  2021 ALL-CAA FOOTBALL SECOND TEAM (COACHES): L.B. Mack III, Rhode Island, LB, Sr.,...Mack led Rhode Island with 11 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks. He ranked fifth in the league in sacks and seventh in TFLs, while also finishing fourth on the team with 51 total tackles. In URI's win over Delaware, Mack returned a blocked punt for a touchdown. He was the CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week after recording 4.5 TFLs and 3.5 sacks in a win at Massachusetts.   2021 NEC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR (COACHES): RB Malik Grant, Sacred Heart,...Grant could not have been a better backup plan when Sacred Heart lost All-American Julius Chestnut for eight weeks to an injury. The Empire State product stepped right in and carried the load for the NEC's top-ranked rushing attack. The 5-foot-7 running back rushed for 1,288 yards during the regular season, accounting for the third-highest total amongst Division I FCS leaders. Grant, who averaged 117.1 yards per game on the ground, broke the 100-yard rushing barrier in six of his 10 starts. He gained 5.7 yards per carry and found paydirt 11 times total (9 rush, 2 rec).

Grant rushed for more than 180 yards in three consecutive Northeast Conference contests during the Pioneers' active six-game win streak. He piled up 228 yards on 28 carries in a 20-10 victory over Merrimack, breaking into the NEC's All-time Single-Game Top 25 with the performance. The junior running back gained 211 yards from scrimmage in a Week 7 triumph over Nutmeg State rival Central Connecticut. In Week 8, he rushed for 186 yards and two scores against Duquesne in a re-match of the 2020-21 NEC Spring Championship Game. - NEC Football

  Kasim Hill threw four touchdown passes - two of them to freshman running back Jaylen Smith - and Rhode Island cruised to a 28-3 victory over New Hampshire in Colonial Athletic Conference play on Saturday. Hill connected with Smith for an 81-yard scoring strike on Rhode Island's third play from scrimmage as the Rams (7-3, 4-3) grabbed a 7-0 lead. Hill hooked up with Matt Pires for a 6-yard score with 1:38 left before halftime for a 14-3 lead. Hill and Smith teamed up for a 2-yard TD in the third quarter. Hill fired a 20-yard scoring strike to Ivory Frimpong in the fourth to cap the scoring. Hill completed 12 of 23 passes for 221 yards. Smith ran for 117 yards on 18 carries and caught three passes for 88 yards. Bret Edwards connected on 10 of 16 passes for 85 yards for the Wildcats (3-7, 2-5). Backup Tommy Herion was 5-of-15 passing for 50 yards with a pick. New Hampshire managed just 159 yards of offense.   Kasim Hill threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more and FCS-member Rhode Island picked up its second-ever win over a FBS school with a 35-22 win over UMass on Saturday. It was the 89th meeting between the schools, dating to 1903, but the first time they've played since 2011 when the Minutemen began the transition up. The Rams beat UConn for its other FBS win on Nov. 11, 2000. Hill's fourth score, a 2-yard run that capped an 80-yard drive, and Jaylen Smith's 72-yard burst in the in the third quarter broke the game open as the Rams (6-3) went up 35-16. Hill was 11 of 20 for 169 yards and ran for 32 more. Jaylen Smith had 16 carries for 111 yards. Joey Kenny and Ed Lee had receiving touchdowns. Ellis Merriweather carried the ball 30 times for 118 yards with a touchdown for the Minutemen (1-8). Tyler Lytle threw for a touchdown and ran for one. - AP College Football

  Malik Grant carried it 34 times for 186 yards and two touchdowns and Sacred Heart controlled the second half en route to a 31-13 win over Duquesne on Saturday. The Pioneers (5-3, 3-1 Northeast Conference) took a 14-13 lead in the third quarter when Grant went up the middle for a 6-yard touchdown. He capped the scoring with a 1-yard plunge in the fourth. The Dukes (4-2, 2-1), who entered as the last unbeaten team in the league, led 13-7 at the half but did not pick up a first down in the second half and had 24 yards of offense. Sacred Heart had 17 of its 28 first downs in the second half and 213 of its 416 yards of total offense. Garrett Owens ran for 113 yards and scored Duquesne's only touchdown. - AP College Football

  Malik Grant ran ran for 183 yards on 29 carries and reached the end zone three times to lead Sacred Heart past Central Connecticut 27-17 on Saturday. Grant's 4-yard touchdown run with 3:24 left in the third quarter gave the Pioneers (4-3, 2-1 Northeast Conference) a 13-10 lead. Early in the fourth, Grant scored from 15 yards out running up the middle and breaking tackles near the goal line to extend the margin. Marquez McCray threw for 178 yards for Sacred Heart now winners of back-to-back contests following a two-game skid.   L.B. Mack III returned a blocked put for the game-winner and Jordan Jones intercepted a pass in the end zone to seal it as Rhode Island scored twice in the fourth quarter and held on in the final minute to edge Delaware 22-15 in a clash of FCS top teams on Saturday. Delaware (3-2, 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association), ranked No. 10 in the FCS coaches poll, overcame a 12-0 Rhode Island lead to surge ahead 15-12 with a pair of touchdowns and a two-point conversion run.

Undefeated Rhode Island, No. 20 in the FCS coaches poll, is 5-0 for the first time since 2001 and 3-0 in conference. The Rams answered the Delaware surge with a C.J. Carrick field goal, his third of the game, and Mack's 28-yard return of a punt blocked by AJ Bibeault. Jordan's interception in the end zone with 23 seconds left to seal the win was his second of the game and fifth of the season. Dejoun Lee carried 19 times for 115 yards and scored on a two-point conversion for Delaware. Lee has surpassed 100 yards rushing in the Blue Hens last three games and a 7-yard gainer early on pushed him past 2,000 yards career rushing.   Andre Blackett stuffed Ty Son Lawson on a fourth-and-1 play from the 2-yard line to secure Rhode Island's first-ever win over Stony Brook, 27-20 in overtime on Saturday. The Rams (4-0, 2-0) broke a seven-game skid against Stony Brook (1-4, 0-2) after seven losses since joining the Colonial Athletic Association. Rhode Island, ranked 23rd in the FCS coaches' poll, missed field goals of 45 and 51 yards on their last two possessions of regulation, the second coming on the final play. The Rams got the ball first in overtime, and after a 2-yard loss, Kasim Hill hit Caleb Warren over the middle for a touchdown. Hill finished 21 of 37 for 226 yards and he added 66 yards on the ground with a touchdown. The TD capped a 94-yard drive that gave the Rams a 20-13 lead early in the fourth quarter. Justin Antrum ran for 104 yards and a score. Stony Brook quarterback Tyquell Fields threw for 101 yards but ran for a pair of scores, the second coming with 7:40 to play that tied the game. Starting in place of injured All-American Julius Chestnut, the running back totaled 173 yards from scrimmage and scored his second touchdown of the season. The Empire State product averaged 5.3 yards per carry en-route to breaking the 100-yard rushing barrier for the first time as a collegian. Grant also gained 40 receiving yards on three catches. He totaled nine first downs (7 rush, 2 receiving) in the game, including a key 4th-and-1 conversion on the Pioneers' touchdown drive that closed the first half. Grant's three-yard touchdown run capped a 12-play, 89-yard possession that boosted Sacred Heart's lead to 21-7 with 4:06 remaining in the third quarter.   Kasim Hill threw for three touchdowns and ran for another, and Jordan Jones returned an interception 100 yards as Rhode Island raced to a 45-24 win over Brown on Saturday. Hill had touchdown passes of 7 yards to Caleb Warren and 80 yards to Matt Pires sandwiched around a Justin Antrum 1-yard plunge in a 21-point third quarter that broke the game open. Rhode Island had a 17-14 lead at halftime in the 105th meeting between the in-state rivals. In the 39th Governor's Cup, the Rams have a 20-19 edge as they opened 3-0 for the eighth time in school history. The last time URI went 3-0 was in 2005 and the first was 1898. It was the season opener for Brown. Hill was 13 for 19 for 321 yards as the Rams piled up 523 yards. Jones had his pick-six in the fourth quarter.   SEPT 6 MISSOURI VALLEY FOOTBALL NOTABLE PERFORMANCE: CB Braden Price, Illinois State - Price was all over the field for the Redbirds in their 49-7 win over Butler Saturday night at Hancock Stadium. The Wheeling, West Virginia, native recorded a pair of interceptions and tied for the team lead with seven tackles against the Bulldogs. The interceptions were the first two for Price in his time as a Redbird and he was also credited with a sack in the contest. His second INT of the night came in the endzone as the Bulldogs were threatening and on the next play from scrimmage after the touchback, Cole Mueller ripped off an 80-yard touchdown run. - Missouri Valley Football
