  12/06/25 - Ben RobertsrJr/2027, Texas Tech, 6-3, 240 (DS#13 ILB) + More +

Cameron Dickey scored right after the first of linebacker Ben Roberts' two interceptions in the second half as No. 5 Texas Tech won the Big 12 championship game, and almost certainly locked up a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff, with a 34-7 victory over 11th-ranked BYU on Saturday. After investing millions of dollars in the transfer portal, the Red Raiders (12-1, No. 4 CFP) have their first Big 12 title - they are one of only six schools that have been part of all 30 Big 12 seasons. They are also going to the CFP for the first time, though their win likely prevented the Big 12 from getting a second team in the playoff. Behren Morton, who didn't play in Tech's only loss at Arizona State, threw two TDs to Cody Eakin and Stone Harrington kicked four field goals for the Red Raiders. The only losses by BYU (11-2, No. 11 CFP) are to the Red Raiders, including 29-7 in Lubbock four weeks ago before four turnovers in the second half this time. The Cougars will fall out of the top 12 instead of moving up when the new CFP rankings come out Sunday. They likely needed to be in the top 10 for a playoff spot.

Roberts, one of the holdovers on the Tech defense along with fellow linebacker Jacob Rodriguez (13 tackles), got his first interception with about 3 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter when he reached up and deflected the pass by true freshman Bear Bachmeier. On the next play, Dickey took a direct snap and ran untouched 11 yards for a touchdown and 21-7 lead after making the 2-point conversion. Harrington, who kicked a school-record five field goals against BYU last month, missed a 49-yard field goal attempt after Roberts jumped a route to make a one-handed interception in the fourth quarter. But in between Roberts becoming the first player with multiple interceptions in one of the 24 Big 12 championship games, transfer Romello Height recovered when Bachmeier fumbled when being sacked. Harrington made a 44-yarder that time. Robertson almost had his hands on another interception, but that deflection came on a fourth-down play that gave the ball back to the Red Raiders. Tech went ahead to stay on Eakin's incredible leaping 33-yard TD catch with 10:42 left in the second quarter that made it 10-7. He reached up with both hands to snag the ball, then got a foot down while twisting and lunging into the end zone. Eakin had a TD catch in each of Tech's first three games, but then had only one in the previous nine before the Big 12 title game. - Texas Tech/AP College Football

Texas A&M fell out of the top five of The Associated Press college football poll for the first time in two months Sunday, Texas Tech notched its highest ranking in 17 years and a season-high four teams from Group of Five conferences are ranked as the top five got a shuffle with a week to go before the postseason bracket is set. No. 1 Ohio State and No. 2 Indiana, the only remaining unbeatens, are the top two teams for a seventh straight poll heading into their Big Ten title game clash on Saturday. No. 3 Georgia and No. 4 Oregon each moved up a spot, and Texas Tech's No. 5 ranking is its best since it spent three weeks at No. 2 in November 2008. Mississippi remained No. 6 and was followed by Texas A&M, which slipped four spots after its 10-point loss at Texas. Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Alabama rounded out the top 10 for the third straight week. The weekend results created two top-10 matchups in conference championship games this Saturday. Besides the Big Ten showdown, Georgia and Alabama will play for the Southeastern Conference crown.

The other Top 25 matchup pits Texas Tech against No. 11 BYU in the Big 12. The Atlantic Coast Conference game matches No. 16 Virginia against a Duke team that is 7-5 and received no votes in Sunday's poll. No. 12 Miami and No. 13 Vanderbilt traded places in the rankings. The Hurricanes, who finished the regular season with a 31-point road win over Pittsburgh, are the highest-ranked ACC team and hope to receive a College Football Playoff at-large bid. Vanderbilt slipped despite beating Tennessee by 21 points on the road. James Madison, which will host Troy for the Sun Belt championship game Friday, moved up one spot to No. 19 and is the highest-ranked Group of Five team. Three teams from the American Conference are behind the Dukes: No. 20 North Texas, No. 21 Tulane and No. 24 Navy. North Texas visits Tulane for the American championship game Friday. Tulane, at No. 24, was the only G5 team in last week's CFP rankings. - AP College Football

  11/29/25 - Behren MortonrSr/2026, Texas Tech, 6-2, 210 (DS#15 QB) + More +

Behren Morton threw for 310 yards and three touchdowns, linebacker Jacob Rodriguez scored his second offensive TD in as many games, and No. 7 Texas Tech beat West Virginia 49-0 on Saturday in the Red Raiders' final tuneup before the Big 12 championship game. Texas Tech (11-1, 8-1 Big 12, No. 5 CFP) had already clinched a spot in the title game against No. 11 BYU in Arlington, Texas, when Arizona State lost to Arizona on Friday night. But the Red Raiders had plenty of motivation, needing a win over the Mountaineers to continue their trajectory toward at least hosting a first-round home game in the College Football Playoff. Texas Tech was dominant from the start, scoring touchdowns on four of their first five drives. Unlike two weeks ago when he scored on a short run against UCF, Rodriguez didn't strike a Heisman pose after taking a direct snap and rushing for a 1-yard TD on Texas Tech's first offensive series. His other TD this season came on a 69-yard fumble return.

Just before halftime, Rodriguez, who began his college career as a quarterback at Virginia, lined up in the wildcat again from the West Virginia 1. He threw a pass intended for Terrance Carter that the Mountaineers' Ben Cutter intercepted in the back of the end zone. Morton showed no mobility problems while playing through a leg injury that prompted him to wear a boot during the team's bye week. Morton threw TD passes of 19 and 4 yards to Caleb Douglas and 4 yards to Cameron Dickey. Morton, who was replaced by Mitch Griffis early in the third quarter, completed 25 of 32 passes. Douglas had five catches for 127 yards. Freshman Scotty Fox Jr., the fourth starting quarterback for West Virginia (4-8, 2-7) this season due to injuries, was replaced in the third quarter by Max Brown. Brown's first completion as a Mountaineer was followed by a 67-yard interception return by Texas Tech's Amier Boyd. That set up the first of Micah Hudson's two TD catches from Lloyd Jones III. - Texas Tech/AP College Football

Linebacker Jacob Rodriguez struck the Heisman Trophy pose again after the first offensive touchdown of his career, Reggie Virgil scored three times and No. 8 Texas Tech routed UCF 48-9 on Saturday. The Red Raiders (10-1, 7-1 Big 12, No. 6 CFP) stayed on track for a shot at their first Big 12 championship in their regular-season home finale, reaching 10 victories for the first time since going 11-2 under the late Mike Leach in 2008. The Golden Knights (4-6, 1-6) didn't pick up a first down until they trailed 21-0 and dropped to 0-4 on the road, getting outscored 78-12 combined in the past two, a pair of trips to Texas. UCF had a season-low 52 yards rushing against the nation's No. 1 run defense. "The question was how were we going to handle success after last week," said coach Joey McGuire, referring to a 29-7 victory over BYU in a top-10 matchup. "I've got these old guys. It's a vet team. They believe in each other. They care about each other. I'm really proud of the way they played." Just as he did after a highlight-reel interception against the Cougars, Rodriguez lifted one leg and extended an arm while surrounded by teammates after the former high school quarterback scored on a 2-yard run in the wildcat. "Everybody's talking about quarterbacks for Heisman," McGuire said, "so we put him at quarterback today, he scored a touchdown." Rodriguez, who scored touchdowns on fumble recoveries this season and last against Oklahoma State, set up Vigil's third TD for a 35-2 lead with his fourth interception this season.

No need for another Heisman pose, though, after the TD. "We repped it throughout the week, and it looked good," Rodriguez said. "Obviously, we were going on scout team. When they said (as we) got closer to the goal line, "Be ready," so I ran over there from the other side of the sideline and I was ready to go." Virgil's first two scores came on the first two carries of his career in the second quarter, a 5-yarder early and a 30-yard sprint that ended with him hopping and skipping into the end zone. Cameron Dickey also had two rushing TDs. Behren Morton threw for 149 yards and the 8-yard score to Virgil before getting replaced by Mitch Griffis late in the first half. Morton is playing through a leg injury, and original backup Will Hammond is out for the season with a knee injury. UCF's first points came on a safety when Texas Tech left tackle Howard Sampson was called for holding in the end zone. - Texas Tech/AP College Football
