Joe Horitz, the Ravens' Director of Player Personnel referenced Wade when discussing how the front office evaluated players who opted out or came from conferences whose seasons started late. Both qualifiers applied to Wade. "Some guys went through some s truggle and we just watched how they competed," Horitz sad. "We know they might have been dealing with something this year - maybe not the same preparation in terms of getting ready for the season. "We watched the competition on film and went back to las t year's film, when they had more normal season and matched it up to see where they improved or what they did better that year. I think our scouts did a great job marrying the two years up and coming up with an opinion on the players."Wade was so good as Ohio State's slot cornerback in 2019 that it made him a 2020 consensus All-American despite his struggles after moving outside. DeCosta introduced Wade as a "nickel corner, slot corner." The expectation was that whatever team selected him would e ither move him back inside or possibly to safety. "Two years ago, he really excelled as one of the best corners in football," DeCosta said. Wade came back to Ohio State to build on that foundation. After the draft he listed all of the factors he believed contributed to his underwhelming performance - turf toe, a knee injury, deaths in the family. Yet he also acknowledged the disconnect between reputation and results - and the only remaining path forward. "I know what I can do," Wade said. "I know my sma rtness, my talent. Like everyone said, they know I have first-round talent and I know I have first-round talent. Right now it's just putting it on the field and doing it every day." - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Ohio State cornerback Shaun Wade might have been a first-round pick had he entered last year's NFL draft. A different fate awaited him this week. Wade waited until the draft's third day before he was selected with the No. 160 overall pick by the Baltimor e Ravens. Eight of his teammates heard their names called before Wade did on Saturday. While he remained on the board for a couple of days, Wade said he kept patience, knowing a team would eventually grab him. "It's just a blessing to be drafted and part of the one-percenters," Wade said. "That's what one of my coaches texted me, that you got to enjoy that moment that you're part of the one-percenters. This is everybody's dream to be drafted and only 32 go in the first round. So just being able to be dr afted is a blessing. I'm just excited." Wade's draft stock suffered from inconsistency last season as he switched positions from slot cornerback to outside cornerback. - Columbus Dispatch

Cornerback Shaun Wade will not work out in front of NFL scouts during Ohio State's pro day on Tuesday. His agent, Michael Perrett, said he is rehabbing a turf toe injury, postponing his workout until April 14. Wade suffered the injury during last fall's season with the Buckeyes, according to Perrett. Though he was named a consensus All-American and the Big Ten's defensive back of the year, Wade at times struggled in pass coverage in his transition from slot corner to outside corner. - Columbus Dispatch

Shaun Wade came back to Ohio State football in 2020 to make himself a more complete cornerback and help the Buckeyes win the national championship. Now he departs to join the impressive list of Buckeye alums in NFL secondaries. Wade announced Friday he w ill enter the 2020 NFL Draft, forging his final season of eligibility. Wade nearly entered last year's draft, and also at one point opted out prior to the 2020 season to begin draft preparations before reconsidering.Wade came back to Ohio State in part to make the transition from slot cornerback to outside. Regardless of his All-America credentials, that change did not go as smoothly as he or the Buckeyes had hoped. While he gained additional experience outside, Wade's role at the NFL level could range anywhere from cornerback - possibly back in the slot or as a nickel back - to safety. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Cornerback Shaun Wade left open the possibility for a return to Ohio State for a fifth season. Speaking with reporters following Monday night's loss to Alabama in the College Football Playoff championship game, Wade said he planned to mull a decision in the coming days. "I do want to come back and everything," Wade said. "I've got to talk to my parents. It is upsetting that we got here and we just didn't accomplish the goal. And that's just been my goal, winning a national championship and winning big g ames like this. I'll just go back with my parents, go talk to them and go from there." The deadline for underclassmen to enter the draft is Jan. 18, leaving Wade with less than a week to finalize his future plans. When asked if the final was his last gam e with the Buckeyes, he said, "I really can't say." Wade previously contemplated turning pro last January following his redshirt sophomore season and declared for the draft in September while Ohio State's season was in limbo. He opted back in once the se ason restarted. - Columbus Dispatch

One of the storylines of the first half of Ohio State football's season concerned alleged stars who were not playing up to elite reputations. You could include Shaun Wade in that mix. The junior cornerback twice decided to put off NFL Draft preparation t o return fo the 2020 season. His adjustment to the outside was just that - a period of adaptation that required new strategies, perspectives and physical skills. As the regular season concludes this week, Wade has begun to show he can be the playmaker Oh io State needs. He snagged his second interception in as many games in a 52-12 victory at Michigan State. He also collected four tackles and a pass breakup and shared OSU's Defensive Player of the Game honor with Haskell Garrett. Wade returned his first interception of the season for a touchdown against Indiana. That first career pick-six ultimately stood up as the deciding score in a 42-35 victory. A preseason All-American, Wade came into the season with four career interceptions - three of which came during his redshirt freshman season of 2018. He picked off one pass last season as the Buckeyes' starting slot cornerback. Yet he was disruptive in other ways, making key open-field tackles against the run or occasionally blitzing off the edge. - C leveland Plain Dealer

For the second straight game, the Buckeyes surrendered four second-half touchdowns. Two weeks ago against Rutgers, that could be largely chalked up as an aberration because Ohio State substituted liberally in that comfortable win. But the breakdowns agai nst Indiana can't be dismissed. Ty Fryfogle, the Big Ten's current Big Ten offensive player of the week, beat Wade in one-on-one coverage for one of his three second-half touchdowns. "On a couple, we had had blown coverages, and sometimes they just made a play," Wade said. "That's a part of playing football. Receivers are going to make plays, and DBs are going to make plays." Penix threw for 491 yards, including 294 in the second half."It's not just the secondary," Wade said. "It's the whole defe nse and the whole offense. In the second half. I don't know what it is. But we have to figure it out, especially in big games. We can't be giving up points like that in the second half and not scoring in the second half." Wade had tight coverage on the p ass Fryfogle caught on him. Wade was even called for pass interference on the play, though it just looked like normal tussling. But on Indiana's other second-half scores, there were clear breakdowns. David Ellis caught a 16-yard touchdown on a fourth-and -10 play in which linebacker Baron Browning said he and an unspecified safety had a miscommunication. "If we don't give up those big plays, you probably run away with this game," Day said. "But we did. You know, 491 yards passing, that's way too much. "W e've got to get it fixed." - Columbus Dispatch

Shaun Wade has played two games as an outside cornerback for the Ohio State football team, and the coaching staff is pleased with what it's seen. That's even with the three catches the former five-star recruit gave up to Penn State's Jahan Dotson in the Buckeyes' 38-25 win Saturday. Dotson made great plays on the ball, which can happen when you're covering an opposing team's best wide receiver. The bulk of his yards came on those three plays leading to a 144-yard, three-touchdown day on eight catches. " Dotson made some really good plays," OSU coach Ryan Day said. "On those two long ones, I thought Shaun was right there. The kid just made two remarkable catches. That's part of playing corner. They're going to make some catches on you."Overall, I thought the first two games they played well. There's some things, maybe, in the last game they'd like to have back, but overall we're getting solid play out of them. If they keep growing and keep working in those spots and keep covering like that, they' re going to get some balls." Defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs saw Saturday's win as a learning experience for a secondary that doesn't have a ton of experience. That took another hit when Cameron Brown went down with a season-ending torn Achilles. Coom bs is happy with what Wade and Sevyn Banks have done up to this point. Playing cornerback means having a short memory, especially after a wide receiver makes a good play. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

The week began with a declaration for the NFL, an intention to leave Ohio State in order to prepare for next year's draft as uncertainty lingered over a football season this fall in the Big Ten. But by Thursday, capping a whirlwind series of developments , star cornerback Shaun Wade had a change in plans. Appearing during an evening edition of ESPN's "SportsCenter," he announced he would opt back in for the 2020 season, which had been reinstated the previous day with a late October start date. "I'm going to come back and be a Buckeye," Wade said during the telecast. Wade told The Dispatch earlier this week that he had not signed with an agent, preserving his eligibility and allowing him to return for his fourth season with the Buckeyes. It didn't take m uch for him to reconsider a return. "They didn't cancel football," Wade said. "Now it's back. Since it's back, we got a chance to win a national championship. That's been my goal since day one. That's what we strive for, and that's what we're going to st rive for when we get back in October." His return is a significant boost for Ohio State's title chances. Wade is the lone returning starter in the secondary, which must recover from the departure of two first-round cornerbacks in Damon Arnette and Jeff O kudah. - Columbus Dispatch

Another Ohio State football star announced he will not play this fall, regardless of what the Big Ten Conference decides in the coming days. Buckeyes cornerback Shaun Wade announced Monday morning that he will forego his remaining eligibility and declare for the 2021 NFL Draft. He joins offensive lineman Wyatt Davis as Buckeyes choosing not to play. Players who make such announcements but do not compromise their NCAA eligibility are free to return to their teams. Wade’s father, Randy, has been a vocal leader of the push for the Big Ten to play this fall. However, he said all along that push was for the Buckeyes' seniors and other players more than for his son. The Big Ten is tapping the brakes on football practice, telling its schools that until further notice full contact practices cannot begin. The conference announced all teams will remain in the first two days of what is known as the "acclimatization perio d," working in just helmets helmets. The Big Ten said all other fall sports will continue to work with team physicians and athletic trainers to adjust practices to the appropriate level of activity. "We understand there are many questions regarding how t his impacts schedules, as well as the feasibility of proceeding forward with the season at all," the conference said in a statement Saturday. As each Ohio State player comes off the board over the three days of the NFL draft, the Buckeyes' already shiny recruiting brochure gets glossier. Like travel agents advertising a tropical vacation package, OSU coaches have the ability to pitch an irresi stible offer: "Want to someday visit a professional football paradise? Play in the Horseshoe, and all your NFL dreams can come true." Even if not all 16 draft-eligible Buckeyes get selected, the overall numbers still scream louder than over-caffeinated K erry Coombs. Ohio State entered the draft tied with Southern California for the most first-round picks with 81. That's a ton of talent coming out of Columbus, from Orlando Pace to Chase Young. And coaches unabashedly sell that success."Does the NF L come up (during recruiting)? Absolutely. That is part of it," Ohio State running backs coach Tony Alford said. "It's not the main part of it for me, but we definitely have had success at our position, and all positions." I always roll my eyes at purist s who criticize colleges for luring high school players with the bait of an NFL career. The main point of college is career preparation. Football recruiting is no different from academic admissions in art or engineering. Go after the best by promoting a profitable future. "I'm not interested in being around anybody who doesn't want to be the absolute best in the world at what they do," said Coombs, who serves as defensive coordinator in his second stint at Ohio State. "The measuring stick for us in this profession is to be chosen by the group at the next level at being the best at what you do. That's what a first-round draft pick represents." - Columbus Dispatch

You will never convince some Ohio State football fans that Shaun Wade should have been flagged for targeting against Clemson in the 2019 Fiesta Bowl. The best the NCAA can do to assuage the Buckeyes' anger is make sure no players have to perform what OSU coach Ryan Day called the "walk of shame." The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel on Tuesday approved a rule change allowing players who are ejected for targeting to remain with their team on the sideline. Since the rule was instituted in 2013, disquali fied players had to leave the field and go to the locker room for the remainder of the game. All other aspects of the targeting rule remain the same. That means Wade still would have been lost for the game for his second-quarter hit on Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence. But he could have watched the second half from the sideline with the rest of his team. The panel also did not alter the progressive penalty for targeting. Players who commit three in the same season face a one-game suspension. - Clevela nd Plain Dealer

Four assistant football coaches at Ohio State will be paid at least $1 million this year, according to salary figures released by the school Monday. That will mark the first time four assistants on one staff have made seven figures, according to the USA Today database of coach's salaries. Ohio State cornerback Shaun Wade has been ejected for targeting, leaving the second-ranked Buckeyes without a key defensive player against No. 2 Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl. Wade was ejected late in the second quarter Saturday night for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Lawrence laid on the field and had to be attended by trainers after Wade's hit and another hit that twisted his left knee. He returned for the next series.
