  WEEK 1 FCS NATIONAL TEAM OF THE WEEK: West Georgia (38-29 win over Samford),...In its first game on the Division I level, West Georgia stunned Samford, the 2022 Southern Conference champ and an FCS quarterfinalist. The win also was coach Joel Taylor's first with the UAC program. The Wolves meant business from the start with a 71-yard flea-flicker on the game's first play from scrimmage. Quarterback Davin Wydner accounted for 329 yards of total offense and three touchdowns.   Davin Wydner passed for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead West Georgia to a 38-29 win over Samford in the Wolves' Division-I debut on Saturday. West Georgia left Division II for the FCS this season and gave new coach Joel Taylor the victory. Wydner, an Ole Miss transfer on a West Georgia team with more than 60 newcomers, was 24-of-35 passing for 271 yards and ran for 58 more. Karmello English had six catches for a 108 yards and Chase Belcher rushed for a pair of scores. The Wolves retook the lead at 32-29 on a 4-yard Belcher run that came after Malachi Williams punched the ball loose and West Georgia recovered at the Samford 30-yard line.

On the Wolves' next possession, Wydner scrambled 21 yards to make it 38-29 with eight minutes left. Wydner threw a 44-yard Hail Mary to Dylan Gary on the final play of the first half for a 26-14 lead. The Wolves stayed on top until a scrambling Quincy Crittendon found Brendan Jenkins deep for a 68-yard score with six minutes remaining in the third quarter. A two-point conversion gave Samford a 29-26 edge. Crittendon was 24-of-41 passing for 302 yards with two touchdowns and an interception while running for 95 yards and two more scores for the Bulldogs. - AP College Football

  Dazalin Worsham is heading home to finish out his college career. The former Hewitt-Trussville standout, who spent last season at Auburn, announced Tuesday night that he has transferred to UAB to play for Trent Dilfer's program. UAB will be the third school in four years for Worsham, a former three-star prospect who spent his first two seasons in Miami before transferring to Auburn last summer. Worsham is a 6-foot-1, 177-pound Birmingham native who was an Under Armour All-American at Hewitt-Trussville, where he became one of the most prolific wide receivers in Alabama high school football history.

Worsham, a graduate of Hewitt-Trussville, is a former Under Armour All-American and one of the most prolific wide receivers in Alabama high school history. He finished his prep career as Hewitt-Trussville's all-time leading receiver and eighth all-time in receptions in the state, with 215 receptions for more than 2,400 yards and 28 touchdowns during his varsity career. As a senior, he had 54 catches for 427 yards and six touchdowns while earning second-team Class 7A All-State honors. - Birmingham News

The Kennesaw native threw for 3,112 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2022, including four games of at least 330 yards and one over 500 yards. The Phenix City, Alabama native rushed for 1,012 yards on the season which was second in the GSC, but Carson led the league and set a UWG single-season record with 20 rushing touchdowns. His rushing touchdown total was also good for fourth in all of Division II and fifth across all divisions of NCAA football. Carson had five 100-plus yard games and four games with three touchdowns.   It's another homecoming for an Auburn transfer. Dazalin Worsham, one of the best receivers in Hewitt-Trussville High history, announced his transfer to the Tigers on Wednesday night. A third-year shirt freshman, he'll have four years of eligibility remaining. He finished with 28 touchdowns and over 2,300 receiving yards in his high school career. In 2018, Worsham committed to Alabama before switching to the Hurricanes as a senior. Then-Miami coach Manny Diaz was a major part of Worsham's recruitment. 247Sports Composite rankings listed Worsham as a four-star and the 10-ranked player in the state. - Birmingham News

  Four Georgia Southern football players have been suspended from the team following their arrests by the Statesboro Police Department on Monday and Tuesday on drug-related charges. "Georgia Southern football players Chris Harris Jr., Wesley Kennedy III, Ephraim Kitchen Jr. and CJ Wright have been suspended indefinitely for violations of athletics department policies," the athletic department announced late Tuesday afternoon in a statement. "There will be no further comment on the matter at this time."

On Tuesday, Harris, a senior inside linebacker from Savannah, was arrested on one charge of possession of a controlled substance, a felony, according to Bulloch County Jail records. Kitchen, a sixth-year cornerback from Batesville, Mississippi, was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of possession of less than 1 ounce of marijuana, according to jail records. Bond was set for $2,000 for Kitchen, and $7,500 for Harris. Kitchen was released bond on bond on Tuesday, and Harris was released on bond later Tuesday. - Savannah Morning News

  Two starting Georgia Southern football players were arrested in Statesboro on Monday on multiple drug charges and one weapons charge. Senior running back Wesley Kennedy III of Savannah was arrested and charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance, one count of possession of marijuana of less than 1 ounce, three counts of possession of drug-related objects and one count of possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies, according to Bulloch County Jail records.

Wright was arrested and charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance, one count of possession of marijuana of less than 1 ounce, and two counts of possession of drug-related objects, according to jail records.   Five offense players/return specialists who combined for 12 touchdowns, including four scores that were game-winners, have made the Paul Hornung Award Weekly Honor roll. Georgia Southern senior running back Kennedy touched the ball 15 times three different ways and scored twice, including the game-winner, in the Eagles' come-from-behind 24-17 win at home over South Alabama.   Wesley Kennedy III had 91 yards rushing and two fourth-quarter touchdowns, Derrick Canteen broke up a fourth-down pass in the end zone with 1:01 left and Georgia Southern held off South Alabama 24-17 on Thursday night.
