Joe Mancusco threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more to lead Richmond to a 51-27 win over Delaware on Saturday. Mancusco was 13-of-21 passing for 179 yards and kept the ball 14 times for 116 yards. Mancuso opened the scoring with a 5-yard TD run and his 14-yard connection with Leroy Henley late in the second quarter put the Spiders (5-5, 3-4 Colonial Athletic Association) up 24-14 at halftime. He scored on a 2-yard run following an interception in the third quarter and on Delaware's next possession Kobie Turner returned a fumble 17 yards for a score to make it 37-21. Mancuso had a 20-yard scoring pass to Connor Deveney and a 13-yarder to Jasiah Williams in the fourth quarter. Zach Gwynn threw for 331 yards and two touchdowns for the Blue Hens (5-5, 3-4), but he was intercepted twice. The Spiders' defense limited the Hokies to 318 yards, including just 106 on the ground, and only gave up 14 points to the VT offense. Redshirt freshman backup quarterback Collin Ironside passed for 230 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score to lead VMI to a 31-21 nonconference victory over Cornell in the Big Red's season opener on Saturday. It was Cornell's first game in 665 days after the Ivy League declined to play in 2020 amid the COVID-19 outbreak. VMI (2-1) grabbed a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter, scoring on Korey Bridy's 1-yard plunge after Stone Snyder's fumble recovery set up the 30-yard drive. Cornell pulled even at the 11:08 mark of the second quarter when Richie Kenney fired a 45-yard scoring strike to Thomas Glover.

The defense set up the Keydets' second score - stopping the Big Red on a fourth-and-2 at the Cornell 36-yard line. Ironside, who took over when sophomore starter Seth Morgan was injured in the first quarter, capped the six-play drive with a 16-yard TD pass to Jakob Herres and a 14-7 lead. Cornell appeared to forge a halftime tie after Eric Diggs picked off an Ironside pass that led to SK Howard's 3-yard TD run with 20 seconds remaining. But VMI returned the ensuing kickoff 60 yards to set up Jerry Rice's 41-yard field goal as time expired for a 17-14 lead. - AP College Football

Joe Mancuso threw two scores and Aaron Dykes and Savon Smith each ran for a touchdown and Richmond squashed Lehigh 31-3 on Saturday. The Spiders scored four times in the second quarter. Mancuso sandwiched passing scores of 7 and 4 yards to Dykes and Leroy Henley respectively around 2-yard scoring runs by Smith and Dykes for a 28-3 lead at halftime. Mancuso threw for 131 yards, Smith ran for 74 yards and Dykes 71. The Spiders' defense limited Lehigh quarterbacks Cross Wilkinson and Alec Beesmer to 78 and 28 yards respectively and each threw an interception. Richmond (2-0) outgained Lehigh 390-264 in total yardage and limited the Mountain Hawks (0-2) to 3 for 11 on third-down conversions. Seth Morgan threw for two touchdowns and rushed for one to help defending Southern Conference champion VMI beat Pioneer champ Davidson 45-24 on Saturday. VMI won its opening game in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2009-10. Last season, VMI went on to win its first league title since 1977 by beating The Citadel. Jakob Herres scored both of VMI's touchdowns through the air, catching seven passes for 79 yards. Leroy Thomas added 10 catches for 58 yards, and Korey Bridy had a team-high 15 carries for 68 yards and a TD. VMI built a 21-0 lead and added 17 straight points, spanning halftime, for a 38-10 lead midway through the fourth. Grant Swinehart's 52-yard rushing touchdown made it 45-17. Louis Colosimo threw two interceptions in his eight pass attempts for Davidson. Elijah Burrell completed all seven of his passes. Joe Mancuso threw two touchdown passes including the game-winner with 6:20 remaining to lift Richmond past William & Mary 21-14 on Saturday in the spring season opener for both teams. Hollis Mathis had a 19-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter and tossed a 2-yard TD pass to Anthony Mague early in the fourth, and William & Mary had a 14-13 lead. Mancuso then led a 14-play, 77-yard drive capped by his 6-yard scoring throw to Cornell transfer John Fitzgerald. The Tribe went three-and-out with 4:33 to play on the ensuing series, and the Spiders ran out the clock. Mancuso threw for 141 yards and a 7-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Dykes in the first quarter. Reece Udinksi, the Southern Conference preseason offensive player of the year, passed for 248 yards and a pair of touchdowns as VMI edged Furman 14-13 on Saturday. Nursing a one-point lead into the fourth quarter, VMI played clock control but the strategy appeared to have backfired as the Paladins were driving with under a minute to go until a flukey turnover with 47 seconds left allowed the Keydets to preserve the win. Furman, which started its final drive pinned at its own 11, had advanced to the VMI 24 when a third-down snap bounced off the hip of Ryan DeLucca, who was in motion behind the line of scrimmage. The ball bounced right to VMI's Carter Johnson, who was crashing through the line of scrimmage, and Johnson wrapped it up. The Maryland football team has added some much needed depth at quarterback. Reece Udinski, a graduate transfer from Virginia Military Institute, announced his commitment to Maryland on Sunday. The 6-foot-4, 224-pound Udinski was named the Southern Conference Preseason Offensive Player of the Year for the Football Championship Subdivision Keydets after passing for 3,276 yards with 19 touchdowns and five interceptions in 2019.
