His command of the offense elevated SFA into one of the top scoring units in the country and allowed the Lumberjacks to play balanced, controlled football all season.   WEEK 12 SOUTHLAND SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Carlos Alvarado, SFA - K- R-So. - Tomball, Texas (Tomball HS),...The Jacks elected to take the points and Alvarado delivered three times in the win over Lamar. He connected on a career-long 43 yarder to put SFA up 10-0 at the end of the first quarter, hit a 20 yarder with under six minutes before the intermission and added a 33-yarder in the fourth quarter for a 26-7 lead.   WEEK 13 FCS NATIONAL SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Bugs Mortimer, Stephen F. Austin, PR/WR, R-Jr. 5-10, 177,...The FCS' leading punt returner reversed a return for a 79-yard touchdown and set the SFA seasonal yardage record as the Southland Conference champion won at Northwestern State 62-14. It was Mortimer's fourth punt return TD - the most by an FCS player in a season since 2016. He also caught two passes and had 106 all-purpose yards. Mortimer is averaging 21.5 yards on 25 returns, and his 537 yards are 165 more than any other FCS player this season.   Jaylen Jenkins rushed for 113 yards and three touchdowns, Sam Vidlak completed nine of his 10 passes for 207 yards and three touchdowns, and Stephen F. Austin rolled to a 62-14 victory over Northwestern State in the 79th meeting between the two rivals. With the win, the Lumberjacks (10-2, 8-0 Southland Conference), ranked 13th in the FCS coaches' poll, secured the conference title outright. They clinched a share of the title, and an automatic bid to the FCS playoff, with last week's 26-15 win over Lamar. SFA took the lead early with a 79-yard punt return by Bugs Mortimer, and held a 20-0 lead at the end of the first quarter thanks to touchdown receptions by Derrick Bohler and Kylon Harris. Harris tallied 135 yards on just four receptions, and Bohler had 49 yards and two scores on three catches.

Richard Reese rushed for 115 yards and a score on 14 carries, as SFA rushers racked up 320 rushing yards. The Lumberjacks had 607 yards of total offense to Northwestern State's 307. Eli Anderson was 11-of-16 for 150 yards and two touchdowns for the Demons (1-11, 0-8). The winner of the rivalry game receives the largest trophy in college sports, a 7-foot-6, 320-pound log that features each school's logo as well as the results from every previous game.   Gavin Rutherford and Jerrell Wimbley each had touchdown runs, and Stephen F. Austin jumped out early and beat Lamar 26-15 on Saturday night to clinch at least a share of the Southland Conference title. It was the ninth straight win for the FCS 17th-ranked Lumberjacks (9-2, 7-0), who have a one-game lead over Southeastern Louisiana (8-3, 6-1) in the conference and will conclude their regular season on the road against Northwestern State (0-7, 1-10). Wimbley's 13-yard touchdown run gave the Lumberjacks a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter. Rutherford's 9-yard TD run stretched the lead to 23-7 midway through the third. Wimbley had 19 carries for 65 yards rushing. Rutherford was 17-of-31 passing for 140 yards and he added 75 yards on the ground on 13 carries.

Carlos Alvarado made field goals from 43 and 20 yards, and his 33-yarder made it 26-7 with 8:36 remaining. Jacob Hand also kicked a 56-yard field goal for the Lumberjacks. Aiden McCown and Robert Coleman combined for 18-of-26 passing for 124 yards for No. 14 Lamar (8-3, 5-2). LaDamian McDowell had a 54-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to pull the Cardinals to 10-7. Xavier Coleman added a short-yardage TD run with 4:14 to play. Stephen F.   Isaiah Davis caught two touchdown passes, four other players found the end zone, and Stephen F. Austin defeated Houston Christian in a 50-3 rout to stay perfect in Southland Conference play. The Lumberjacks (8-2, 6-0), ranked 21st in the FCS Coaches Poll, were dominant on both sides of the ball, gaining 400 total yards to the Huskies' 134. Defensively, SFA had six sacks, two interceptions, and 13 tackles for loss.

Jerrell Wimbley (15 carries, 48 yards) rushed for a score, and JT Kitna scored his first career rushing touchdown and threw for another as the backups entered the game in the fourth quarter. Kylon Harris and Jordan Nabors each had touchdown receptions. Three straight touchdown drives in the third quarter put the game firmly out of reach. Houston Christian's lone points, a 45-yard field goal from Ryan Zuckert, came early in the second quarter. SFA still leads the series, 6-1 since 2014.   Sam Vidlak threw two touchdown passes, backup quarterback Gavin Rutherford added a touchdown pass and run, and Stephen F. Austin posted a wire-to-wire 41-17 victory over UT Rio Grande Valley on Saturday night. Rutherford and Jaylen Jenkins sandwiched 1-yard touchdown runs around a 30-yard field goal by Carlos Alvarado and Stephen F. Austin (7-2, 5-0 Southland Conference), ranked No. 23 in the FCS coaches' poll, led 17-0 after one quarter. Vidlak tossed a 9-yard touchdown pass to Clayton Wayland at the end of a 13-play, 96-yard drive and Alvarado added another field goal for a 27-0 advantage at halftime.

UT Rio Grande (6-3, 2-3) managed three first downs and 49 yards of offense before the break. Vidlak connected with Kylon Harris for a 6-yard score in the third quarter and Rutherford hit Wayland for a 10-yard touchdown in the fourth. Vidlak completed 25 of 32 passes for 203 yards and Rutherford added 62 yards on 6-for-10 passing.for the Lumberjacks. Eddie Lee Marburger totaled 115 yards on 16-for-24 passing with a touchdown and two interceptions for the Vaqueros.   Sam Vidlak threw two touchdown passes to Kylon Harris, Gavin Rutherford had two short touchdown runs, and Stephen F. Austin beat East Texas A&M 31-21 on Saturday night. Vidlak opened the scoring for Stephen F. Austin (6-2, 4-0 Southland Conference) with a 13-yard touchdown toss to Harris. Ron Peace answered with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Devin Matthews and a 6-yard touchdown run with 15 seconds left to give East Texas A&M (2-6, 2-2) a 14-7 lead after one quarter. Rutherford's 1-yard touchdown run was the lone score of the second quarter and pulled the Lumberjacks even at halftime. Vidlak connected with Harris from 38 yards out for the only score of the third quarter and Stephen F. Austin led 21-14.

KJ Shankle scored on a 1-yard run for the Lions to tie it at 21-all early in the fourth quarter. Lavon Williams intercepted Vidlak and returned it 46 yards to the Lumberjacks' 13-yard line to set up the score. The Lumberjacks, ranked No. 23 in the FCS coaches poll, regained the lead 28-21 when Rutherford scored from a yard out at the end of a 12-play drive with 7:21 left to play. Carlos Alvarado made it a two-score game with a 40-yard field goal inside the final two minutes. Vidlak totaled 309 yards on 30-for-46 passing but was picked off three times. Jerrell Wimbley rushed 26 times for 124 yards. Harris caught 16 passes for 183 yards - both career highs for the senior.   Jerrell Wimbley and Gavin Rutherford each ran for a touchdown, Bugs Mortimer returned a punt 66 yards for a TD, and Stephen F. Austin beat Nicholls 34-7 on a rain-soaked Saturday night for its fifth consecutive win. Nicholls (1-6, 1-2 Southland Conference) has lost six in a row since a 20-6 win over Incarnate Word in the season opener. Jacob Hand kicked a 54-yard field goal for Stephen F. Austin (5-2, 3-0) to open the scoring less than two minutes into the game, Rutherford scored on a 2-yard run late in the first quarter and Wimbley ran for a 5-yard TD to make it 16-0 early in the second.

Mortimer caught a punt at the 34, started right before cutting back to his left and running to the sideline where, near midfield, he evaded four would-be tacklers. Mortimer worked all the way back to the right sideline and raced to the end zone for a touchdown early in the third quarter to give the Lumberjacks a 26-0 lead. Sam Vidlak was 17-of-25 passing for 179 yards and threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Clayton Wayland. The Colonels finished with 187 total yards, 56 rushing. King HS),...Wimbley's 43-yard touchdown run with less than two minutes to play capped an impressive effort from the senior back. He carried 29 times for 171 yards, averaging 5.9 yards per carry. His scoring run pushed the veteran ‘Jack past the 2,000-yard career rushing mark, making him just the 11th player in program history to reach the milestone.   WEEK 6 SOUTHLAND OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sam Vidlak, SFA - QB - Sr. - Applegate, Oregon (Hidden Valley HS),...Vidlak delivered an efficient performance, going 19-of-26 for 261 yards and three touchdowns to lead SFA to a road win at No. 20 UIW. He connected on touchdown passes of 20, 37, and 45 yards and added a 58-yard completion that set up another score. Vidlak's second touchdown, a 37-yard strike to Derrick Bohler and the 36th of his career, pushed the senior past the 4,000-yard passing mark as a collegian.   WEEK 6 SOUTHLAND DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jaydon Southard, SFA - LB - Sr. - Wichita Falls, Texas (Iowa Park HS) - FCS National Defensive Player of the Week Southard matched his career high with 16 tackles, including 12 solo stops, in Stephen F. Austin's 31-17 win at UIW. Three of his tackles went for 19 yards in losses, including 1.5 sacks, and he also forced a fumble. Both his tackles for loss and sack totals marked new career bests.
