Frank Peasant's 30-yard touchdown jaunt with 16 seconds left helped carry Middle Tennessee State past Tennessee Tech 32-25 in a season opener on Saturday night. The game didn't end until 1:18 a.m. EST due to weather delays. The Blue Raiders led 21-5 at halftime before the Golden Eagles scored three touchdowns and took a 25-24 lead when reserve quarterback Jordyn Potts threw a pair of touchdowns in the game's final minutes. Potts relieved injured starter Dylan Laible who departed in the first quarter.

Potts threw a 15-yarder to Ashton Maples capping an eight-play, 82-yard drive with 4:21 left. The Golden Eagles' defense forced a three-and-out, and Potts this time led a six-play, 57-yard drive resulting in a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Yates with 1:06 left. MTSU countered when quarterback Nicholas Vattiato connected on pass plays of 14 and 26 yards to Omari Kelly. The 26-yarder occurred on fourth-and-5 at the Blue Raiders' 44-yard line. The play set up Peasant's game-scoring dash. Peasant ran for 49 yards and two touchdowns. His 3-yard plunge with 6:56 left in the first was the game's first score. - AP College Football

Jack Turner and Blake Baker each threw a touchdown pass to help Louisiana Tech beat Nicholls 25-17 on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams. Baker and Turner were a combined 16-of-32 passing for 277 yards with three interceptions. Turner gave the Bulldogs a 9-7 advantage with a 28-yard touchdown pass to Solo Lewis with 10:14 to play in the first quarter. Baker stretched the lead to 15-7 with a 14-yard scoring throw to Marlion Jackson midway through the second quarter.

Jimmy Holiday capped a 71-yard drive with a 6-yard touchdown run to give the Bulldogs a 25-10 lead with 7:12 left in the game. Louisiana Tech held Nicholls to just 200 yards of offense and forced a safety in the first quarter. Rasheed Lovelace returned a Turner pass attempt 25 yards into the end zone in the first quarter for Nicholls. Pat McQuaide threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Quincy Brown for the Colonels to cap the scoring with 2:17 to play. - AP College Football

Freshman Ahmad Hardy ran for 103 yards and a touchdown, UL Monroe scored the game's final 16 points and the Warhawks defeated FCS-member Jackson State 30-14 in a season opener on Thursday night. The game marked the ULM debut of Bryant Vincent as coach. The Warhawks went ahead 14-7 in the final minute of the second quarter when Hardy scored on a 1-yard run. The nine-play, 42-yard drive began after an interception by Wydett Williams Jr. and included a fourth-down conversion by Hardy inside the 5-yard line.

Jackson State tied it at 14 on a 3-yard run by Jacobian Morgan early in the third quarter but the Warhawks finished the game with a 22-yard touchdown run by James Jones, a field goal, and a 28-yard TD pass from Aidan Armenta to Javon Cambell. It was backup quarterback Armenta's only pass of the game. Oklahoma transfer General Booty completed 10 of 14 passes for 104 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game. 2023 NEC OFFENSIVE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: WR Jaylen Bonelli, Wagner, Fr,...Bonelli compiled the fourth-most receiving yards on the circuit in his first season at Wagner. After the speedy 5-foot-10 wideout combined for four catches in Wagner's first three games, he went on to make three-or-more receptions in seven of the Seahawks' final eight contests. He was Wagner's most targeted receiver and he ranked in the loop's top-five with 40 catches, 627 yards and 57.0 receiving yards per game. A native of Cooper City, FL, Bonelli did most of his damage once the slate turned to conference play. All four of his touchdowns came during that seven-game stretch, including a two-score performance in a 28-17 win over Stonehill on Oct. 28.

In NEC games, Bonelli was second in receptions (30), second in touchdowns, third in receiving yards (448) and third in receiving yards per game (64.0). Midway through the season, he became the first Wagner rookie since Joe Kinard 2004 to rack up 100-plus receiving yards in a game with a 104-yard performance against Saint Francis U (Oct. 12). One week later, he accomplished the feat once again and bested that performance by racking up 128 yards against Central Connecticut on Oct. 21. Two months after joining Washington State's football team, Isaiah Paul is heading back to the portal. The senior linebacker, who signed with WSU in early January, announced Wednesday over Twitter that he plans to reenter the NCAA transfer portal in May. Paul spent the past five years at Incarnate Word. The 6-foot-2, 230-pounder was a three-year starter at the FCS program in San Antonio - though injuries derailed his 2022 campaign. Paul recorded 137 tackles and 20 1/2 tackles for loss between 2019-22.

Paul was expected to compete for a significant playing role at WSU in 2023. The Cougars also added transfer LBs Devin Richardson (Texas) and Ahmad McCullough (Maryland). Those two will be in the mix for starting jobs along with WSU veteran Kyle Thornton and redshirt freshman Hudson Cedarland - one of the prized recruits in WSU's 2022 class. - Spokesman-Review

The attorney for a Georgia wide receiver who transferred from Mississippi State reached an agreement with the District Attorney's office to resolve the charges against him from Jan. 23 for an incident with a female in a UGA dorm. Rodarius "Rara" Thomas is entering a pretrial diversion program to resolve the misdemeanor charge of battery/family violence and a felony charge of false imprisonment was dismissed, attorney Kim Stephens said.

A tentative agreement has been in place for about a month, but it was finally signed on Friday, Stephens said. Police alleged Thomas stood in front of a dorm room door, blocking the exit and telling the female she could not leave, but Stephens said it was dropped primarily because there wasn't enough evidence to support that. The battery charge was for bruising the alleged victim's bicep and causing abrasions to her shin. Thomas will serve 40 hours of community service, complete an anger management class he already started and pay a $500 program fee. - Athens Daily Banner

Memphis football defensive back Ladarian Paulk became the latest starter to leave the program when he announced Sunday that he'll enter the transfer portal in May. The NCAA's spring transfer portal window opens from May 1-15. Paulk is not listed on the team's spring roster, so he's eligible to remain a student at Memphis before his departure.

Paulk played in nine games with eight starts at safety and had 28 tackles with one pass deflection in his lone season with the Tigers. He transferred before last season from Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College and has two years of eligibility remaining. With Paulk gone, the Tigers' secondary loses another player with experience. Sylvonta Oliver and Quindell Johnson both exhausted their eligibility after last season. That whistling in the 35 mph wind was Joey Yellen whipping another pass to a University of Hawaii receiver at the Ching Complex's football field. Six months after transferring from Pittsburgh and four months after ceding the starting quarterback's job, Yellen has impressed in the first four practices of the Rainbow Warriors' spring training. Head coach Timmy Chang has likened Yellen to Nick Rolovich, who rebounded from a difficult 2000 season to set several UH passing records in 2001.

"Rolo was one of the best quarterbacks who played here," Chang said of his former teammate. "If Rolo had another two years, three years or so, imagine what he would have done with this offense. I see Joey in (Rolovich). It's his frame (6 feet 3, 215 pounds). It's his demeanor. It's his ability to throw the ball, understand where the ball needs to go on time. He's not going to wow you with his athleticism, but he's going to distribute the ball, and that's what reminds me the most of Rolo." Brayden Schager is atop the six-quarterback depth chart this spring. But Chang, who will call the offensive plays this season, said there is talent - and competition - in the quarterback room. "Schager gets the No. 1 spot, but Joey's right there," Chang said. "He's competing. He's throwing the ball right underneath the chin (of a receiver). The University of Hawaii football team is set to upgrade its offense with Monday's first of 15 spring practices. Last year's spring training, the first under head coach Timmy Chang, was intended to promote unity following a tumultuous end to the 2021 season. This year's aim is to fully implement the run-and-shoot offense that was prolific for 13 UH seasons through 2011 and found revived success in 2018 and 2019. The Warriors used a mashup of schemes last season. Chang and co-offensive coordinators Ian Shoemaker and Roman Sapolu will craft the game plan in meetings and practices each week during the season. But Chang, a record-setting, run-and-shoot quarterback at UH and Saint Louis School, will call the offensive plays during games.

Brayden Schager enters spring training as the No. 1 quarterback. When the Warriors began introducing elements of the run-and-shoot in last season's fifth game, Schager "started making some great throws," according to Chang. "He's gotten better. Schager throws the ball hard. Schager knows the drops. He's been good." Chang said Joey Yellen, who transferred from Pittsburgh last summer, "reminds me of (Nick) Rolovich 100%." In 2020, Chang joined the Warriors as a freshman and Rolovich transferred from City College of San Francisco. From an initial nine-quarterback field, Rolovich won the starting job. But after two uneven games, Rolovich was replaced by Chang. The next season, following an injury to Chang, Rolovich had a record-setting season. Against Miami (Ohio) and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, Rolovich threw for 500 yards and seven touchdowns. Similar to Rolovich, according to Chang, Yellen has "that intelligence. The Bowling Green football program has added two transfers in Arizona State offensive line transfer Armon Bethea and Ventura College wide receiver transfer Bo Tate, according to head football coach Scot Loeffler. The 6-foot-5, 285-pound Bethea will have three years of eligibility with the Falcons. Bethea (Brooklyn, New York) spent two years at Arizona State. He played in two games in 2021 as a true freshman on the defensive line after making a transition to help with depth. He returned to the offensive line in 2022. Bethea was a consensus top-5 overall prospect in New York out of Erasmus Hall High School where he was teammates with current BGSU offensive tackle Tunde Fatukasi.

Primarily used as a left guard as a junior at Erasmus, Bethea helped lead the Dutchmen to the New York Public Schools Athletic League City Conference championship. He also played in the All-American Bowl after his senior year. At Erasmus, he was invited to the All-American Bowl as one of the top players in the class, where he previously committed to Arizona State on a national broadcast Bethea attended the same high school as a bevy of celebrities and sports figures like the Commanders' Curtis Samuel, actresses Barbara Streisand and Mae West to Pro Football Hall of Famers Al Davis and Sid Luckman. - Sentinel Tribune

Florida added another piece to its offensive line build on Wednesday, signing former Kentucky offensive lineman Kiyaunta Goodwin from the transfer portal. The 6-foot-8, 351-pound Goodwin was a top 40 national recruit and the top-rated player in Indiana per 247Sports composite coming out of Charlestown High School in Charlestown, Ind. in 2021. A wide receiver who recently transferred to national champion Georgia from Mississippi State was arrested Monday on felony and misdemeanor charges. Rodarius "Rara" Thomas was booked at around 4 a.m. on a felony charge of false imprisonment and a misdemeanor count of family violence battery, according to Clarke County jail records. He spent more than eight hours in jail before being released on $1,850 bond shortly after noon. Jail records showed the 20-year-old Thomas was arrested by University of Georgia police. No other details were immediately available, and it was not known if Thomas had an attorney who could speak for him. "We are aware of a reported incident involving conduct by one of our student-athletes," the Georgia athletic department said in a statement. "While we are limited in what we can say about the incident, the report is disappointing and not reflective of the high standards we have for our student-athletes on and off the field." The arrest of Thomas was another blow to a Georgia team that won its second second straight national championship with a 65-7 rout of TCU on Jan. 9.

A few hours after a celebratory parade through Athens and a ceremony at Sanford Stadium, offensive lineman Devin Willock and a member of the recruiting staff were killed in an early morning car wreck on Jan. 15. Excessive speed has been cited as one of the causes of the crash, which remains under investigation. Thomas, who is from Eufaula, Alabama, was one of Mississippi State’s leading receivers this past season, with 44 catches for a team-high 626 yards and seven touchdowns. North Texas continued to add experienced players to its roster heading into Eric Morris' debut season as the Mean Green's coach on Tuesday, when former Texas Tech wide receiver Trey Cleveland committed to UNT. Cleveland announced his decision on his Twitter account. Cleveland caught 22 passes for 344 yards as a junior at Texas Tech last season. He entered the portal as a graduate transfer late last week. Cleveland has two seasons of eligibility remaining. The former Arlington High standout was a three-star prospect in the Class of 2019. He committed to Texas Tech over an offer from Southern Illinois. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound former Red Raider contributed throughout his time at Texas Tech. He caught eight passes in 2020 and 11 in 2021 before breaking out last season. - Denton Record
