Aidan Hutchinson stepped to the mic for his press conference here at the NFL Scouting Combine, then immediately faced a barrage of questions about his arm length right off the top. He didn't seem to like it very much. "Um, yeah, there might be questions along that," the star Michigan pass rusher said. "I guess we'll see. But I'm not too worried about it. I'm very confident in my ability despite how long I am or whatever you say. So it doesn't really matter to me." It might not matter to Hutchinson, who just set the Michigan single-season sack record, although it might to NFL teams. The reigning Heisman Trophy finalist weighed in at 6-foot-7 and 260 pounds on Saturday, but with a wingspan of just 32 1/8 inches.

That was second-shortest among all the edge rushers at the combine, ahead of only Texas A&M's Tyree Johnson (30 7/8), and would make him the shortest-armed pass rusher in Detroit. Romeo Okwara measured in at 34 1/8 inches at his combine, while Trey Flowers was 34 2/8, Julian Okwara was 34 3/8 and Austin Bryant was 34 5/8. The Lions hold the No. 2 overall pick in this year's draft, and while a quarterback (like Malik Willis) or safety (like Kyle Hamilton) could enter the picture, the club seems far more likely to use the pick to juice its long-suffering pass rush. - Ann Arbor News

Aidan Hutchinson of Michigan won the Lott IMPACT Trophy as the college defensive player having the biggest influence on his team Sunday night. The senior defensive end earned the honor a night after finishing runner-up for the Heisman Trophy. Hall of Fame safety Ronnie Lott presented Hutchinson with the award at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach. It goes to a player with strong academic work, community involvement and team leadership. Hutchinson set a Michigan season record with 14 sacks in leading the Wolverines to a 12-1 record and the Big Ten title.

He's the second Wolverines player to win the Lott Trophy, joining Jabrill Peppers in 2016. Michigan will receive $25,000 for its general scholarship fund. Hutchinson beat out Devin Lloyd of Utah and Georgia teammates Nakobe Dean and Jordan Davis. Each of those schools will receive $5,000 for their scholarship fund. Hutchinson and the second-ranked Wolverines will play No. 3 Georgia in the College Football Playoff semifinals on Dec. 31 in Miami. A national panel of more than 300 former college coaches, players and media members voted on the award. - AP College Football

2021 LOMBARDI AWARD WINNER: Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson of the No. 2-ranked University of Michigan football team was named the recipient of the 2021 Rotary Lombardi Trophy on Wednesday (Dec. 8). The honor is bestowed upon the best lineman (offensive or defensive) in college football by the Rotary Club of Houston. Hutchinson, a senior from Plymouth, Mich., was U-M's ninth finalist for the honor since it was first awarded in 1979. He also joins LaMarr Woodley (2006) as the winning Wolverines in the history of the award.

Hutchinson is a two-time defensive captain and the tone-setter for the Michigan defense, which lists top-15 in four major categories, including scoring defense (fourth). He has been named the Woodson-Nagurski Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year as well as the Smith-Brown Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the year during his stellar 2021 season. Hutchinson has totaled 58 stops (33 solo). He set a new program sack record with 14.0 and counting through 13 games, a figure that ranks third nationally. - Michigan Football

Michigan moved up to No. 2 Tuesday night in the second-to-last College Football Playoff rankings, joining Georgia, Alabama and Cincinnati in the top four heading into conference championship weekend. Oklahoma State is fifth going into the Big 12 championship game Saturday against No. 9 Baylor, and Notre Dame is sixth with no games left and no head coach. Brian Kelly left the Fighting Irish and was introduced as the new coach at LSU on Tuesday, three days after independent Notre Dame finished its season 11-1. Selection committee chairman Gary Barta, who is Iowa's athletic director, noted selection protocol requires the committee to consider the unavailability of players and coaches and how that could affect a team's performance in the postseason. Losing Kelly had no impact on this week's ranking for Notre Dame because the committee does not project ahead into the postseason until all games are finished. - AP College Football

If Jim Harbaugh and his Michigan football team need any more motivation, they could confide in the preseason polls. The Wolverines were absent from the preseason AP Top-25 poll released on Monday, marking the first time the team will begin a football season unranked since Harbaugh's first in Ann Arbor. Michigan is coming off a 2-4 season that prompted Harbaugh to overhaul his coaching staff. It was that year, 2015, saw Harbaugh's grand arrival - leading Michigan to a 10-3 season, Citrus Bowl victory over Florida and No. 12 final ranking. The Wolverines were ranked in the AP's preseason poll in each subsequent year since.

This year, however, the task might be a bit more dubious. Michigan is set to break in a new defense under first-year coordinator Mike Macdonald (although, he does get a few talented pieces back) and expected to roll with a quarterback who has just one collegiate start under his belt. As a result, the media picked Michigan to finish fourth in the Big Ten's East Division this fall. Harbaugh's team did garner 12 votes, suggesting that there is still some support nationally. But five other Big Ten teams appeared in the preseason rankings, a group led by Ohio State at No. 4 and West frontrunner Wisconsin at No. 12. - Ann Arbor News

Preseason watch lists have started rolling in - and Aidan Hutchinson has cracked his first of the summer. The Michigan defensive end was one of 90 FBS players on the Bednarik Award watch list, unveiled Monday morning and awarded annually to the nation's best defensive player. Hutchinson, a senior, is a preseason first-team all-Big Ten selection by Athon and Lindy's, and second-team choice by Phil Steele. The Plymouth, Mich., native is expected to anchor the Wolverines' defensive line in 2021 after he was sidelined early last fall following a tear of his ACL. In 2019, as a sophomore, Hutchinson earned third-team all-Big Ten honors by the coaches for his disruptive play on the field. That year, he racked up 68 tackles (10 1/2 for a loss), had 4 1/2 sacks, six pass breakups, recorded four quarterback hurries and forced two fumbles. - Ann Arbor News

He may not have been 100 percent during the spring, still recovering from offseason surgery to repair his broken ankle, but Aidan Hutchinson's work ethic was apparent to those who spent considerable time around him. Consider Jim Harbaugh one of them. The Michigan head coach called the star defensive end's decision to return for the 2021 season "just unbelievable." "Not just his decision to come back - but the decision to come back all-in," Harbaugh raved recently on the "In the Trenches" podcast.

Back in March, Hutchinson told reporters he was a regular at Michigan's spring practices - doing what he could during individual periods and taking in the new defensive scheme being installed by first-year coordinator Mike Macdonald, all while trying to get back into tip-top shape. And according to Harbaugh, the 6-foot-6, 269-pound Plymouth, Mich., native has. "Right now, physically, 1 or 2 top-rated guy on the team," Harbaugh told host Jon Jansen. "1, 2 or 3 - in that top tier - top-3 across all key performance indicators. He has come back training at the highest level." Harbaugh reiterated that Hutchinson, a former all-Big Ten honoree, was "all in," adding: "(He) wants to be great. Wants to be great for Michigan." - Ann Arbor News

The Plymouth, Mich., native could be one of Michigan's highest-graded prospects by the time the 2022 draft comes around. A lot will have to do with his size and the position he plays - Hutchinson is listed at 6-foot-6 and 269 pounds, slightly bigger than Kwity Paye (if accurate), and lines up on the edge. While Hutchinson was limited in 2020, he was disruptive as a sophomore in 2019 - registering 68 tackles (10 for a loss), 4 1/2 sacks, six pass deflections and two forced fumbles. If there wasn't a shortened season in 2020, and Hutchinson had suffered a season-ending ankle surgery, it's likely he would have left for the NFL draft this year. - Ann Arbor News

Motivated to return this fall by an injury-plagued 2020 season that was cut short due to a pandemic, Aidan Hutchinson spoke of the need to "reset the culture" at Michigan. The Wolverines' star defensive end could have turned pro. He could have opted out of the season last fall and declared for the NFL draft right then and there. Truth be told, he never really considered it. He wanted to come back and lay the ground work for a program he grew up watching and idolizing. But how good will the Wolverines be? First-year coordinator Mike Macdonald has brought in a new scheme and new way of doing things, setting the stage for drastic changes to the Wolverines' defense in 2021.

How drastic remains to be seen. Players and coaches haven't said much, but they have revealed this: The looks are going to be much more diverse and multiple than before, and be influenced by the NFL's Baltimore Ravens, the team in which Macdonald last coached on. Where does that leave Hutchinson, a 6-foot-6, 269-pound defensive end? He'll still be an end in the traditional sense, but afforded more opportunities to play with his hand off the ground and rush the quarterback. "I'm fired up," Hutchinson told reporters in March. "We got a young staff and I really love all the coaches that coach Harbaugh brought in. There's kind of a different energy around Schembechler (Hall) these days. Everyone's excited." - Ann Arbor News

Striking an upbeat, positive cord, Aidan Hutchinson said Tuesday he hopes to be fully recovered soon from the ankle fracture that sidelined him during Michigan's 2020 football season. The stalwart at defensive end told reporters that he's back running and able to condition, with the goal of returning to practice by the end of the Wolverines' spring schedule that began over a week ago. "I'm a little over three months now from surgery," Hutchinson, a former all-Big Ten honoree, said. "It's going really good. I'm recovering really fast. "I've been doing everything but the competitive periods. But I should (be back) towards the end of spring ball - I'm going to hop in some of those just to get back into it."

Hutchinson suffered a fracture in his right ankle last November that derailed what was expected to be his final season at Michigan. The 6-foot-6, 269-pound Plymouth, Mich., native had already posted an impressive sophomore season - racking up 68 tackles (10 for a loss), 4 1/2 sacks, six pass deflections and two forced fumbles in 2019 - and an equally productive junior year could have boosted his NFL draft stock. - Ann Arbor News

Michigan got a bit of good news on the defensive side of the ball this week, with defensive end Aidan Hutchinson announcing plans to return in 2021. In a social media post Monday evening, Hutchinson wrote on Twitter that he's "not quite done yet" and will not declare for the NFL draft, like some analysts projected he would earlier this year. Hutchinson wasn't originally on the four-year plan. He came in and played in all 13 games as a true freshman in 2018, then moved into a starting role as a sophomore in 2019, earning third-team all-Big Ten honors from the coaches while racking up 68 tackles (10 for a loss) and 4 1/2 sacks. Leveraging his athletic frame, Hutchinson added six pass deflections and two forced fumbles. - Michigan Live

Coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday that Michigan's standout defensive end suffered a fracture in his right leg against Indiana and will require surgery, putting him out of action for the foreseeable future. Hutchinson has been one of the Wolverines' most productive defensive players the past two seasons and won't easily be replaced. Redshirt sophomore Taylor Upshaw and redshirt junior Luiji Vilain saw an increased role after Hutchinson departed early in Saturday's game. Fellow starting end Kwity Paye also limped off the field in the second half Saturday and did not return, so Michigan could be without both starters against Wisconsin. - Ann Arbor News

Where did Michigan's pass-rush go that was so effective against Minnesota? The Wolverines had no sacks and just two quarterback hurries - both from Kwity Paye. For a position group that is supposed to be the identity of the defense, it needs to be better. While MSU only rushed for 3.3 yards per carry, Michigan only had two tackles for loss, which both came from linebackers. - Ann Arbor News

If Saturday's opener is any indication, opponents are going to be placing extra attention on Aidan Hutchinson this season. The Michigan defensive end, whose lean frame and extraordinary athletic ability make him difficult to match up with, drew extra blockers throughout the Wolverines' 49-24 win over Minnesota. Hutchinson chuckled Monday when compared to former Michigan first-round pick Rashan Gary, who received similar treatment in 2018. "Yeah, yeah, it certainly felt like it was holding - holding every play from their offensive line," Hutchinson said. "I definitely felt the double teams on Saturday too." Hutchinson was often the Michigan defensive lineman doubled up on when the Wolverines went to a three-man front.

Early in the second quarter, on second-and-15 from Michigan's 37-yard line, Minnesota closed Hutchinson off to buy Morgan enough time to hit receiver Rashod Bateman over the middle for a first down. Later in the quarter, on a second-and-5 play with the Gophers on their own 30, Hutchinson was met with two blockers to allow running Mohamed Ibrahim to break around the corner. Ibrahim was stopped by linebacker Cam McGrone for a 1-yard gain. "Minnesota had a tough scheme," Hutchinson said "They ran a lot of 12 personnel (one running back, two tight ends); a lot of heavy sets. They ran the ball a lot, so it was hard to get that pressure on those early downs just because they had their big tight ends, big personnels." - Ann Arbor News

Hutchinson's already garnering attention from NFL scouts, too. Over the summer, his name popped up on prospect boards for the 2021 draft, leaving Hutchinson the option to leave college if the big Ten had followed through with its plan to postpone the fall season. But now that football is back, so is Hutchinson and his shovel-and-pail work ethic that's drawn notice from others. Asked last month about Michigan's defensive line, linebacker Josh Ross said Hutchinson "was the first guy that comes to my mind." "That dude is an animal," Ross said. "Brings it every single day. Just a guy you want to be around. A leader on our team. (He's) going to have a tremendous season this year." - Ann Arbor News

He was vocal about his desire to play this fall, and backed up his words in early September by joining teammates, players and his head coach for a march in Ann Arbor. Now that the Big Ten has returned and Michigan set to resume play Oct. 24 at Minnesota, starting defensive end Aidan Hutchinson left little doubt about his plans. He's in - and working overtime to be better than last year. "I've been watching a lot of NFL film lately," Hutchinson said last week on the "In the Trenches" podcast. "I think it's just super helpful - more than you'll ever know." Hutchinson, listed at 6-foot-6 and 269 pounds, displays extraordinary athleticism for a player his size. He looks like a tackle but plays like an end, evident by his 68-tackle (10 for a loss), 4 1/2-sack season in 2019, his sophomore season.

It was enough to earn third-team all-Big Ten honors from the coaches, raising expectations for Hutchinson this fall. He joins fellow starter Kwity Paye, another end, and fifth-year senior Carlo Kemp as the three returning starters along Michigan's defensive line, and hopes the group can become a "matchup nightmare" for opponents. "When they bring that tight-end over, that just means a lot of guys are getting single-blocked," Hutchinson said. "So, when they bring that tight end over to me and I get double-teamed, that means Kwity probably gets single-blocked. "It's going to be scary when we get out there." - Ann Arbor News

The Wolverines must replace five starters from a defense that finished 1th nationally, allowing an average 307.2 yards. Michigan ranked 25th in scoring (20.7), 22nd against the run (121.7) and 10th in pass defense (185.5). "I feel like there's going to be a few changes in terms of how we run things and stuff like that," Uche said during NFL Scouting Combine interviews in Indianapolis. "You got Kwity Paye and you got Aidan Hutchinson. You know, they call themselves Salt and Pepper. They're in great hands. You got Cam McGrone (at linebacker), you got Brad Hawkins there at safety, you've got Ambry Thomas there at corner. You guys got a lot of guys coming back, Vince Gray. The defense is in great hands."

Hutchinson, who will be a junior this fall, is the top returning tackler with 68 last season and had 10 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. Paye, who will be a senior, led the team in tackles for loss last season with 12.5 and had 6.5 sacks. "They just matured a lot, especially Aidan," Uche said. "For someone being as young as he is, he's mature. He doesn't act his age. He acts a lot older, like he's been there before. He still has some growing to do, and he's just one hell of a player, man. I think he's going to be a first-round pick when it's all said and done. He's one hell of a player." - Detroit News
