Throughout his San Jose State University career, starting linebacker Tysyn Parker displayed a quiet dedication to the game of football, a focused pursuit of a college degree, and very willing to assist those who could use a helping hand. For combining all three traits during his four years as a Spartan, Parker, from Serra High in Gardena, Calif., and majoring in justice studies, is one of 45 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) players nominated for the 2021 American Football Coaches Association's (AFCA) Good Works Team and this year's Wuerffel Trophy. At San Jose State for the last three years, Parker has mentored fourth and fifth grade students at a nearby elementary school who are lacking a male role model and participated in community outreach events such as Autism Speaks and the Silicon Valley YWCA's Walk a Mile in Her Shoes to raise awareness that any form of violence against women is not acceptable. - San Jose State Football

For San Jose State University defensive lineman Cade Hall, appearing on a college football national watch list the past two weeks is a regular occurrence. A year ago, Hall was second nationally in quarterback sacks per game with 10.0 in seven contests as San Jose State won the Mountain West championship for the first time since joining the conference in 2013 and first league title since sharing a portion of the Big West championship in 1991. - San Jose State Football

University of Hawaii quarterback Chevan Cordeiro is believed to be the first college athlete in the state of Hawaii to enter into an endorsement partnership with a local company. The Saint Louis graduate was introduced as a spokesperson for Central Pacific Bank on Thursday on the heels of the NCAA announcing a uniform interim policy suspending name, image, and likeness (NIL) rules for all incoming and current student-athletes in all sports. "I'm thankful to Central Pacific Bank for giving me this opportunity," said Cordeiro. "This is an exciting development for me and for college athletes in general. I look forward to learning more about how to balance the demands of being a student-athlete and what it takes to be successful in business." Terms of the deal between CPB and Cordeiro were not disclosed. - Khon2.com

  07/04/21 - Nick StarkelrSr/2022, San Jose State, 6-4, 217 (DS#24 QB) + More +

On the first day collegiate athletes were allowed to earn money off their name, image and likeness, San Jose State quarterback Nick Starkel had a piece of advice for his teammates: don't lend it out to just anyone - and maybe not at all. "If you're missing practice for a photoshoot because you got a deal with a brand you're working on, I will rip you a new one," Starkel said in a social media video Thursday. "In the end, it is America. It is a free country. Do what you desire. But a PSA to my teammates … I do not expect you to let it distract you. If it does, we're gonna have a serious problem."

Starkel, a senior who passed for 2,174 yards and 17 touchdowns last season, posted a series of videos to Instagram in response to the new law of the land beginning Thursday. Facing laws in six states set to take effect this month, the NCAA agreed to change its so-called NIL rules, paving the way for a new potential source of income for amateur athletes, who had previously been barred by the NCAA of receiving any compensation. Starkel, however, said the NIL deals are unlikely to benefit everyone. "Everybody's acting like everyone out here is gonna get a shoe brand deal or something," Starkel said. "Name one offensive lineman in the NFL that has his own shoe deal. It doesn't happen. Not everyone's gonna get it. It's the best players at the best schools." - San Jose Mercury News

  01/15/21 - Trevon SidneyrSr/2022, San Jose State, 5-11, 178 (DS#288 WR) + More +

Illinois football has lost another player to the transfer portal this offseason, with senior receiver Trevon Sidney deciding to move on from the Illini. Sidney joined the Illini in 2019 after spending three seasons at Southern California. He made a quick impact in Champaign-Urbana as a redshirt junior, hauling in 16 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown in five games. But the 5-foot-11, 180-pound Sidney missed that season's final eight games with an injury and did not play at all during the 2020 season because of an injury. - News Gazette Tribune

  01/13/21 - Elijah CooksrSr/2023, San Jose State, 6-4, 219 (DS#49 WR) + More +

It's a unique opportunity - hopefully, once in a lifetime - and 11 Nevada football players plan to take advantage of it. With the NCAA basically offering to not count the 2020 season against a player's college eligibility, nearly a dozen Wolf Pack seniors have said they plan to come back to play in 2021. The list includes six players who were named to the All-Mountain West teams last year. Call it "The Fifth Year," call it "Senior 2.0," call it what you will, but Nevada should be loaded, especially at receiver and defensive line, with the addition of a group that normally would have been out of eligibility. - Reno Gazette Journal

  01/10/21 - Tre WalkerSr/2021, San Jose State, 5-11, 178 (DS#61 WR) + More +

Mississippi State football nearly landed an experienced player for coach Mike Leach's offense Friday, but an SEC bylaw got in the way. Former San Jose State wide receiver Tre Walker announced his intention to transfer to Mississippi State via the NCAA transfer portal. Hours later, he tweeted he will not be transferring to MSU after all because of a rule that prohibited him from enrolling. That rule is bylaw 14.5.5.6 in the SEC Bylaws and Commissioner Regulations handbook. It states an athlete transferring from one four-year institution to another must meet certain requirements. One is that the athlete must have two years of eligibility remaining unless he has already graduated. Walker does not have his degree from San Jose State and only has one year of eligibility remaining, so he is not eligible to enroll at Mississippi State or any other SEC institution. - The Clarion Ledger

Mississippi State added another receiver to its already dynamic room. Tre Walker, a four-year standout at San Jose State, announced his intention to transfer to MSU for his final year of eligibility via Twitter on Friday. Walker helped the Trojans to a 7-1 record and the Mountain West title game this year. He finished his time at SJSU with 189 career catches for 2,790 yards -- both of which rank top-10 in program history. Walker, who will be on scholarship at MSU, becomes the fifth transfer to join MSU over the offseason. Other imports include quarterbacks Jack Abraham (Southern Mississippi), Chance Lovertich (South Alabama) and Jack Kristofek (Sam Houston State). The Bulldogs also added former Central Florida defensive end Randy Charlton. - The Dispatch

San Jose State's rough week got even rougher with the news star wide receiver Tre Walker is transferring and wide receivers coach Kevin Cummings has been hired at Arizona. Walker, a two-time All-Mountain West Conference receiver who had nearly 200 catches and 3,000 yards in his four years at San Jose State, announced he'll play his fifth and final collegiate season elsewhere. That news seemed to catch Spartans quarterback Nick Starkel by surprise. Walker officially entered transfer over the weekend and it's not a stretch to believe he could be following his position coach, Cummings, to the University of Arizona. - San Jose Mercury News

Chevan Cordeiro threw three first-half touchdown passes and Calvin Turner had two long scoring plays to help Hawaii beat Houston 28-14 on Thursday in the New Mexico Bowl. The game was moved to Frisco from its usual location in Albuquerque because of COVID-19 restrictions in New Mexico. Hawaii (5-4) gave first-year coach Todd Graham his 100th career victory. He previously coached at Rice, Tulsa, Pittsburgh and Arizona State.

The Rainbow Warriors had a winning record for the third season in a row, the first time they've done that since 2001-04. Houston (3-5) has consecutive losing seasons for the first time since 2000-02. Cordeiro completed 15 of 23 passes for 136 yards and had eight carries for 33 yards. - AP College Football
