on its first three possessions to build a 21-3 lead that was never threatened. - UCLA/AP College Football

Zach Charbonnet has worked to become UCLA's featured running back quickly and with a signature quiet demeanor. This fall camp, the Bruins are searching for his counterpart. "You can't put it all on Zach," running backs coach Deshaun Foster said Friday morning. "It's a two-back system, you've just got to be able to stay healthy and you don't know what's gonna happen, so I want to get everybody as much as I can." Four possibilities for the second running back spot include Keegan Jones, TJ Harden, Deshun Murrell and Kazmeir Allen, according to Foster. Harden is a freshman and Murrell is a redshirt freshman while Jones and Allen have comparable game experience. Last season, Jones averaged 7.33 yards per game in nine contests and Allen averaged 7.75 yards per game in 12 games.

Head coach Chip Kelly said he has "a lot of confidence" in Jones, and Foster spoke highly of him as well. "He's a very fast kid. Talented," Foster said. "From the south, so he has a little different work ethic than other guys. He knows that his role is going to increase, he's gonna get the opportunity. He's just really trying to make sure he makes it to that." Charbonnet, an Oaks Christian graduate who played two years at Michigan before transferring to UCLA, is working on becoming a more vocal leader. He said Friday that talking in meetings and giving presentations has helped him with that. He also, at the encouragement of quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, helped coach a youth football camp for Native American kids over the summer. "I just had to take on a leadership role, especially this year," Charbonnet said. "Coming up for the offense and trying to lead those running backs, so that was my main point coming in this offseason was working on my leadership skills and on my vocal skills, too." - Orange County Register

2022 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD CANDIDATE: Zach Charbonnet (Sr.), UCLA,...An intensely recruited prep sensation from Camarillo, Ca., Charbonnet's accomplishments at Oaks Christian School in Westlake Village were epic - 4,741 yards rushing, including 2,094 and 23 touchdowns as a junior. He first selected Michigan, but underwent knee surgery in January 2019, but started in the season opener. In January 2021 he entered the transfer portal and moved closer to home, joining UCLA. During the 2021 season, Charbonnet and Brittain Brown shared rushing duties in a two-back system. With Brown out injured against USC, Charbonnet had season highs of 28 carries and 167 yards, while surpassing the 1,000-yard milestone for the season. Pac-12 coaches voted Charbonnet second-team all-conference,] and the Associated Press named him the conference's newcomer of the year. He finished with 1,137 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns, second in the conference in rushing yards per game with 94.8, behind B. J. Baylor of Oregon State. On Jan. 14 he announced he would forego the draft and return to UCLA for his senior season. - Draft Scout news sources

NFL teams typically value younger running backs over more experienced options given worries over wear and tear. Even so, UCLA running back Zach Charbonnet could follow in the mold of Najee Harris, who put quality junior and senior seasons at Alabama together to vault into the 2021 NFL Draft's first round. Charbonnet is built like a tank at 6-foot-1, 220 pounds, but his size does not limit his speed and agility. He is just as comfortable running around tackles as he is through, and has handled his collegiate workload thus far without major injury. That versatility and durability should make him an enticing prospect. - USCFootball.com

The Bruins took a major step forward in Year 4 under Chip Kelly with 8 wins, the most since 2015. The offense was one of the best in the Pac-12 last season, led by dual-threat quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who combined for over 3,000 yards of offense and 30 total touchdowns. UCLA also returns talented tailback Zach Charbonnet, who was second in the league in rushing with 1,137 yards and 13 touchdowns. The defense, which was much-maligned over Kelly's four seasons, should show growth with plenty of experienced players. That's good news for a team that hosts two of its most formidable challengers in Utah (Oct. 8) and USC (Nov. 19) this year. - Orlando Sentinel

The Rose Bowl was chilly, and the crowd was fairly sparse. The UCLA Bruins still celebrated their regular season-ending victory over California to honor the seniors who persevered through their difficult four-year transformation into a winner. Chip Kelly warned the Bruins not to celebrate this 42-14 rout of California too much, however. Dorian Thompson-Robinson threw three touchdown passes, Zach Charbonnet rushed for 106 yards and another score, and UCLA wrapped up its first eight-win regular season since 2015 on Saturday night with 32 unanswered points against the Golden Bears.

Kyle Philips caught two touchdown passes, Greg Dulcich caught another and Kazmeir Allen rushed for a score in the home finale for the Bruins (8-4, 6-3 Pac-12), who completed their first unbeaten November since 1998. UCLA also wrapped up a share of second place in the Pac-12 South for the first time since 2014. "We just had a lot of momentum in the month of November," UCLA safety Quentin Lake said. "Tonight we held an offense who had over 600 yards last time out. We were just locked in on the ball on every play. We're happy, and let's keep this ball rolling." Chase Garbers and Christopher Brooks rushed for touchdowns for the Golden Bears (4-7, 3-5), who have seven losses for the fifth time in the mostly dismal decade since Cal fired Jeff Tedford, the winningest coach in school history. Cal officially will miss a bowl game for the eighth time in 12 years. - UCLA/AP College Football

Zach Charbonnet had three rushing touchdowns for the second time this season, Dorian Thompson-Robinson racked up 356 yards of total offense and UCLA became bowl eligible for the first time in four years with a 44-20 victory over Colorado on Saturday night. Charbonnet had all of his scores in the second half as the Bruins rallied from a 20-7 second-quarter deficit with 37 straight points. UCLA (6-4, 4-3) is the fifth team from the Pac-12 to become bowl eligible. It is also the first time they will play in a bowl in Chip Kelly's four-year tenure. "Like I said at the beginning of the week, we still have stuff to play for and obviously the bowl game was one of them. So now we can check that off the list, but the work's not done," said Thompson-Robinson, whose 23-yard keeper midway through the third quarter put the Bruins on top for good at 23-20.

Nicholas Barr-Mira's 40-yard field goal on the last play of the first half got UCLA within 10 at halftime before it scored touchdowns on four straight drives and added another on Kyle Philips' 82-yard punt return to make it 44-20 in the fourth quarter. "We felt confident when we were in at halftime. There weren't a lot of adjustments," Kelly said. "We just had to play our game and I think all three phases really played their game in the second half." It is the second time this season Charbonnet has had three touchdowns. The junior, who finished with 67 yards on 17 carries, scored from 2 yards out on the opening drive of the third quarter to get the Bruins within 20-16. After Thompson-Robinson's score, Charbonnet ended the next two drives with TDs. - UCLA/AP College Football

Running backs Zach Charbonnet and Brittain Brown took center stage in UCLA's season-opening matinee Saturday, helping the Bruins produce a dominant 44-10 victory over Hawai'i. It was the Bruins' first nonconference victory in four seasons under coach Chip Kelly. UCLA was 0-6 in nonconference play, including a pair of losses to both Cincinnati and Oklahoma. Charbonnet rushed for 106 yards and three touchdowns on six carries in the first half of his first game as a Bruin. He carved his way through the Hawai'i defense, scoring on runs of 21 and 47 yards in the first quarter. "It was a great experience, Charbonnet said. "I've just got to give it all to my offensive line. I'm just thankful that they let me come in with open arms, and I'm just one of their brothers now."

Charbonnet's three touchdown effort has quickly placed him with elite company. He became the first Bruin since Joshua Kelley (2019) to rush for three touchdowns in a single game and the first to rush for three in the season opener since Johnathan Franklin in 2012. "He's relentless when he has the football," Kelly said of Charbonnet. "He is always running with great forward lean and it makes him very difficult to tackle. Kelly has had Charbonnet on his radar since watching him play at Oaks Christian. "He's 220 pounds. He has legit speed," Kelly said. "He's the same guy that we saw. We were just really happy when we were fortunate to get him last spring." - Orange County Register

UCLA dominated in every facet against Hawaii. Running backs Zach Charbonnet and Brittain Brown combined for 184 yards and four touchdowns, an attacking defense held the Rainbow Warriors without a touchdown until late in the third quarter, and the Bruins' special teams blocked a punt for a touchdown. Charbonnet, a Michigan transfer who had starred at Oaks Christian High in Westlake Village before spending his first two college seasons with the Wolverines, enjoyed a grand UCLA debut. His third carry went for a touchdown. So did his fourth. And his sixth. Charbonnet had run for 106 yards by then as UCLA built a 31-3 lead early in the second quarter. He would not get another carry; there was no need.

Embattled UCLA coach Chip Kelly got an endorsement from analysts Kirk Herbstreit and Matt Leinart, who suggested the Bruins are going to surprise in 2021. Charbonnet's first touchdown came after he burst untouched through a huge hole up the middle for 21 yards, his most difficult challenge eluding an official in the way. His second touchdown came on a 47-yard run in which he broke five tackles, including two from the same defender. His third touchdown came after he juked a few defenders on another 21-yard run. "He's relentless when he has the football and he's always running with a great forward lean," Kelly said of the junior who averaged 17.7 yards per carry. "It makes him very difficult to tackle. He's 220 pounds but he's got legit speed." - Los Angeles Times

The mother of UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson echoed the thoughts of many Bruins fans during the first half of Saturday's game against Hawaii after Zach Charbonnet scored his third touchdown. Melva Thompson-Robinson tweeted "Thanks @UMichFootball" as Charbonnet rushed 106 yards in his UCLA debut and the Bruins rolled to a 44-10 season-opening victory at the Rose Bowl. Charbonnet - who was at Michigan the past two seasons before transferring - also became the first Bruins back since Johnathan Franklin in 2012 to run for three TDs in a season-opener. "My line put me in great situations when I did have an opportunity," Charbonnet said. "It allowed us to be one-on-one defenders, and that's all as a running back you can ask for." UCLA scored on its first five possessions and roared out to a 31-3 halftime lead as it snapped an eight-game losing streak to nonconference teams dating back to 2017.

It is also the first time that Chip Kelly has won an opener in four seasons as UCLA's coach. "We're just excited as a team. I thought our kids played with great energy," Kelly said. "There is an idea with what you think you can do in all three phases of the game (coming into the season), but until you actually play another opponent, you're not sure." Charbonnet scored UCLA's first touchdown midway through the first quarter on a 21-yard run after great blocks from the right side of the offensive line to extend the lead to 10-0. The junior's best run of the day came with 47 seconds remaining in the first quarter when he broke four Hawaii tackles before turning on the speed for a 46-yard touchdown to make it 24-3. He then went over 100 yards on his sixth carry with a 21-yard score on the next possession. - UCLA/AP College Football

Charbonnet, like the rest of the Bruins, arrived in Westwood with something to prove. He set the freshman touchdown record for Michigan in 2019. After getting fewer touches his sophomore year, he is looking to make an immediate impact for the Bruins. "No matter where I am, I'm always going to have that chip on my shoulder and work hard and try to outwork everyone," Charbonnet said. "I'm confident with the new additions that we've added...I think we're definitely gonna go out there and shock the PAC-12 this year." While Kelly said he needed to watch tape before assessing the team's progress as spring workouts came to a close Thursday, Charbonnet's contributions were memorable. "Zach is a guy that obviously, he moves really well for a big kid. You almost forget how big he is and what he can do in small spaces. He's a guy for us who can do a lot of things," Kelly said of the 6-foot-1, 220-pound tailback. "He's really smart. He's a really good student. He's a real student of the game. He's been a lot of fun to coach...I love coaching him on the field. He's been a real bright for us this spring." - Los Angeles Times

Zach Charbonnet is indeed transferring away from Michigan, and closer to home. The running back, who put his name into the NCAA's transfer portal last week, announced his commitment to the University of California, Los Angeles, on Saturday. Charbonnet entered the portal on Jan. 18 after two seasons at Michigan, a stretch in which the Camarillo, Calif., native appeared rushed for 850 yards and 12 touchdowns in 18 games. He led the Wolverines in rushing in 2019, his true-freshman season, with 726 yards and 11 touchdowns. - Ann Arbor News

One of Michigan's most productive running backs the last two seasons is exploring a transfer. Zach Charbonnet, a former four-star recruit who amassed 850 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns in two seasons, has entered his name into the NCAA's transfer portal, a Michigan spokesman confirmed on Monday. Just because Charbonnet entered the portal doesn't necessarily mean he will transfer, but the move allows coaches from other schools to recruit the 6-foot-1, 220-pound back. Charbonnet has been part of a crowded backfield since arriving in Ann Arbor, sharing carries each of the last two seasons. As a true freshman in 2019, Charbonnet rushed for a team-high 726 yards and 11 touchdowns despite lingering injury, but nearly split reps with redshirt freshman Hassan Haskins. - Ann Arbor News

This might explain why Michigan's running game struggled through much of the 2019 season. The unit, full of inexperience and youth to begin with, was a banged up bunch most of the fall. While it might not come as much of a surprise, Wolverines offensive coordinator Josh Gattis confirmed the news Thursday during a conference call with reports, citing freshmen Zach Charbonnet and Hassan Haskins specifically. "Everyone knows Zach's tough," Gattis said. "He battled through some injuries in high school, (and) he came in a little banged up and needed to get cleaned up. Then he battled through a number of different injuries last year."

Charbonnet, a four-star prospect in Michigan's 2019 recruiting class, and Haskins, who redshirted in 2018 and was moved to running back prior to last season, spent most of last spring sidelined due to injury. That was known. But both players started the season less than 100 percent, evident in their workload early on. Charbonnet, who led Michigan with 726 yards and 11 touchdowns rushing, combined for 41 carries during the first two games of the season - including 33 carries for 100 yards and three touchdowns against Army. Over the next two games, Charbonnet's carries took a drastic decline - two in a blowout loss to Wisconsin and five in a win over Rutgers. "To see a guy that was a true freshman kind of battle through adversity and injuries and still play the full season says a lot," Gattis said. "But he's been able to spend his offseason focusing on his body." - Ann Arbor News

Giles Jackson returned the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown to get things started for No. 14 Michigan, which used two first-half scoring runs by freshman Zach Charbonnet to pull away from Maryland in a 38-7 victory on Saturday. Seeking to build on a 45-14 rout of Notre Dame one week earlier, the Wolverines (7-2, 4-2 Big Ten) went up 21-0 at halftime and coasted to the finish against the fading Terrapins (3-6, 1-5). Jackson's game-opening dash down the right sideline set the tone. Charbonnet ended Michigan's first drive with a 2-yard run, and the defense made those two scores stand up.

The Wolverines' special teams contributed, too. In addition to the kickoff return, Michigan used a successful fake punt to set up Charbonnet's second TD, and a partially blocked punt led to a third-quarter touchdown run by Hassan Haskins for a 35-0 lead. Wearing throwback uniforms from a far brighter era of Maryland football, the Terrapins absorbed an old-fashioned beatdown on homecoming. Maryland has lost six of seven under first-year coach Michael Locksley. Javon Leake's 97-yard kickoff return late in the third quarter was one of very few highlights for the Terrapins. Charbonnet has scored four touchdowns in the last two games. His 11 TDs are a Michigan single-season record for a freshman. - Michigan/AP College Football

Zach Charbonnet ran for two touchdowns in the first half and Shea Patterson threw for two scores in the second, helping No. 19 Michigan rout No. 8 Notre Dame 45-14 in driving rain Saturday night. The Wolverines (6-2) ended an eight-game losing streak against top-10 teams under coach Jim Harbaugh, who needed a signature win in his fifth season that likely won't end with the Big Ten title he and college football's winningest program desperately covet. The Fighting Irish (5-2) were knocked out of the College Football Playoff picture on the rain-filled night that seemed to affect them much more than Michigan.

Notre Dame took advantage of a questionable call on pass interference to set up Ian Book's 7-yard TD pass to Cole Kmet to pull within 10 points late in the third quarter. Michigan responded with Patterson's 8-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Peoples-Jones on the ensuing drive, which got off to a good start with Hassan Haskins' 49-yard run. The former linebacker finished with career-high 149 yards on 20 carries. Charbonnet had 74 yards rushing on 15 carries, giving Michigan a tandem of running backs to control the game behind an offensive line that created huge holes. Patterson threw his second TD early in the fourth, connecting on a 16-yard pass to Nico Collins, to put Michigan ahead 31-7. On a windy and wet night, it was difficult to throw the ball and Michigan's defense made it tough for the Irish to run. - Michigan/AP College Football

Zach Charbonnet ran for a 2-yard touchdown to give No. 19 Michigan an early double-digit lead and its defense did the rest against No. 14 Iowa, forcing four turnovers and tallying eight sacks in a 10-3 win Saturday. The Wolverines (4-1, 2-1 Big Ten) were held scoreless over the final three quarters because they could not run or pass effectively, scoring just three points off the Hawkeyes' turnovers. Iowa (4-1, 1-1) failed to take advantage of favorable field position on its final two drives with a chance to extend the game or possibly win it with a touchdown and 2-point conversion. The Hawkeyes turned the ball over on downs at the Michigan 44 with 37 seconds left after a penalty- and sack-filled drive forced them to punt with a fourth-and-36 at midfield on the previous possession.

Iowa running back Mekhi Sargent fumbled on his team's first snap, giving up the ball at the Hawkeyes 18. Michigan, though, had to settle for a field goal after gaining just 6 yards. The Wolverines took a 10-0 lead on their next drive, which started with a 51-yard pass to Nico Collins and finished with Charbonnet's 2-yard run. Iowa avoided a shutout with Keith Duncan's 22-yard field goal early in the second quarter. Michigan's Shea Patterson was 14 of 26 for 147 yards with an interception. Iowa's Nate Stanley was 23 of 42 for 260 yards with three interceptions, ending a 139-pass streak without getting picked off. - Michigan/AP College Football
