In a canary yellow tux, DeVonta Smith added a new trophy to his case Saturday night. The former Alabama receiver took home an ESPY from the prime-time broadcast on ABC. The Heisman winner claimed the ESPY for best college athlete, men's sports. It was th e first time an Alabama athlete claimed that award after Mark Ingram (2010) and Derrick Henry (2016) were previously finalists. After accepting the honor, Smith said this was an experience he only could've dreamed of as a kid. Alabama was also a finalist for best team and Smith was a finalist for best record-breaking performance. The only other ESPY for Alabama went to Tyrone Prothro when he won in 2006 for best play ESPY for his legendary catch against Southern Miss. - Birmingham News

Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores is not concerned about Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith's size. The idea that the 2020 Heisman Trophy winner isn't big enough to flourish in the NFL doesn't register with Flores, who is guiding the National team for t he Reese's Senior Bowl in Mobile. "Look, this guy's a very, very good player," Flores said during a press conference on Tuesday. "… If you're a good player, I mean, you can nitpick all you want about a guy's size. Good players are good players are good players. I think we all can see that this guy's a very good player. He made a lot of plays in college. He made a lot of plays in big games, the biggest games of the year. You can nitpick all day. He's a very good player. "And it's been good getting to k now him, too. He's a good kid, too."So how big is Smith? The Alabama roster lists the wide receiver as 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds. On Tuesday, Smith passed on the opportunity to step on the scales at the Senior Bowl weigh-in and show exactly how slim "The Slim Reaper" is. After suffering a finger injury during Alabama's 52-24 victory over Ohio State in the CFP national championship game on Jan. 11, Smith is not practicing this week and won't play in Saturday's game. But he is on Flores' National ros ter and meeting with NFL personnel for interviews. "DeVonta Smith was here only to do interviews with NFL teams," said Jim Nagy, the Senior Bowl's executive director. "He always planned to do his measurements at Alabama's pro day." - Birmingham News

The NFL Scouting Combine was about the last thing the league did in 2020 that wasn't affected by the coronavirus pandemic. But almost a year later, the NFL has decided the 2021 version of the event will be drastically changed because of the COVID-19 cris is. The top prospects for the NFL Draft won't gather in Indianapolis next month, as they have annually since 1987. But the league doesn't consider the combine canceled. Instead, a memo sent from the league office to the NFL's 32 teams on Monday said, "Th e 2021 combine will be conducted in a different format. There will be no in-person workouts at the combine. Instead, any workouts will take place on the individual pro days on college campuses." To keep each team from having to send personnel to every co llege pro day, the NFL said it would "ensure that all clubs have access to video from those workouts." - Birmingham News

It was almost the perfect ending for DeVonta Smith but a finger injury ended his final Alabama game early. The Heisman Trophy winner left with a dislocated finger on the second snap of the second half of Alabama's 52-24 win over Ohio State in the nationa l championship game. "It was dislocated and they couldn't get it back in," Nick Saban said in the aftermath. "If they'd have got it back in, he would have been fine. He actually wanted to play, we just didn't allow him to." Smith was in the sideline inju ry tent for an extended period before walking back to the locker room.ESPN cameras caught Smith under the stadium, walking between the locker room and other medical rooms after going down early in the second half. He later emerged on the sideline but no longer in uniform. Saban smiled when talking about the situation in the postgame. "I told Smitty after the game, I said, You're the only player that I know that missed a whole half because of your finger," Saban said - Birmingham News

DeVonta Smith did not catch a single pass after halftime. He didn't have to, either. He'd done plenty. The Heisman Trophy-winning receiver from Alabama put his stamp all over the College Football Playoff championship game in the first two quarters, and t he Crimson Tide are national champions once again. Smith had 12 catches for 215 yards and three touchdowns - all those scores coming in the second quarter - to lead the Tide past Ohio State 52-24 on Monday night. He won everything there was to win this s eason: the national title, the Heisman, and became the first FBS player since Michael Crabtree in 2007 to lead the nation in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. Next stop, the NFL. - AP College Football

Six Alabama players were named to the first team of the Walter Camp All-America list Thursday night, the most first-team selections by one team in the 131-year history of the list. Of that group, five became unanimous All-America selections: running back Najee Harris, wide receiver DeVonta Smith, left tackle Alex Leatherwood, center Landon Dickerson and cornerback Patrick Surtain. Each was named to the first team of all of the five lists recognized by the NCAA. The five unanimous All-America selections are the most in any single season in school history. The previous high was three players in both 2011 and 2016. Nationally, Alabama matched Oklahoma's five unanimous selections in 2003. - Birmingham News

Alabama rolled into another College Football Playoff championship game. DeVonta Smith caught three of fellow Heisman Trophy finalist Mac Jones’ four touchdown passes, Najee Harris ran for 125 yards with a high-hurdling highlight and top-ranked Alabama beat No. 4 Notre Dame 31-14 in the relocated Rose Bowl game Friday to reach its fifth CFP title game. While the location for this Rose Bowl was truly untraditional, the Crimson Tide (12-0, No. 1 CFP) playing for the national title is a common occurrence in seven seasons of the CFP.The Crimson Tide earned a spot in the Jan. 11 championship game in Miami, against No. 2 Clemson or No. 3 Ohio State. The Tigers and Buckeyes played in the other CFP semifinal at the Sugar Bowl. Notre Dame (10-2, No. 4 C FP), in football’s final four for only the second time, has lost seven consecutive New Year’s Six games since 2000. Alabama led 14-0 after scoring the first two times it had the ball, including an 97-yard drive on which Harris leaped over 6-foot corn erback Nick McCloud just after crossing the line of scrimmage, landed on both feet and then sprinted for a 53-yard gain before getting run out of bounds. Jones threw a 12-yard TD pass to tight end Jahleel Billingsley on the next play. - AP College Footba ll

He didn't know it at the time, but Chris Doering was on camera in studio when his SEC career record was broken. Doering was a wide receiver for Florida from 1991-95, starting as a redshirt freshman walk-on and exiting as the SEC record holder for career receiving touchdowns. Doering's record was tied by Amari Cooper in 2014, but it was unbeaten until DeVonta Smith's 10-yard touchdown catch early in the second quarter against Kentucky, the 32nd of his career. Doering's reaction epitomized the inevitabili ty of the moment. "He's just so steady," he said.Doering is now an analyst for the SEC Network and shared his insights with The Tuscaloosa News on Smith's breakout season that already has him owning one SEC record with more on the horizon. "He's s uch a good route runner," Doering said. "The thing that's always stood out to me is how good his hands are. Most people on balls behind or aren't perfect have to stop, dip their hip and reach back, and it takes away momentum. He trusts his hands so much to the point on throws most people cradle in, he turns his hands and catches with his thumbs, which is another sign of how much he truly trusts his hands." - Montgomery Advertiser

With just two weeks to go in the season, the Heisman race is a virtual dead heat with the front-runners slated to go head-to-head on the final day of the regular season. Florida QB Kyle Trask continues to hold the lead in the USA TODAY Network weekly Hei sman survey. But Alabama QB Mac Jones closed the gap this week with help from one of his teammates, who is also making a late push for the award. But while Jones closed the gap thanks to his big night at LSU, the highlight-filled performance of DeVonta S mith on the other end of many of his throws did not go unnoticed. Smith had three touchdown catches and over 200 receiving yards in the first half alone and now has 15 scores and 1,305 yards for the season. DeVonta Smith leaped and extended his right arm for a football only he could catch. In the corner of the end zone at Tiger Stadium, the Alabama senior wide receiver pulled down a one-handed touchdown as LSU's best cornerback, Derek Stingley Jr., looked f rom the ground. Stingley had played almost perfect coverage. Tracking Smith from the outside, he stayed on Smith's upfield shoulder, anticipating a fake post. He turned his hips when Smith broke for the corner. He allowed no separation. He read Smith's b ody and looked for the ball. And it didn't matter. Stingley fell as Smith elevated. The catch marked Smith's third touchdown of the first half in his return to his home state. Already the Southeastern Conference leader for career touchdown receptio ns, Smith shredded LSU's secondary during Alabama's 55-17 win Saturday night, setting a new record for yards receiving (231) by an opponent in Tiger Stadium. LSU had no answers for him. "He's killing us," coach Ed Orgeron said on LSU's halftime radio sho w. Smith, an Amite native, deserved much of the credit for Alabama scoring its most points ever against LSU. He finished with eight receptions and three touchdowns. He averaged 28.9 yards per catch. He scored two touchdowns over 60 yards. He caused Orger on to rip off his headset and throw it against the ground. No other Alabama receiver gained more than 70 yards. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Asked about DeVonta Smith's potential Heisman Trophy candidacy and whether Smith is the "best player in the country," Saban responded, "Well, you're asking me a question -- I don't see every player playing in the country. I love Smitty. I think he's an o utstanding player for our team. Probably done as much this year for our team as any player that we've ever had. He's a great leader on the team. It's not fair to compare him to somebody else that you didn't even see. But I don't think there's many player s in the country that have done more to their team than Smitty does for our team." - Birmingham News

Only twice since 2003 has a wide receiver been a Heisman finalist. That should change this year. DeVonta Smith finished Saturday with eight catches, 231 yards and three touchdowns. In the last four games, Smith has posted 35 catches, 749 yards and 11 tou chdowns. For the year, the senior is up to 80 catches, 1,305 yards and 15 touchdowns. In only nine games. "He's probably done as much this year for our team as any player that we've ever had," head coach Nick Saban said after the game. - Birmingham News

Mac Jones passed for 385 yards and four touchdowns and No. 1 Alabama used a slew of explosive plays to run away from LSU 55-17 on Saturday night. Jones threw three of his touchdown passes to Louisiana native DeVonta Smith, who went to the same high schoo l as Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards and finished with eight catches for 231 yards in his return to his home state. Smith's first two touchdowns went for 65 and 61 yards to cap three-play, 75-yard drives for Alabama (9-0, 9-0 SEC). But his third touchdow n catch from 20-yards out appeared to be his most difficult. He shed close coverage from top LSU cornerback Derrick Stingley Jr. and made a twisting, leaping catch high over his head before landing on his back deep in the end zone.Najee Harris rus hed for 145 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries, juking, shedding and even leaping over LSU defenders along the way. LSU (3-5, 3-5) showed signs of life in the second quarter, scoring on a pair of long plays. One nearly didn't happen when receiver K ayshon Bouttee caught a 43-yard pass and released the ball in celebration just before crossing the goal line. Luckily for LSU, Jontre Kirkland was following the play and picked the ball up in the end zone to complete LSU's first scoring play against Alab ama in Tiger Stadium since 2014. - Alabama/AP College Football

Saban said they've been able to use the play-action pass or bubble screens to get him the ball creatively. The first of his two touchdown catches against Auburn came on a play-action look that included a violent Jones pump fake before hitting Smith wide open - almost 10 yards behind the nearest defender - for a 66-yard touchdown. "He's a smart guy," Saban said. "He can play all the positions, which is very helpful, because some guys that you have playing receiver, it's almost like the defensive backs, s ome guys can just play corner, they can't play anything else. Some guys can just play split end or X receiver as we call it. Other guys can only play Z or the flanker position. But in Smitty's case, because he can play H, he can play X, you can play Z, I mean, we can move him all over the place."Smith was in the slot for the first touchdown, then got free for his second score lined up wide. He faked a blocking action to free himself for a slant Jones delivered for a 48-yard touchdown. "Defenses c an try to lock in on DeVonta," Metchie said. "I don't think...It's kind of hard to stop somebody like that. Personally, I think Smitty is the best player in college football right now. I would say everything has been kind of the same. I will continue to do what I can to help this team win and Smitty will continue to do what he does day in and day out." - Birmingham News

Once the Iron Bowl kicked off, Nick Saban was just another passionate, heavily invested fan who was powerless to help his team win. His team still won — big. Mac Jones passed for 302 yards and a career-high five touchdowns, highlighted by two long ones to DeVonta Smith, and No. 1 Alabama rolled over rival No. 22 Auburn 42-13 without Saban. The Crimson Tide continued a dominating march through a schedule of all-Southeastern Conference games even minus its six-time national champion coach on the sidelin e. Saban tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday and watched the game feed from home, witnessing the usual array of big plays with offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian running the show. - AP College Football

This is the 80th time in the history of the AP poll, which dates back to 1936, there has been a unanimous No. 1. It was a rare occurrence in the early days of the poll, when college football was more regional. From 1936-66, only twice was there a unanimo us No. 1. Southern California was a unanimous No. 1 twice during the 1967 season, but not until the 1990s did the unanimous No. 1 become a common occurrence. From 1992, when Alabama finished the season by getting all the first-place votes in the poll, to last season when LSU did the same, the AP Top 25 had a unanimous No. 1 on 67 occasions. The unanimous No. 1 for Alabama is its 22nd overall, most of any school, and its 21st since 2012. - AP College Football

DeVonta Smith caught nine passes for 144 yards and set the Southeastern Conference career record with two more touchdowns in No. 1 Alabama's 63-3 victory over short-handed Kentucky on Saturday. Mac Jones passed for 230 yards and two touchdowns and Najee Harris ran for a pair of scores for the Crimson Tide (7-0 SEC), both in less than three quarters. A slow start turned into a breezy return from a three-week layoff after LSU was forced to call off last week's scheduled game because of COVID-19 troubles. The outmanned Wildcats (3-5) were missing a number of key players because of injuries or coronavirus protocol. They were competitive early on the stat sheet, but it didn't hold up particularly long on the scoreboard.Smith broke Amari Cooper's SEC and Alabama record with his 32nd touchdown catch, a 10-yarder from Jones in the second quarter. He added an 18-yarder from freshman backup Bryce Young. Jones completed 16 of 24 passes but also was intercepted at the goal line in a rare mistake. Harris ha d a 42-yard touchdown run and gained 83 yards on 13 carries. Kentucky quarterback Terry Wilson passed for just 120 yards and was benched after throwing an interception that Jordan Battle returned 45 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. Joey Gatewo od and Beau Allen couldn't get anything going, either. The Wildcats gained 121 yards in the first quarter and 60 the rest of the way. - Alabama/AP College Football

DeVonta Smith's next receiving touchdown will break Amari Cooper's school and SEC career record of 31; Cooper shares the SEC record with former Florida receiver Chris Doering. The touchdown would also give Smith nine for the season, which would move him into a tie for eighth in single-season school history; Smith's 2019 season, with 14 touchdowns, is tied for second. - Montgomery Advertiser

Alabama still has DeVonta Smith, another playmaking wide receiver who's awfully hard to defend. Mac Jones threw four touchdown passes to Smith and the wideout had 203 yards receiving as the second-ranked Crimson Tide began life without Jaylen Waddle with a 41-0 victory over Mississippi State on Saturday night without. The Crimson Tide (6-0) had a dominant defensive performance, handing new Bulldogs coach Mike Leach the first shutout of his college career. It was Alabama's first shutout since a 24-0 vict ory over Mississippi State on Nov. 10, 2018. Smith caught first-quarter touchdowns passes of 35 and 53 yards to help send the Bulldogs (1-4) to their fourth straight loss. Smith took over the starring receiving role in the absence of Waddle, lost to a li kely season-ending ankle injury. He made 11 catches and moved into a tie with Amari Cooper for the most career receiving touchdowns with No. 31 early in the fourth. Smith also vaulted over Jerry Jeudy and Calvin Ridley into No. 3 on Alabama's career rece iving yards list with 2,868. - Alabama/AP College Football

If we're talking math, 50% chances aren't always worth taking on the football field. Throw it up and see what happens? Nah. Alabama receivers aren't thinking about a coin toss when Mac Jones fires one deep through four games. DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle and John Metchie are the main targets in those moments with Smith winning his share of jump balls. "We expect him to make those type of plays," Waddle said. "We don't consider them 50-50 balls when Smitty's the one after it." Smith caught back-of-the-en d zone touchdowns in two of the last three weeks on plays that required equal parts concentration, footwork and strength. Both were well defended, he just played it better.Waddle is known for his ability to climb the ladder and snag some tough pas ses, too. He started the year with a jump ball at Missouri the led to an early touchdown. What's his take on an acceptable percentage if 50-50 isn't right? "Well for one, our position coach, if you touch it when it's thrown to you, we expect you to catch it," Waddle said. "That's just our mentality in that room. Smitty's just one of the best at it, if not the best, at those types of balls." His fourth-quarter dagger on a 13-yard pass from Jones was just the latest example of connecting the high-point ca tch with careful footwork. Smith's 38 catches rank second in the SEC behind only Ole Miss' Elijah Moore' 42. He had 13 catches at Ole Miss and 11 against Georgia including the nifty fourth-quarter touchdown. - Birmingham News

Alabama doesn't need any help defeating opponents. Georgia felt generous on Saturday night, though, and gave the Crimson Tide plenty of aid with a bundle of mistakes in the second half of a 41-24 loss. Despite an interception on the initial drive from ju nior quarterback Stetson Bennett, the Bulldogs played fairly clean in the first half. The pick came on a deflection, the offense rolled up 24 points and the defense, for the most part, kept the explosive Crimson Tide offense in check. Still, one play stu ck out to Georgia head coach Kirby Smart after the game. On Alabama's second touchdown, junior quarterback Mac Jones bluffed a bubble screen to junior receiver Jaylen Waddle and lofted a 17-yard touchdown pass to senior DeVonta Smith to tie the game at 1 7. "It's actually a play we repped and gave it up for a touchdown to the scout team," Smart said. "Then they beat us with it." - Macon Telegraph

Alabama's offense was too much for Georgia's defense. Mac Jones passed for 417 yards and four touchdowns, and the No. 2 Crimson Tide's aerial assault picked apart No. 3 Georgia's heralded defense in the second half of a 41-24 victory. Alabama, with coach Nick Saban stalking the sideline after a COVID-19 scare, rallied with three touchdowns in a 10-minute span starting late in the third quarter of a battle of the Southeastern Conference's last remaining unbeatens. The nation's top scoring offense ultimat ely got the decisive upper hand in a battle with the Bulldogs and one of the nation's best defenses. Georgia had no answer for Jones and star receivers Jaylen Waddle and DeVonta Smith, especially with Alabama's own beleaguered defense grabbing two second -half interceptions and three overall. - AP College Football

Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith said Tuesday he is not opting out of the upcoming fall football season. "I believe if I was thinking about not playing, I wouldn't be here right now," Smith said during a video news conference, which was his first orga nized media availability since the Citrus Bowl in January. Smith chose to return to Alabama in January for his final season of eligibility after leading the Tide with 1,256 receiving yards and 14 touchdown catches in 2019. "[It was] just really [about] g etting my degree and wanting to come back and finish things the right way," he explained Tuesday. The SEC will require football players to be tested at least twice each game week during the upcoming season. That is among multiple protocols related to covid-19 that were announced by the SEC on Friday. In a news release, the conference said it made the decision in consultation with a 14-member medical task force that was assembled in April. Football players and anyone in close contact with the team will typically be tested six days and three days prior to scheduled games. The league's medical task for ce recommends exploring ways to conduct a third test with a rapid response closer to the time of a game. Game officials will be tested once each week. The SEC will use a third party to conduct the testing. According to the task force, team medical person nel must have "unchallengeable autonomous authority" related to determine when players can return to play, consistent with NCAA rules. - Northwest Arkansas Times

For the first time since 2015, the SEC will enter the college football season without a team ranked No. 1 in the Amway Coaches Poll. Alabama owned that spot each of the past four years. This year, that honor went to Clemson. But that doesn't mean the bes t conference in the sport isn't well-represented at the top. Six SEC teams were ranked in the preseason poll, which was released Thursday. Three of those - Alabama, Georgia and defending national champion LSU - rounded out the top five behind Clemson and No. 2 Ohio State, in that order. Florida came in at No. 8, Auburn at No. 11 and Texas A&M at No. 13. No other conference had more than four teams ranked in the top 15 (No. 2 Ohio State, No. 7 Penn State, No. 12 Wisconsin and No. 15 Michigan represent th e Big Ten). - Montgomery Advertiser
