Ohio State football announced seven team captains on Tuesday, but one potential returning captain was not on the list. Buckeyes coach Ryan Day said former walk-on receiver C.J. Saunders' appeal for a medical hardship waiver and a sixth year of eligibilit y was denied by the NCAA. Saunders will instead join the coaching staff in some capacity, per Day. That role has not yet been determined. "He's got coaching in his blood, and he wants to be a part of this season," Day said. "I just wanted to make sure, p ublicly, we all thank C.J. for everything he's done for our program. He's meant a lot to us, and we're certainly disappointed he can't play this season. But we're excited he's still going to be a part of our program." Saunders' decision does alleviate Oh io State's roster crunch. The Buckeyes are now at the 85 scholarship limit for the fall. Saunders rose from walk-on to team captain over his first five seasons in the program. Yet he was not able to play at all in 2019 due to a lingering knee injury. - C leveland Plain Dealer
