Fourteen years after Marlon Davidson started lifting couches to try to get stronger, his efforts paid off when the Atlanta Falcons called his name. Even at seven, Davidson had known that if he wanted football to be his way out, he had to work at it. The Falcon's recognized that dedication and used their second-round pick to make him the 47th pick of the 2020 NFL Draft on Friday. When he received the call, Davidson became the third Auburn player to be picked, behind No. 7 Derrick Brown, who went to the C arolina Panthers, and cornerback Noah Igbinoghene who was picked 27th by the Miami Dolphins on Thursday. He's the second Auburn defensive lineman, behind Brown, to be picked and joins six Auburn defensive linemen who have been drafted since 2015. H e is the second defensive end since Carl Lawson was picked in the fourth round by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2017. Davidson was the third defensive end to go in this year's draft. Chase Young went to Washington Redskins with the second pick and Yetur Gros s-Matos was picked by the Panthers in the second round. However, the numbers aren't that important to Davidson. "My expectation is to be picked," Davidson said before the draft. "I don't care what round I go. I don't care what pick I'll go long as I go." - Birmingham News

The 6-foot-3, 296-pounder has a wealth of experience, starting since the first game of his freshman year in 2016. After leaving some plays on the field during his first few seasons, Davidson put it all together as a senior and was a force up front for th e Tigers. He totaled 48 tackles, including a team-leading 12.5 for a loss and 7.5 sacks to go along with five quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles - both on strip-sacks - and a pass breakup while earning All-SEC recognition and picking up a pair of se cond-team All-America honors. He also boosted his stock in the process while shining alongside future top-10 pick Derrick Brown.Davidson has been bent on proving he's worthy of being a first-round pick, like Brown, and he hoped to show that off to teams both at the NFL Combine and earlier this month at Auburn's pro day. At the Combine, he ran a 5.04 in the 40-yard dash and showed a willingness and ability to play both inside and out along the line-something he also displayed during his pro day on the Plains while dealing with a minor hamstring tweak. "Everybody wants to prove somebody wrong," Davidson said. "I'm trying to prove that I'm the best player in the world. I'm trying to prove people wrong every day….I wanted to show these people that I'm real. I wanted to show these people that I have the passion for the game, and I will play through anything to have this opportunity." - Birmingham News

Derrick Brown and Marlon Davidson came to Auburn together, shared an apartment and each decided to return for their senior seasons. Now, the Auburn defensive linemen are both hoping to land in the first round of the NFL draft. They were among the Tigers going through a pro day workout before NFL scouts and coaches on Friday. Brown has been projected by some as a potential early first-rounder while some mock drafts have Davidson as possibly going late in the round as well. Both had big senior seasons aft er considering early entry into the draft. "They both improved," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. "You're talking about some high-character guys who played at a high level in the SEC. They were dominant. They weren't just good players. They were dominant p layers. "They both performed very well. They both have that wow factor." Both linemen just did position drills at pro day after going through the NFL combine in Indianapolis. - AP College Football
