Pitt added another wide receiver to a position already stocked with experienced players when coach Pat Narduzzi announced Friday that Melquise Stovall will enroll this year. Stovall, who verbally committed to Narduzzi last month, played the past two seas ons at Hawaii, recording 49 receptions for 480 yards and four touchdowns over two seasons (14 games, five starts). He also averaged 24.6 yards on 22 kickoff returns. Stovall (5-foot-9, 190 pounds) has one season of immediate eligibility remaining. He pla yed last season under Pitt wide receivers coach Brennan Marion, who joined Narduzzi's staff from Hawaii in February. Stovall will enroll in time for pre-camp workouts this summer.During his career at Paraclete (Calif.) High School, Stovall recorde d 7,650 all-purpose yards and 88 touchdowns. He was rated the nation's No. 3 all-purpose back in the class of 2016 by 247Sports and played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. "Melquise is an explosive guy with the ball in his hands. He adds another playm aker to our wide receivers group," Narduzzi said in a statement. "When we watched Hawaii game tape with coach Marion during his interview process, Melquise stood out on video to us even then. "When he later entered the (NCAA) transfer portal, we didn't e ven need to watch his tape. We already knew he was a really good football player. Melquise Stovall, a graduate transfer receiver from Hawaii, committed to Pitt on Friday afternoon, bringing experience to an already deep position and joining Marion, Pitt's new wideouts coach after leaving the Rainbow Warriors in February. Stovall will have one season with the Panthers thanks to the NCAA's blanket waiver not counting the 2020 season against any athletes' eligibility clock. Stovall is entering his sixth season of college football with 108 catches and 1,184 yards to his name. The 5-foot- 9, 190-pound pass-catcher began his career at Cal after being courted as a four-star prospect. The California native chose the Golden Bears over offers from Notre Dame, USC, North Carolina and Miami, among others. - Pittsburgh Post Gazette

For University of Hawaii senior wide receiver Melquise Stovall, there's no shortage of motivation each time that he runs out of the tunnel with the Rainbow Warriors. Just a season ago, Stovall was dismissed from the UH Football team by then head coach Ni ck Rolovich despite having recorded 248 yards on 18 receptions and four scores, including two touchdowns in his final game. That final game was against Air Force, where he scored two touchdowns in the first half but did not play after halftime following a personal foul penalty in the second quarter. The Monday after that game was played, Rolovich announced that the Lancaster, California native was no longer on the team."There are certain expectations required of a football student-athlete here at the University of Hawaii," Rolovich said at the time. "We hold all our student-athletes to these standards and expect them to represent our football program to the highest degree. We wish Melquise the best as he moves forward." Following the dismissal, Stovall remained in Hawaii and after Rolovich left for Washington State and head coach Todd Graham was hired to lead the Rainbow Warriors, Stovall asked for and was granted an opportunity to regain his spot on the team after keeping up with school work t hroughout the semesters that followed. "I think my family really pushed me. I have a family back home that is depending on me. So, just waking up everyday thinking about them and all the wrong that I've done to them, try to better myself every day. Just by doing the little things like going to class, doing my homework, being a better person out in public. Saying hello to people that I don't know, just being more interactive. Melquise Stovall, a dynamic receiver/returner, is on track to being fully reinstated to the Hawaii football team. "He's doing everything I've asked him to do at this point," head coach Todd Graham said. "And as long as he does that, he'll be with us. I'v e been very proud of his progress so far. I don't want to get ahead of myself, either." Stovall had productive back-to-back games - two touchdowns catches against Boise State and two against Air Force - when he was dismissed from the team on Oct. 21. "Th ere are certain expectations required of a football student-athlete here at the University of Hawaii," then UH coach Nick Rolovich said in an Oct. 21 news release announcing the dismissal."We hold all of our student-athletes to these standards and expect them to represent our football program to the highest degree. We wish Melquise the best as he moves forward." Stovall continued to attend classes the remainder of the semester. After Graham was hired to succeed Rolovich, who resigned in January t o accept the head coaching job at Washington State, several players lobbied for Stovall's reinstatement. "They said, 'he messed up. He made a mistake,' " Graham recalled. "(Stovall) came in and said, 'I was dead wrong. I want a second chance. And Coach, you will not regret it.'
