  10/18/20 - QB *Mac JonesrJr/2021, Alabama

Mac Jones' rise from little-known backup to Tua Tagovailoa last season to Heisman Trophy candidate this season reached a check point Saturday night against Georgia. Jones, whose statistics through three SEC games this season compared to those of Tagovailoa the past two seasons, still had something to prove. The fourth-year quarterback scorched Ole Miss' defense last week, completing 88 percent of his passes for 417 yards and two touchdowns. But the Rebels had allowed an FBS-worst 600 yards per game, a far cry from the nation's best defense that would test Jones under the lights in Bryant-Denny Stadium. Jones answered the call and continued to show the college football world he is a strength, not a liability, on a team that increasingly looks like it will go only as far as its offense takes it this season.

Alabama overcame another game of early defensive lapses to win, 41-24. Jones completed 24 of 32 passes for 417 yards and four touchdowns. Entering the game with the country's best passing efficiency rating, 220.3, Jones hardly skipped a beat in compiling a 219.5 rating against a Georgia defense that had given up the nation's third-lowest mark (99.0) before Saturday. "I think Mac did very well," Nick Saban said. "He stayed in a good place. He had his eyes in the right place, most of the time on most of the reads. He played really well." - Birmingham News
