Terrion Avery scored on a 13-yard run with 1:39 remaining to get the Jaguars (2-0) a 19-all tie and then Quentin Wilfawn recovered a fumble at the Bowling Green 33 that led to the winning kick. Avery's TD run was made possible by Jake Bentley's 20-yard pass to Caullin Lacy on fourth-and-8 with three minutes remaining.

South Alabama took its first lead on Kareem Walker's 1-yard run in the third quarter but the Falcons grabbed it back at 19-12 on Matt McDonald's 33-yard scoring pass to Andrew Bench and a two-point conversion. Bowling Green (0-2), which had only 9 rushing yards, still led most of the way. A blocked punt out of the end zone for a safety and Jake Bentley's 27-yard pick-6 gave the Falcons a 8-0 lead after the first quarter. Toledo led 7-0 with 6:50 left in the first quarter when DeMeer Blankumsee blocked a Ryan Richter punt that was scooped up by Maxen Hook and returned 25 yards for a TD. The Spartans answered with a nine-play 75-yard drive that culminated with Juwan Carter's 47-yard scoring strike to Justin Smith to make it 14-7. Carter Bradley completed 8 of 11 passes for 183 yards and a TD - an 84-yard strike to Devin Maddox - for the Rockets. Finn finished with 82 yards on nine carries.   Toledo has its quarterback. Rockets coach Jason Candle announced Monday that fourth-year sophomore Carter Bradley will start against Norfolk State on Saturday at the Glass Bowl. "Carter Bradley will start at quarterback Saturday night," Candle said. "You will see some Dequan Finn also Saturday night. Carter's had a very good camp. I think Dequan has had a very good camp, as well. Both guys deserve to play, and that's how we will approach it. "But I don't think in Carter's case or DQ's case that this is an ongoing competition, and I don't think if you make a bad play that you need to look over your shoulder that you're going to come out of the football game on the next snap. Both of them bring a little bit something different to the table, and that's how we will approach this first game." Bradley has started three games for the Rockets, completing 58 of 120 pass attempts for 708 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions. During the shortened 2020 season, he threw for a career-high 432 yards against Central Michigan, the most by a Mid-American Conference QB all year, and ranked third in the conference in passing efficiency (164.1). - Toledo Blade

  08/18/21 - C.J. PersonrSo/2025, South Alabama, 6-2, 292 (DS#999 DT) + More +

How does first-year defensive coordinator Charlton Warren improve an IU defense that ranked top-15 nationally in forced turnovers and sacks per game? The answer is an increased emphasis on creating pressure or "havoc" in the opposing backfield without blitzing, allowing the back seven to play tighter coverage for shorter periods of time. IU defensive line coach Kevin Peoples said the defense keeps tracks of every havoc play (sack, tackle for loss, forced fumble, pass breakup, interception) during practice and names a havoc leader at the end of each day. Through five days of fall practice, redshirt sophomore defensive tackle C.J. Person and the defensive line have been consistently disruptive up front.

At 6-3 and 292 pounds, Person added lean muscle during the offseason while maintaining his strength and increasing his explosiveness off the line of scrimmage. His ability to win his matchups up front and generate pressure will be key for the Hoosiers. "C.J. Person has really stepped up, (we're) pleased with him," Peoples said. "C.J.'s always been a talent. I mean he's been twitchy, he's got a little extra athleticism, a little twitch. ... He did some really good things for us last year, but it started with him in the spring and then all through the summer. He had a tremendous summer. "He changed his body... He's done an unbelievable job of really taking coach (Aaron) Wellman's leadership in the weight room, and then changing the things that he needs to change." - Indianapolis Star/News

  08/15/21 - JaChai BakerrSr/2022, South Alabama, 6-6, 321 (DS#47 OT) + More +

South Alabama held its fourth preseason football practice on Monday morning at the Jaguar Training Center, and several newcomers are beginning to make their presence known. Chief among those is offensive lineman Ja'Chai Baker, who took virtually every rep during 11-on-11 team drills as the first-team left tackle. An all-conference pick on the FCS level at Southeast Missouri last season, the 6-foot-6, 310-pound Baker (whose first name is pronounced "Juh-KYE") hasn't yet won a job outright, head coach Kane Wommack said, but has made excellent progress through the first week of camp. "We're starting to make some moves on the offensive line," Wommack said. "Obviously we've brought some of these transfer guys in here and we need to see them working with different people. Some of the guys that were here in the spring, certainly they're going to have a little bit more experience in terms of what we're doing and the communication level. I want to see kind of how they interact with different people, but I thought Ja'Chai has been doing a good job. And so he deserves some (first-team) reps." - Birmingham News

  08/12/21 - Jamal BrooksrSr/2022, South Alabama, 6-0, 234 (DS#65 ILB) + More +

South Alabama's offensive and defensive depth charts remain largely stable from the spring, with one exception. Linebacker Jamal Brooks, a fifth-year senior who transferred in from Missouri over the summer, saw time with the first and second defensive units during 11-on-11 team drills on the first two days of preseason camp. Though the Jaguars aren't doing any contact work just yet, Brooks has managed to bat down a few passes that have come his way.

Brooks, a former Bessemer City High School standout, totaled 41 tackles in 46 career games at Missouri. He has proven himself to be both a vocal leader and a playmaker during the first two days of camp, head coach Wommack said Saturday. "I'm really impressed with Jamal," Wommack said. "Communication is so important, and that was one thing we talk about every single day in our defense - relentlessly loud communication. It exudes confidence with everybody else on the field. That's with your team, but it's also intimidating for our opponent. And Jamal is so loud when he gets on that field. And he's also really instinctive; he got his hands on a couple of balls today. We've got to come up with some interceptions off of that." - Birmingham News
