Former Ohio State receiver and grad assistant C.J. Saunders is getting a pro football shot. Saunders will play in The Spring League, the developmental football league that plays in the spring. The league confirmed Saunders has joined the roster of its Aviators team. The Aviators and other North Division teams are based on Indianapolis, play games at Lucas Oil Stadium and are broadcast on Fox, FS1 and FS2. South Division teams are based in Houston. Saunders came to Ohio State as a walk-on from Dunlin Coffman High School in suburban Columbus and rose to become a team captain. He totaled 294 yards and a touchdown on 27 career receptions. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Ohio State football announced seven team captains on Tuesday, but one potential returning captain was not on the list. Buckeyes coach Ryan Day said former walk-on receiver C.J. Saunders' appeal for a medical hardship waiver and a sixth year of eligibility was denied by the NCAA. Saunders will instead join the coaching staff in some capacity, per Day. That role has not yet been determined. "He's got coaching in his blood, and he wants to be a part of this season," Day said. "I just wanted to make sure, publicly, we all thank C.J. for everything he's done for our program. He's meant a lot to us, and we're certainly disappointed he can't play this season. But we're excited he's still going to be a part of our program." Saunders' decision does alleviate Ohio State's roster crunch. The Buckeyes are now at the 85 scholarship limit for the fall. Saunders rose from walk-on to team captain over his first five seasons in the program. Yet he was not able to play at all in 2019 due to a lingering knee injury. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  06/04/20 - WR C.J. SaundersSr/2021, Ohio State, 5-10, 179 (DS#92 WR) + More +

Ohio State wide receiver C.J. Saunders will not face a misdemeanor charge for violating curfew in Columbus, according to online court records. A Franklin County Municipal Court judge dismissed his case for time served during an arraignment Thursday. Saunders had been arrested for a curfew violation Monday night near just north of Ohio State's campus after attending protests over the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died while in police custody in Minneapolis last week.

Since last weekend, Columbus has had a curfew implemented that starts at 10 p.m. and expires at 6 a.m. in an effort to quell some of the demonstrations, which have arisen in cities across the country. Saunders was held in the Franklin County jail before he posted a $104 bond Tuesday morning. In the aftermath of Floyd's death, Saunders has been outspoken regarding issues involving racial justice. He was featured in a video message promoting racial equality that was released by Ohio State and addressed a crowd at a player-driven protest on Tuesday. - Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State football receiver C.J. Saunders was arrested Monday night for a violation of the curfew imposed in Columbus in response to widespread protests. According to online court records, Saunders posted bond Tuesday morning. His arraignment on a misdemeanor charge of violation of ordered curfew is scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday. Eleven Warriors first reported Saunders' arrest. The arrest report cited did not specify whether Saunders was participating in a protest. A 10 p.m.-6 a.m. curfew had been imposed in Columbus, and according to that report, Columbus Police Department officers detained Saunders at 10:45 p.m. Saunders, a former walk-on who earned a scholarship, was selected as a team captain for the 2019 season. However, he did not play due to lingering injuries. He has been in the process of seeking an NCAA medical hardship waiver that would grant him a sixth year of eligibility so he can return to the team in 2020. Saunders was one of 16 Buckeye players included in an anti-racism video posted to Twitter on Monday night. - Cleveland Plain Dealer
