Louisiana Tech has suspended voluntary football workouts "for at least a couple of days," school officials told The News-Star Monday afternoon. Another football player tested positive for COVID-19 and following contact tracing, "a couple more players" wi ll have to quarantine for 14 days. Per privacy laws, the identities of the players were not revealed. More than 40 players, including many returners who did not come back during the first wave of players back in June as well as incoming freshmen, reporte d to campus in Ruston Monday for "week 0," or the process the only allows them to get tested for the coronavirus and clear physicals. They are not allowed to workout until next Monday. Mandatory workouts for Tech are scheduled to begin July 13, as part o f the six-week preseason college football calendar the NCAA approved last month. - Monroe News Star

With several departures due to graduation from last year's 10-win squad, the defensive line is one of the biggest areas of immediate need in 2020 for Louisiana Tech. And help is on the way to Ruston, as former Texas senior defensive lineman Gerald Wilbon has committed to Tech, according to 247sports.com, which reports that the former Longhorn lent his verbal on May 14. He'll be immediately eligible to suit up for the Bulldogs this season. The addition of Wilbon marks the fifth transfer the Louisiana Tec h coaching staff has pulled in for the 2020 recruiting class.Tech signed Abilene Christian transfer quarterback Luke Anthony back on Signing Day, while it's landed former LSU guard Donavaughn Campbell, Virginia Tech safety Khalil Ladler and Tennes see receiver Jerrod Means, who'll have to sit out this year due to NCAA transfer rules, in three months since. Louisiana Tech welcomes back just two defensive linemen with significant playing time in ends Willie Baker and Milton Williams. The unit lost k ey pieces on the inside in senior defensive tackle Courtney Wallace, who signed an undrafted free agent deal with the New England Patriots following the 2020 NFL Draft, and senior Ka'Derrion Mason. Wilbon entered his name into the transfer portal Jan. 21 .
