Joseph Bulovas knows the pressure that comes with kicking an important field goal at perennial title contender Alabama. This one carried a lot of weight, too, for his Vandy teammates. To jumpstart a program starved for a long-time-in-the-making win. The graduate transfer connected on a 38-yard field goal with 19 seconds remaining, Ken Seals accounted for three scores and Vanderbilt beat Colorado State 24-21 on Saturday night to snap an 11-game losing streak.

Seals drove the Commodores into field-goal range with help from a pass-interference penalty and a targeting call. Bulovas jumped up in excitement after making the kick, hugging his holder. His teammates soon joined in once the final horn sounded. "The guys in the locker room sure deserve it," said Bulovas, who converted 22 of 29 field goals while with Alabama from 2017-20. "They wrote the letter. I just sealed the envelope." Seals threw two TD passes and ran in another for the Commodores (1-1), who earned their first win under new coach Clark Lea. It was Vanderbilt's first victory since knocking off East Tennessee State 38-0 on Nov. 23, 2019. The Commodores were coming off a loss to ETSU, an FCS team, last week. "The belief on that sideline was the difference tonight...It has to do with Vanderbilt football discovering itself," Lea said. - Vanderbilt/AP College Football

First-year coach Clark Lea announced Tuesday that Vanderbilt football had elected its captains for 2021. The primary captains will be junior defensive lineman Daevion Davis and senior linebacker Elijah McAllister. Those two were the captains voted on by the players, but Lea will also have a "leadership council" of players that will also be called upon. The leadership council consists of sophomore tackle Bradley Ashmore, senior safety Dashaun Jerkins, senior wide receiver Cam Johnson, junior linebacker Anfernee Orji, sophomore quarterback Ken Seals, senior punter Harrison Smith, senior center Michael Warden and sophomore quarterback Mike Wright. According to Lea, the leadership council will "help me continue to grow this program, help us continue to grow this program to its potential." - Tennessean

Vanderbilt football coach Clark Lea will make his SEC Media Days debut on July 21, and he will be accompanied by sophomore offensive lineman Bradley Ashmore and junior defensive lineman Daevion Davis. Ashmore is set to begin the season as the starting right tackle, while Davis notched 19 tackles and forced a fumble in limited playing time last season. The Commodores finished with their worst record in school history last year, failing to win a game against only SEC opponents, resulting in an 0-9 season. Coach Derek Mason was fired after seven seasons. - Tennessean

Two-sport LSU athlete Maurice Hampton has entered the NCAA transfer portal, head baseball coach Paul Mainieri confirmed Thursday, a decision that comes months after the promising player considered quitting football and dedicating his time to one sport. The 6-foot, 215-pound Tennessee native started in five games at safety for the LSU football team in 2020, and he played in five games so far this season as a reserve outfielder on the baseball team. He left the baseball team Thursday. "I was caught off guard by his decision today," Mainieri said, "but I can't say I was totally surprised." Mainieri said Hampton told him in December he intended not to play football anymore. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Dayo Odeyingbo, the senior standout defensive end, has opted out of the remaining two games, 247Sports.com reported. He is not on the depth chart, and Odeyingbo's mother confirmed his decision in a Twitter thread. That means Vanderbilt's best defensive player won't face the Vols. Odeyingbo leads the team with nine quarterback hurries, eight tackles-for-loss and 5 1/2 sacks. He is headed to the Senior Bowl and, presumably, the NFL Draft. - Tennessean

LSU safety Mo Hampton, who has missed the team's last two games, will be available to play against Alabama, coach Ed Orgeron told reporters Wednesday morning. The 6-foot-, 215-pound sophomore started at safety in LSU's first four games, played sparingly against Auburn, then did not play against Arkansas and Texas A&M. "He's available this week and ready to go," Orgeron said during the Southeastern Conference weekly teleconference. Hampton, who also plays baseball at LSU, turned down a $1.8 million signing bonus in the MLB Draft to explore a collegiate career that included playing football for the Tigers. - Baton Rouge Advocate
