Villanova, which went 10-3 overall last season and earned a share of the CAA Football championship for the first time since 2012, has been picked to capture the CAA Football title again in 2022 according to a vote of the league's head coaches and media relations directors. The Wildcats got 16 first-place votes and 270 points in the poll, topping rival Delaware, which received seven first-place votes and finished second with 235 points. Rhode Island placed third with 224 points and Richmond was close behind in fourth with 219 points. William & Mary, which picked up two first-place votes, and Elon, which received one first-place vote, finished fifth and sixth respectively in the poll. Stony Brook placed seventh followed by Maine, New Hampshire, Monmouth, Towson, UAlbany and Hampton.

Villanova returns many of its top offensive performers from last year's team that advanced to the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs for the first time since 2014 and was ranked No. 8 nationally. Back for the Wildcats are receivers Rayjoun Pringle and Jaaron Hayek, who combined for 17 touchdown catches, running backs Jalen Jackson and DeeWil Barlee, and All-America offensive lineman Michael Corbi.   Justin Covington ran for two second-quarter touchdowns and Villanova held off Holy Cross 21-16 in the second round of the FCS playoffs on Friday night. Villanova (10-2), ranked sixth in the latest FCS coaches poll, took the lead early in second quarter after an interception by Ethan Potter gave the Wildcats the ball at the Holy Cross 43-yard line. Jalen Jackson ran for 10 yards, then caught a pass from Daniel Smith for a 30-yard gain to the Crusaders' 3. Covington had a 2-yard TD run on fourth down for a 7-0 lead at the 11:20 mark. The Wildcats stretched their lead to 14-0 with a 10-play, 79-yard drive that ended with Covington's 7-yard TD run. Smith set up Covington's scoring run with a 24-yard completion to Qadir Ismail on third-and-14 on the previous play.

No. 24 Holy Cross (10-3) pulled within 14-10 in the third quarter. The Crusaders took the opening kickoff and marched 68 yards in 12 plays, ending with Jordan Fuller's 7-yard TD toss to Sean Morris to make it 14-7. Frankie Monte forced a fumble by TD Ayo-Durojaiye on the ensuing kickoff, Terrence Spence recovered and Holy Cross took possession at the Wildcats' 25. Derek Ng kicked a 22-yard field goal after the drive stalled at the 3. Ayo-Durojaiye answered with a 55-yard kick return to the Crusaders' 37 and three plays later Jackson scored on a 14-yard run for a 21-10 Villanova lead. - Villanova/AP College Football

2021 ALL-CAA FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM (COACHES): Christian Benford, Villanova, CB, Sr.,...Benford is a first team All-CAA selection for the second straight season and an all-conference choice for the third time in his career. The former CAA Football Defensive Rookie of the Year (2018) has developed into one of the top playmakers in the entire country and is leading all FCS players in passes defended this season while ranking second nationally in interceptions.

Benford is averaging 2.1 passes defended per game with seven interceptions and 16 pass breakups. His seven interceptions are tied for the third most in a single season in school history and he scored his first career touchdown on a 19-yard return versus Bucknell earlier in the year. Benford has defended two or more passes seven times in 11 outings on the year and he leads the CAA in both interceptions and pass breakups.   2021 ALL-CAA FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM (COACHES): Forrest Rhyne, Villanova, LB, Gr.,...The career-high 20 tackles Rhyne made at James Madison are the sixth-most in a game by an FCS player this season. Rhyne is the only CAA player with 19 or more tackles in a game on the year and he has achieved the feat twice with the 20 stops at JMU and 19 tackles versus William & Mary. There is no official school record for tackles in a game, but Rhyne's 20 are the most that any player is known to have had based on available data going back approximately the last 20 years. Rhyne is now a three-time honoree on the CAA First Team Defense. Among his accolades for the year are being the Wildcats top tackler on rushing plays. Rhyne has made 96 of his 112 tackles against the run this season for a Villanova defense which ranks second in the CAA and 10th nationally with an average of 93.7 rushing yards allowed per game. - Villanova Football
