Terry Wilson passed for 385 yards and his third touchdown pass of the game - a 58-yarder to Mannie Logan-Greene - powered New Mexico to a 34-23 victory over in-state rival New Mexico State on Saturday night. The hookup was the only touchdown of the secon d half as the defense for each team held tight in red-zone situations. Leading 24-20 in the third quarter, the Lobos (2-0) twice drove inside the 10 and came away with only a field goal and a seven-point lead.New Mexico State (0-2) then drove to i nside the Lobos 20 but had to settle for a field goal of their own and a 27-23 deficit. Wilson's throw to Logan-Greene early in the fourth quarter gave the Lobos a two-score lead they would not relinquish. In addition to Wilson's 385 yards through the ai r, the Lobos rushed for 178 yards for a total of 563. Bobby Cole had 107 yards rushing and one touchdown. The Lobos were penalized 12 times for 111 yards. The Aggies managed 263 yards. Dino Maldonado threw for 203 yards and two touchdowns. - New Mexico/A P College Football

Quarterback Terry Wilson, a senior transfer from Kentucky, won the University of New Mexico starting job that most everyone thought he would, UNM coach Danny Gonzales told his team on Tuesday before the Lobos' afternoon practice. The Lobos begin their 20 21 season Sept. 2 at home vs. Houston Baptist. Not long after Wilson entered the transfer portal after going 17-8 at Kentucky, the Lobos set their focus on the quarterback because Gonzales and his staff sought a signal caller with experience after New Me xico's 2-5 2020 season. UNM offensive coordinator Derek Warehime helped with making a connection with Wilson, who played for Warehime's father, Nick, at Del City High School in Oklahoma.Gonzales also wanted a winner. Wilson, in 2018 as a redshirt sophomore, led the Wildcats to their first 10-win season since 1977. That season featured a 27-16 Wildcats win at Florida for the first time since 1986, and ended with a 27-24 win over Penn State in the Citrus Bowl. "His experience from being a 25-game s tarter in Division I football really had a big hand on that (decision)," Gonzales told the media after practice. "I think he has a really good presence in the huddle. The guys seem to follow and we seem to click a little bit. "I think we have some depth at quarterback that's really exciting," the second-year head coach added. "But I think Terry, he's what we're looking for. He has experience at this level and it's kind of showing in the first two weeks of fall camp." - Albuquerque Journal

For the first half of Tuesday's football practice, the University of New Mexico defense was in control. But quarterback Terry Wilson and the Lobos' offense took over during the second half of practice, the team's first in pads during preseason camp. Over all, the Lobos have a long way to go before their opener Sept. 2, UNM coach Danny Gonzales said. "I don't think it was very good," Gonzales said of Tuesday's practice. "I thought it was a little bit softer than we like, which is a bad thing. First period wasn't very good, The last period I thought the offense picked it up a little bit." Wilson, a transfer from Kentucky, took the majority of the snaps with the first team and showed his dynamic running ability. Gonzales said Wilson's leadership stood out as well. The Lobos coach said he has been trying to change it up for a different QB to take the most snaps each practice. "He's a playmaker," wide receiver Cjay Boone said of Wilson. "Terry is a great quarterback. He's one of my guys. We always get extra work in every day. "Some of things that stick out about Terry is his running ability. That man can run. He's just a veteran. He's been able to make great passes. Obviously he's not going to be perfect every time, but he's doing his thing." - Albuq uerque Journal

Wilson, Gonzales and the other UNM quarterbacks said it's all about competing and no one will be handed the starting role. Yet, Wilson, a 6-foot-2, 203-pound dual threat, said he has done his research. He left Kentucky because he wants the opportunity to throw the ball more and showcase his arm talent. Wilson said he trusts UNM offensive coordinator Derek Warehime because he played for his "pops," Nick Warehime, the coach at the time at Del City High School in Oklahoma. "A lot of that is just confidence , just believing in yourself," Wilson, 23, said. In 2018 as a redshirt sophomore, Wilson led Kentucky to its first 10-win season since 1977. That season featured a 27-16 win at Florida for the first time since 1986, and ended with a 27-24 win over Penn S tate in the Citrus Bowl. He had just come from Garden City Community College in Kansas after he transferred from Oregon, where he redshirted his freshman season in 2016 when Justin Herbert beat him out for the Ducks' starting spot. Wilson suffered a torn patellar tendon in his left knee that required surgery after two games in his junior season in 2019. Last season, he completed 125 of 200 passes (62.5 completion rating) for 1,187 yards and seven touchdowns for the 5-6 Wildcats. - Albuquerque Journal

Terry Wilson, who started 25 games at Kentucky over three seasons, is transferring to the University of New Mexico, the Lobos announced Tuesday, UNM says he will be immediately eligible with one season to play. UNM's seven quarterbacks have 20 starts tot al. The Lobos went 2-5 in the virus-shortened 2020 season, the two wins coming at season's end, and were led by fifth-string walk-on QB Isaiah Chavez. Second-year coach Danny Gonzales had moved Trae Hall up to the top of the depth chart during spring pra ctice, which concludes Saturday with a spring game. But Gonzales also has said that he wanted a graduate transfer to come in and upgrade the Lobos at the position. - Albuquerque Journal

Kentucky football quarterback Terry Wilson is planning to use his extra season of eligibility but not at UK. Wilson served as Kentucky's starter for two full seasons and part of a third that ended early due to a knee injury. He led the Wildcats to wins a t Florida, Tennessee and Louisville as well as bowl victories over Penn State and NC State as the starting quarterback. However, he was the target of frequent criticism as Kentucky's offense failed to develop a consistent passing game during his tenure. The Oklahoma native finishes his UK career with a 17-8 record as starting quarterback. He is the first player in program history with at least 3,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in his career. - Courier Journal

Kentucky quarterback Terry Wilson says he will enter the NCAA transfer portal for his final season of eligibility after leading the Wildcats to two bowl wins in three years. Wilson announced his intention to transfer in an Instagram post Monday night in which he thanked his Kentucky coaches and teammates. He helped Kentucky beat No. 24 North Carolina State 23-21 in last weekend's Gator Bowl to cap his comeback from a season-ending left knee injury in the second game of 2019. Two years ago, Wilson guided Kentucky past Penn State in the Citrus Bowl to complete a 10-win season, its first since 1977. - AP College Football

Kentucky quarterback Terry Wilson accounted for three touchdowns, Chris Rodriguez rushed for two scores including a 74-yarder before the Wildcats withstood Vanderbilt's late rally to win 38-35 Saturday and end a two-game losing streak. Rested from a bye and with Wilson back from a one-game absence because of a wrist injury, the Wildcats (3-4, 3-4 Southeastern Conference) moved the ball at will against the Commodores (0-6, 0-6) with five TDs and a field goal on its first seven possessions. Wilson sandwic hed a 32-yard score in the first half between TD passes to tight ends Justin Rigg (15 yards) and Keaton Upshaw (21). Wilson completed 13 of 15 passes for 110 yards and rushed seven times for 83. Rodriguez rushed 13 times for a career-high 149 yards with TDs of 3 and 74 yards, the last providing a 17-point lead midway through the fourth quarter. Chance Poore, playing in place of Matt Ruffolo, kicked a 28-yard field goal. - AP College Football

As a runner, Wilson is one of Kentucky's best big-play threats. As a passer, he and a group of inconsistent receivers remain very much remain a work in progress. Wilson's statistics at Tennessee could have been even better if not for a touchdown pass tha t was dropped by sophomore tight end Keaton Upshaw and a deep pass down the sideline to senior wide receiver Josh Ali that was overturned on replay review. Even after those miscues, Wilson bounced back to lead Kentucky on an 11-play, 76-yard touchdown dr ive on its first possession of the third quarter. During that drive, he completed 3 of 4 passes for 31 yards, including a perfect pass to Allen Dailey for a touchdown on third-and-goal from the 1-yard line."We've got to help out the quarterback," Stoops said. "That (Upshaw drop) should have been a touchdown pass, but then it puts a little bit of pressure on you...Then we came right back and completed some and got some momentum going. I thought it was really important." With drops remaining a prob lem for the receivers and Wilson yet to show the type of touch needed to trust calling more than a few deep passes per game, UK offensive coordinator Eddie Gran rarely asks Wilson to take over games through the air. - Courier Journal

One week after Kentucky's senior quarterback played the best game of his UK career (completing 14 of 18 passes; running for 129 yards and three touchdowns) vs. Mississippi, the Oklahoma City product came back with a lackluster showing (eight of 20 passin g; 50 yards rushing) against Mississippi State. To have a shot at winning at Tennessee, Kentucky needs the better version of Wilson. - Herald Leader

The Kentucky starting quarterback returns after missing all but two games last season after suffering a torn patellar tendon in his left knee. Whether Wilson can improve on his 12-3 record as a UK starter may depend on how much faith he has in his rehabb ed knee and how quickly he is able to shed the rust from missing last year's final 11 games. - Herald Leader

Having several weeks of additional preparation before the Cats' first game should be a huge benefit to Wilson, Stoops said, but he has looked a lot like his former self through three practices. His comfort level in the pocket is good. Stoops is quick to blow his whistle on quarterback runs, but..."(When) he's pulling it down, he's like a bolt again, just like he used to be," Stoops said. "When he pulls it down, he can really run and hurt some people. He has a good feel for that...He looks really good ea rly in camp. It's only been three practices, but he looks really good." - Herald Leader

One hundred percent. That's where Terry Wilson plans to be, health-wise, whenever the University of Kentucky takes the field for its first practice of fall camp, regardless of when that might occur given the uncertainty surrounding college football becau se of the COVID-19 pandemic. If things ramp up around the start of August as usual, Wilson has every intention of being out there with dozens of other Wildcats eager to chase a fifth straight bowl appearance. "We don't know what date, but I've been putti ng in so much work just to be able to get back running and do all the little things," Wilson said in a recent phone interview with the Herald-Leader. "I've put in so much work and my confidence level is raising. There's no doubt in my mind that I'll be 1 00 percent ready for the season right before camp."There was a time not all that long ago that Wilson feared 100 percent was off the table. In the immediate aftermath of a knee injury that sidelined UK's starting quarterback for the final 11 games of the team's 2019 campaign, Wilson wondered whether he'd even be able to play football again. His injury - a tear of the patellar tendon in his left leg, which resulted from a horse-collar tackle during the third quarter of UK's game against Eastern Mi chigan last season - occurs at less than a third of the rate as tears of the anterior cruciate ligament, but recoveries following surgery for patellar tears have become more commonplace in recent years. - Herald Leader

Kentucky football's first battle of the 2020 season is not against Eastern Michigan or even rival Louisville. It is apparently against the SEC Network. On Wednesday, the network tweeted a video that appeared to mock UK quarterback Terry Wilson. The tweet was later removed but not before several members of UK program, including coach Mark Stoops and Wilson had responded. "The tweet was in poor taste and was removed swiftly," an SEC Network spokeswoman said in a statement provided to the Courier Journal. "We've reached out to Kentucky and are managing this internally."The tweet included a video of a montage of plays of Wilson being sacked with audio from a popular YouTube video titled "Back it up Terry." In the YouTube video, someone off camera ye lls at a man in a wheelchair to "back it up, Terry" after some fireworks are set off next to his chair. The Network deleted the tweet after Kentucky fans, including Kentucky Sports Radio host Matt Jones who has more 200,000 followers, began criticizing i t. Deleting the tweet was not enough to escape notice of the Kentucky football team though. Wilson tweeted, "Y'all wait and see what happens when I touch that field again. Trust me." - Courier Journal

During UK's allotted practice periods, Wilson is throwing the ball around and taking as many mental reps as possible with his fellow quarterbacks. That extra work is on top of class time, his regular strength and conditioning training as well as the reha b he's doing to rebuild his quad, the area most affected by the tear. The 6-foot-3 signal-caller has bulked up since the start of last season; he says he's at 215 pounds, about 12 pounds heavier than his listed weight entering the 2019 campaign. He stepp ed on a scale recently and was shocked to see that number. "Coach (Corey Edmond) has been doing a good job trying to get me ready, getting my lower half stronger and my upper body stronger on top of rehab," Wilson said. "I've been putting in some work." Kentucky's 2020 season opener is scheduled for Sept. 5 against, ironically, Eastern Michigan. Whether or not Wilson is healthy enough to start that game, there will be plenty of nervous energy coursing through his veins: Aug. 30, the Monday of that same week, is the scheduled due date for his first child. - Herald Leader

Kentucky coach Mark Stoops says quarterback Terry Wilson will miss the remainder of the season with a torn patellar tendon that will require surgery. Wilson was injured late in the third quarter Saturday night on a horse-collar tackle by Eastern Michigan defensive lineman Turan Rush. He was carted off the field for observation and an MRI on Sunday revealed the tear. A release from the school did not state when Wilson would have surgery.Stoops says he's "sorry" for Wilson's injury in the release. He added that the junior QB "done so much for program the last two seasons, both in leadership and his production on the field." Wilson's injury likely propels Troy junior transfer Sawyer Smith to starter for Saturday night's game against No. 9 Florida. Smith relieved Wilson and threw two touchdown passes to seal the 38-17 victory for Kentucky (2-0). - AP College Football

Terry Wilson threw two touchdown passes, Asim Rose and Kavosiey Smoke each ran for TDs and Kentucky overcame Toledo to pull away 38-24 on Saturday in the season opener for both schools. The Wildcats rallied twice against the Rockets to enter the break ti ed at 14 before taking control in the second half. A third-quarter fumble recovery led to Chance Poore's 46-yard, go-ahead field goal before Bryce Oliver's leaping grab of Wilson's 32-yard TD pass provided a 10-point lead. Smoke's 40-yard TD run down the left side midway through the fourth made it 31-17. Kentucky then converted DeAndre Square's interception into Wilson's 2-yard TD pass to Josh Ali to clinch the first meeting between the schools. - AP College Football
