Leading into the NFL Draft, there was reason to believe that Alabama quarterback Mac Jones would be the third player picked on Thursday night. Instead, the San Francisco 49ers chose North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance at No. 3, and Jones didn't hea r his name called until No. 15, when he went to the New England Patriots. And that was fine by Jones. "At the end of the day, you kind of want to just get the right fit," Jones told reporters after being picked, "and I feel like, secretly, I really wante d to go to the Patriots all along, so I'm actually really happy that it happened. "But it doesn't really matter. You get picked. You got to take the opportunity and take advantage of it and learn the new system, learn the new coaches, learn the new cultu re, and coach (Bill) Belichick's done a great job establishing that throughout his time in New England."Jones enters the NFL after helping Alabama win the 2020 CFP national championship with an undefeated season. That was the sixth national title for coach Nick Saban at Alabama. By joining Belichick in New England, Jones goes to a coach who has won six Super Bowls with the Patriots. "New England's just a great place," Jones said. "In watching them the past years, they do everything right. It's al l about the team. That's kind of what I grew up knowing is being a good teammate, and, then, obviously winning it comes down to winning football games, and New England's done that. But they don't look in the past, they just look in the future … so I'm just looking forward to getting in there and meeting my new teammates and seeing what happens from there." - Birmingham News

A smaller guest list for the first round of the 2021 NFL draft will still include a heavy Alabama presence. The league announced the 13 players who'll attend next Thursday's first round in Cleveland and five played at Alabama. That list includes Mac Jone s, DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle, Christian Barmore and Patrick Surtain. Projected No. 1 pick Trevor Lawrence of Clemson is not on the list of players who'll be in Cleveland for the draft. A group of 45 others will be participating virtually including Ala bama products Landon Dickerson, Dylan Moses, Najee Harris and Alex Leatherwood. That brings the Alabama total to nine players with the next highest number is three participants each from LSU, Miami, Penn State and USC. - Birmingham News

There may be a shift in the way the quarterback position is played, but to call it an evolution in the position might be a stretch. On Wednesday, Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin joined "The Pat McAfee Show" and was asked in a world of dual-threat quarterback preparing for the NFL draft is the pocket-passer dead? "I don't think it's dead. I would put (Alabama quarterback) Mac Jones in that category and they just won a national championship, basically blew out everybody they played," Kiffin, a former Alabama o ffensive coordinator, said. "I think it works, obviously. They set a lot of records there. No matter who your quarterback is, you need to have the right pieces around them. And so, if you have a pocket passer, you're going to need to stretch the field mo re, because you're not going to run the guy as much. And that's what they had at Alabama with the great receivers." Jones' name has been trending in NFL draft circles with some suggesting he could go as high as No. 3 to the San Francisco 49ers. - Birming ham News

Alabama football hosted its second Pro Day for NFL Draft prospects in two weeks Tuesday afternoon. It was televised on the SEC and NFL Networks. Several NFL executives and head coaches were in attendance to check out the plethora of NFL talent that coach Nick Saban produces each year. Saban has had 33 players drafted in the first round and 38 total. San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan were two of those there to see potential top-five pick, Mac Jones in his second throwing session in as many weeks. John Lynch, Bill Belichick, Josh McDaniels and Kyle Shanahan at Alabama's Pro Day. The 49ers recently traded their first-round pick, 12th overall, plus a 2022 third-round compensatory pick and first-round picks in 2022 and 2023 for the Miami Dolphins No. 3 overall selection. Several mock drafts and NFL analysts have speculated the 49ers will pick the SEC single-season passing yards leader with that third pick. - Montgomery Advertiser

Former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones took part in his first of two pro days Tuesday, throwing about 50 scripted passes in front of a large group of NFL scouts in Tuscaloosa. Jones' top wide receivers from last season, DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle, wer e in attendance but did not participate in drills. Rising junior receiver John Metchie is recovering from injury, leaving Slade Bolden and Xavier Williams as Jones' targets Tuesday along with former Alabama tight ends Miller Forristall and Carl Tucker, a nd fullback/linebacker Joshua McMillon. "It was a little different than a typical pro day script just because of the people we had out there," Jones told SEC Network. "We had to use two underclassmen and obviously Miller, Carl and Josh did a great job. B ut I feel like I could've thrown it better. It is what it is. I have one more pro day, got to come out and show what I got. "I really don't think it was as good as I probably wanted it to be. I'll probably be pissed about it for 20 minutes, but I'll be g ood after that." - Birmingham News

DeVonta Smith was uncoverable, Najee Harris unstoppable and Mac Jones impeccable. With a performance that was both surgical and explosive, No. 1 Alabama won the College Football Playoff national championship game 52-24 against No. 3 Ohio State on Monday night. The final game of a college football season in a pandemic, a season that was uncertain to be played in the summer and filled with disruptions in the fall, ended in the most predictable fashion: Alabama (13-0) as national champion for the sixth tim e in the last 12 years under coach Nick Saban. For Saban, it was career title No. 7 overall, breaking a tie with Alabama great Paul "Bear" Bryant for the most by a major college coach. Ohio State (7-1) just couldn't keep up. Justin Fields, playing what might be his last game before heading to the NFL, passed for 194 yards and a touchdown. Whether Fields was 100% after taking a brutal hit to the side during his brilliant semifinal performance against Clemson was hard to know for sure. - Alabama/AP College Football

It did not take a degree in art history to decipher a Monday afternoon tweet by Alabama football's official account. In a graphic captioned, "No Coach, but we still managed," the program posted a graphic to the social media platform that included a pictu re of Mac Jones and the words, "Manager Material." No Coach, but we still managed. The tweet and graphic were an apparent reference to a comment made by Nix last Tuesday when he was asked about Jones. "Yeah, he does a great job managing the game, getting the ball to the players around him," Nix said."Obviously he's got a great running back, great offensive line, great receivers. That helps a lot. But he does a great job of managing the game, taking completions and knowing what to do with the ball ." While ostensibly a compliment of Jones, the comment made its way to Alabama's locker room. It seemed to strike a nerve among players who viewed the Alabama quarterback of being more capable than a "game manager" - a slight used against quarterbacks wh o avoid mistakes but do not have talent to win games with their arms. "I think we did [use it as motivation]," wide receiver DeVonta Smith said after Alabama's 42-13 win. "I sent it to Mac and showed him. It was just funny, just seeing that. But I mean, at the end of the day, people gonna talk, they're gonna do what they want. At the end of the day, we're just gonna show up, execute the game plan and do what we gotta do." - Birmingham News

As the temperatures cooled this fall, so did Mac Jones' statistical production - until the Iron Bowl. After a few weeks of slipping slightly from the sky-high figures he posted earlier this season, the Alabama quarterback on Saturday sliced through Aubur n's defense, which entered ranked third in the SEC. Jones threw for a career-high five touchdowns in a 42-13 win while completing 18-of-26 passes for 302 yards. In the process, he re-established himself as a true threat to win the Heisman Trophy. "I thou ght Mac played really, really well," coach Nick Saban said after the game. "I'm sure that when we look at the film, everybody will see some things they could have done better, and that's what we want to focus on moving forward - what we have to do to imp rove. He certainly made the plays he needed to make today."The redshirt junior was not honored as part of senior day at Bryant-Denny Stadium but will likely enter the NFL draft this winter. That would make Saturday the seventh and final start for Jones in Tuscaloosa. Jones' numbers over those seven games, six of which came against SEC opponents: 130-for-174 passing (74.7 percent), 2,185 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, three interceptions and a 224.16 rating. - Birmingham News

Mac Jones passed for 302 yards and five touchdowns, highlighted by two long ones to DeVonta Smith, and No. 1 Alabama rolled over rival No. 22 Auburn 42-13 on Saturday without coach Nick Saban. The Crimson Tide (8-0, No. 1 playoff rankings) continued a do minating march through a schedule of all-Southeastern Conference games even minus its six-time national champion coach on the sideline. Saban tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday and watched the game feed from home, witnessing the usual array of big plays with offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian running the show. The result was much of the same against the Tigers (5-3), who suffered the second-most lopsided loss of Gus Malzahn's coaching tenure. The only bigger margin was Alabama's 52-21 wi n in the 2018 Iron Bowl. Alabama started a string of three straight touchdowns with Jones's 66-yard touchdown to Smith, who was streaking by himself downfield after Auburn defenders bit on a pump fake. He later added a 58-yard catch and run on a quick sl ant, sprinting away from the Tigers. Smith had seven catches for 171 yards. Najee Smith ran for 96 yards, including a 39-yard touchdown, and John Metchie III caught a pair of scoring passes. Bo Nix passed for 227 yards and ran for a late touchdown for th e Tigers, but also threw two interceptions. - Alabama/AP College Football

Jones on Monday said he's noticed teams playing more conservatively against him in recent games. "A lot of teams have kind of been backing up more and more," Jones said, "so we have to find ways to squirt the ball out, get into the flat or even with my d ecision-making, just find a way to check the ball down and get the yards that we can get." Saban after beating Mississippi State mentioned the Bulldogs used a similar strategy in an attempt to curtail Jones' accuracy throwing 30-plus yards down the field . MSU played a soft zone that took away some of those passing lanes, but Jones still connected with Smith for deep touchdown throws of 53, 35, 34 and 31 yards.Jones' longest passing play of the day against Kentucky was an intermediate route thrown to tight end Jahleel Billingsley on the first offensive snap of the day. The big shot plays weren't there on a night they clearly weren't necessary but shows how teams have learned from Alabama's early-season success. Jones also got away with a second-q uarter deep throw that should have been intercepted if not for a collision between Kentucky defenders that dislodged the would-be-turnover. The pass intercepted later was something Saban calls a "hope play where the quarterback throws it up and hopes his receiver comes down with it. "That's kind of on me," Jones said Monday. "When you have the people we have on our team and it's 1-on-1, I'm going to take the shot. Nine times it'll work and one time it won't, but I'll take those percentages." - Birmingha m News

Asked about how Mac Jones has changed since last year's Iron Bowl, when he threw two pick-sixes, Saban said, "I think he's got a lot more experience, he's got a lot more knowledge, he's a lot more confident. I think the improvement is pretty obvious to e verybody that watches the games. He's been very efficient in the way his decision-making, in terms of the things that he does. We've been very pleased with the progress that he's made. He's been able to play within himself, which I think is really, reall y important. I couldn't be more pleased with the progress that he's made." - Birmingham News

In case the sting of Mac Jones flipping his commitment from Kentucky to Alabama as a four-star recruit was not enough, he made sure Kentucky fans could feel that pain again with his performance Saturday. Jones, one of the leading contenders for the Heism an Trophy, completed 16 of 24 passes for 230 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. There were plenty of completions to wide-open receivers, but Jones also made a handful of the type of throws into tight coverage that have been missing from the Kent ucky passing game for most of the last decade. We will never know if Jones would have developed into the same caliber of quarterback had he stuck with his Kentucky commitment, but the performance offered a telling example of the type of talent still lack ing in Kentucky's quarterback room. For all of Terry Wilson's success at UK, he has not been able to elevate the Wildcat passing game. - Courier Journal

UA's passing attack is losing the SEC's previous leader in receiving yards, Jaylen Waddle, to his season-ending ankle injury, but replaced him capably with Slade Bolden, who caught six passes for 94 yards. Jones enters the game as the national leader in yards per attempt and completion percentage among those with more than one game and one of just 13 quarterbacks with at least 12 touchdown passes this season. He is also looking into his toughest challenge to date. "Mac's shown a lot of maturity in the w ay that he's played so far this year," UA coach Nick Saban said. "I think the more experience he gets, the more confidence that he has. We left some plays on the field, I think, on third down in the game that we certainly need to improve on and work on b ecause that's been something that's been a really positive thing for us. But Mac's been able to stay steady. He stays in a good place, keeps his eyes in the right place, keeps making good choices and decisions. I think that's when he's most productive, a nd he's done that on a very consistent basis all year long." - Montgomery Advertiser

No. 2 Alabama lost wide receiver Jaylen Waddle for the rest of the season on the opening kickoff. That was about the only thing that didn't go the Crimson Tide's way Saturday. Mac Jones threw for 387 yards and ran for a touchdown, and Najee Harris ran fo r three more TDs as Alabama routed Tennessee 48-17 for the 14th straight win in this rivalry. The Crimson Tide (5-0) outgained Tennessee 587-302. But playing the Vols proved costly for Alabama a second straight season. A year ago, Tua Tagovailoa hurt an ankle in the second quarter and missed the next game against Arkansas. On Saturday, Waddle rolled his right ankle as he was tackled on the opening kickoff. He was taken by cart to the locker room, and coach Nick Saban said at halftime that Waddle will be out the rest of the year and that the junior likely will need surgery. Tennessee (2-3) forced Alabama to punt on its opening drive. That was as close as the Vols would get in losing their seventh straight in this series in Neyland Stadium. Jones got the Tide moving on the second drive, distributing the ball to different receivers on the first four plays. Harris appeared to fumble on his first carry on the drive but was ruled down before the ball came out, which was upheld on review. Harris scored on th e next play. Jones capped the next drive with a 1-yard plunge and a 14-0 lead. Alabama led 28-10 at halftime. - AP College/Alabama Football

Alabama redshirt junior quarterback Mac Jones leads the nation in passing efficiency and is coming off three consecutive 400-yard performances entering this week's game at Tennessee. Kentucky completed more than 81% of its passes during last Saturday's 3 4-7 humbling of Tennessee inside Neyland Stadium, averaging 8.2 yards per completion. The Volunteers will face the nation's top statistical quarterback this week when No. 2 Alabama arrives along with Mac Jones. The 6-foot-3, 214-pound redshirt junior fro m Jacksonville, Florida, is completing 78.3% of his passes this season, with many of his attempts not nearly as conservative as what the Wildcats displayed.Jones is averaging a whopping 16.9 yards per completion, with his 12 touchdown tosses avera ging an eye-popping 37.3 yards. "Mac was the scout-team quarterback when I was the defensive coordinator there," Tennessee third-year head coach Jeremy Pruitt said this week. "When you look at how much he's improved in four years, it's really interesting . When he was a scout-team quarterback compared to four years later - it just shows you over time when you're in the same system you can continue to develop. He's really done a nice job doing that. "He came in last year and played well, and he's playing at a really high level right now with a lot of confidence." - Chattanooga Times Free Press

There is no such thing as a foregone conclusion in the wild world of college football, particularly this season in the world of COVID-19 where the unpredictable is predictable. Perceptions could change when the Big Ten and other conferences finally kick off starting this weekend. But for the moment, There's an air of inevitability developing around the notion that Clemson and Alabama are unstoppable forces again destined to square off for the national title and that the Heisman winner will be the quarte rback of one of those programs. Clemson's Trevor Lawrence continues to hold the lead in the weekly USA TODAY Network Heisman survey. He tossed five more TD passes last week as the Tigers routed Georgia Tech, though he did throw his first interception of the season. He has 15 scoring passes thus far in 2020 and a total of 1,544 yards.Alabama's Mac Jones was every bit as impressive in the Crimson Tide's win against Georgia in a top-five showdown. He moved 14 points closer to Lawrence in the survey and added three first-place votes to last week's total. Jones' first pass was picked off, as well, on his first attempt of the game, but he bounced back to add four TDs to his ledger, bringing his season total to 12 with 1,518 yards. Jones' teammate, run ning back Najee Harris, is also on the radar in fifth place with the most points among non-quarterbacks. - Montgomery Advertiser

Mac Jones' rise from little-known backup to Tua Tagovailoa last season to Heisman Trophy candidate this season reached a check point Saturday night against Georgia. Jones, whose statistics through three SEC games this season compared to those of Tagovail oa the past two seasons, still had something to prove. The fourth-year quarterback scorched Ole Miss' defense last week, completing 88 percent of his passes for 417 yards and two touchdowns. But the Rebels had allowed an FBS-worst 600 yards per game, a f ar cry from the nation's best defense that would test Jones under the lights in Bryant-Denny Stadium. Jones answered the call and continued to show the college football world he is a strength, not a liability, on a team that increasingly looks like it wi ll go only as far as its offense takes it this season.Alabama overcame another game of early defensive lapses to win, 41-24. Jones completed 24 of 32 passes for 417 yards and four touchdowns. Entering the game with the country's best passing effic iency rating, 220.3, Jones hardly skipped a beat in compiling a 219.5 rating against a Georgia defense that had given up the nation's third-lowest mark (99.0) before Saturday. "I think Mac did very well," Nick Saban said. "He stayed in a good place. He h ad his eyes in the right place, most of the time on most of the reads. He played really well." - Birmingham News

Mac Jones passed for 417 yards and four touchdowns and No. 2 Alabama's aerial assault picked apart No. 3 Georgia's heralded defense in the second half of a 41-24 victory Saturday night. The Crimson Tide (4-0), with coach Nick Saban stalking the sideline after a COVID-19 scare, rallied with three touchdowns in a 10-minute span starting late in the third quarter of a battle of the Southeastern Conference's last remaining unbeatens. The nation's top scoring offense ultimately got the decisive upper hand in a battle with the Bulldogs (3-1) and one of the nation's best defenses.Georgia had no answer for Jones and star receivers Jaylen Waddle and DeVonta Smith, especially with Alabama's own beleaguered defense grabbing two second-half interceptions an d three overall. Smith caught 11 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns, including one in the fourth quarter that effectively put it out of reach. Waddle caught a 90-yard touchdown pass and gained 161 yards on six catches. - Alabama/AP College Football

The only unknown surrounding Alabama's national title chances is how it would replace quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. It took Jones three games to prove that wouldn't be a problem. He's completing 79.5 percent of his passes for 1,101 yards and eight touchdow ns while only being sacked twice. So far his impressive wins are against No. 13 Texas A&M where he threw for four touchdowns and guiding the Crimson Tide through a shootout with Ole Miss. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Legends leave long shadows - something nobody needs to tell Mac Jones. Signing in the same class as Tua Tagovailoa before waiting his turn three seasons, Jones is still connected to the Miami Dolphins' first-round draft pick. "Yeah, but how does that com pare to Tua..." It remains an FAQ after Jones' hot start to his first season as the catalyst of Alabama's offense and there's easy way to draw parallels. The 2020 season is just so absurdly different from any previous years. Here we are in October starin g down a three-game, conference-only statistical sample size. But there are a few ways to measure these things with a healthy number of asterisks and caveats in play. Statistically, Jones' first three games stack up similarly to Tagovailoa's open to the 2019 season. Jones has 104 more passing yards on eight more attempts and a slightly better completion percentage. The beginning of the 2018 season had a different dynamic with Jalen Hurts sharing more of the load and Tagovailoa throwing 41 fewer passes i n three games compared to 2019. "Mac's doing a good job of taking the spot of 13," Alabama running back Najee Harris said Monday. "He's living up to everything." - Birmingham News

In his first three games as the full-time starter, Jones has struck the tricky balance of being both efficient and explosive. He completed 28 of his 32 passes against the Rebels, continuing a trend after completing nearly 75% of his passes against Missou ri and Texas A&M. Jones did not rack up that completion percentage on short and safe throws, averaging 13.03 yards per attempt for a total of 417 yards. Alabama's rushing attack drew scrutiny after two weeks, as it averaged 3.44 yards per carry over 64 a ttempts. It was better against the Rebels (Najee Harris ran for over 200 and cracked the top 10 in school history, Brian Robinson Jr. ran for over 75), but it may not need it at all points in time with the way Jones is performing at the moment. - Montgom ery Advertiser

If a No. 2 vs. No. 3 matchup can be a Game of the Century, this might be it. No. 2 Alabama hosts No. 3 Georgia on Saturday after the Crimson Tide and Bulldogs held their spots behind No. 1 Clemson in the latest AP Top 25. The Tigers received 59 first-pla ce votes, but don't be surprised if that changes dramatically after Georgia and Alabama square off. In college football history, the No. 1 vs. 2 regular-season matchups usually get the Game of the Century moniker. There have been 24 of those in the histo ry of the AP poll, dating to 1936, including LSU-Alabama last year. The 2-3 game has been even more rare. This will be the 17th in the regular season, not including conference championship games, and the first since Ohio State and Michigan played o ne in 2016. You might remember it for an overtime spot on a critical fourth down that went the Buckeyes way. Some of the other notable 2-3 games include: 1992 Miami-Florida State, aka Wide Right II; Colorado's breakthrough victory against Nebraska in 198 9; and Minnesota beating Michigan 7-6 on the way to the 1940 national championship in the first 2-3 game. - AP College Football

Mac Jones' career performance earned him another honor Tuesday morning. After being named SEC offensive player of the week Monday, the Alabama quarterback was announced as the Maxwell player of the week. The national honor is selected by the Maxwell Foot ball Club, the same group that presents the Maxwell Award to the nation's best college football player in December. Tua Tagovailoa was the Maxwell player of the week for his 2018 performance against Texas A&M, then again last year in a win at South Carol ina. He also won the Maxwell player of the year in 2018 when finishing second in the Heisman voting.Jones set career records with 435 yards and four touchdowns in Alabama's 52-24 win over Texas A&M. His 94.1 QBR was the second-best nationally amon g quarterbacks playing Saturday. "Well, Mac's matured," Nick Saban said Monday. "And that, I think there's a lot more confident now. I think he knows what he has to do to stay focused and play the next play. And he's, you know, he played within himself v ery well in the first two games and that's something that we want him to continue to do so I was pleased with the way he responded after the tip ball interception on Saturday." - Birmingham News
