The speedy wide receiver, who originally opted out of the season before changing course and opting back in, missed the first three games. Purdue didn't give a reason for his absence but Moore said after Saturday's loss to Minnesota that he had re-aggravated a hamstring injury late in training camp. Moore is one of the top wide receivers in not just the Big Ten, but all of college football. He returned to the field in a big way, catching 15 passes for 116 yards with one rushing touchdown against the Gophers. Moore will present a steep challenge for a Rutgers secondary that has been inconsistent through the first five games. "They're a good football team," Schiano said. "Offensively they're very explosive. They've got Rondale Moore last week. He's one of the fastest, most explosive players in college football, period. So that was a big guy that for them to get back, and they were already doing well offensively." - Asbury Park Press

Purdue is expected to be without defensive end George Karlaftis for up to 21 days after the sophomore tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday. According to the school, an antigen test administered Tuesday morning came back positive and a follow-up PCR test confirmed the result. Karlaftis is currently at home in isolation. Big Ten protocols established in September said athletes who tested positive would have to sit out three weeks before returning to activity. Karlaftis would be eligible to return for the Big Ten's crossover games the weekend of Dec. 18-19. Karlaftis returned from an ankle injury during last week's loss at Minnesota. The West Lafayette graduate suffered the injury in the Oct. 31 victory at Illinois but missed the Nov. 14 loss to Northwestern. - Journal and Courier

He finally made an appearance Friday night, and it was quite a performance - 15 catches, 116 yards and one rushing touchdown. But Moore said to blame him for the drama and distraction his situation caused his teammates, this program and don't point the finger at coach Jeff Brohm. "First and foremost, I just wanted to apologize to my teammates, to my head coach, coach Brohm," said Moore, delivering an unscripted statement. "When I decided to come back to school, I had full intentions to play the full season and unfortunately, I re-aggravated a hamstring late in the camp. I wasn't able to go Week 1 and obviously, it was a snowball effect. I wasn't able to go until tonight.

"I'm apologizing because in the midst of them preparing each week and trying to have a shot to compete for a Big Ten championship, I was a distraction. On coach Brohm's part, I went to his office and asked him to keep it disclosed because I thought I would be back a lot sooner than I was. "A lot of people created these narratives about myself, about this team and that's never what I intended it to be. I want to apologize but to get back out there felt great. That's really all I've got for you guys." - Journal and Courier

Illinois' veteran offensive line was challenged against Wisconsin, particularly with the Badgers loading the box. Things won't get easier against Purdue. George Karlaftis is a rushing machine and recorded both a sack and a tackle for a loss last week. He led Purdue with 17 tackles for a loss and 7.5 sacks as a true freshman last season - recording two TFLs and a sack against the Illini. Defensive tackle Lorenzo Neal Jr., who sat out last season with injury and is the son of former NFL player Lorenzo Neal, was an all-Big Ten selection in 2018. "Technique is huge when you play against those types of players," Illinois center Doug Kramer Jr. said. "You've got to make up for whatever might be lacking. When you play in the Big Ten against D-Lineman, technique is critical because they're great players as well so that's what it comes down to.

"Karlaftis on the edge is another great player. Obviously he was a freshman last year and he's coming into his second year and he looks improved from last year. He looks stronger on tape, so that will be challenging for our tackles on the edge. When he occasionally does move inside, it will bring the challenge to the inside guys. Really what we have to do is match the intensity, play hard and get back to what we want to be known for which is that toughness, grit and establishing the run game, which we weren't able to do last week." - Herald-Review Times

It was a solo show for Bell again Saturday, with fellow wide receiver Rondale Moore ruled out for the second straight game. It didn't matter. Again. Bell caught all nine of his targets for 122 yards and a touchdown, with his last catch a diving, one-handed grab sealing the Boilermakers' 31-24 road victory. - News Gazette Tribune

Aidan O'Connell passed for two touchdowns and Purdue hung on to beat a COVID-19-decimated Illinois team that was down to its fourth-string quarterback, 31-24, on Saturday in a game marred by player absences and moments of utter confusion. Sophomore Coran Taylor found himself at the Illini helm on his team's second possession, following what appeared to be an ankle injury to last-minute starter Matt Robinson. Taylor threw for two touchdowns and was intercepted twice. Starting QB Brandon Peters was announced as a scratch shortly before kickoff after testing positive for COVID-19 on Thursday.

Peters' backup, Isaiah Washington, also missed the game due to contact-tracing protocols, said Illinois spokesman Kent Brown. Also among the missing was field-goal kicker James McCourt. Despite all of its player issues, Illinois (0-2, 0-2 Big Ten) still made a game of it and was within seven points and 15 yards of tying the game with less than two minutes to play. Taylor's pass fell short and the Boilermakers (2-0, 2-0) took over on downs, sealing the victory. The game was played without spectators and, for the most part, without updated official statistics available in the press box. - Purdue/AP College Football

Could Rondale Moore decide to opt back in now that the once postponed Big Ten season is back on? Don't completely rule it out. Purdue coach Jeff Brohm didn't close the door on the talented receiver, who played in just 17 games the last two seasons, reversing his decision and coming back to join the Boilermakers. "First of all, we're going to support any decision he wants to make in going forward and the avenue he wants to go," Brohm said when asked if Moore might return. "But yes, it's something we're definitely going to look into and see where that goes."

As deflating as Moore's announcement to opt-out and begin training for the NFL was to the fan base, his return would provide a significant boost - both on the field and in general interest - for the program. Moore called the decision to leave the Boilermakers on Aug. 6 "bittersweet" but felt given "the unprecedented circumstances we are currently living in, the best choice for my family is to opt out of the upcoming season and prepare for the NFL Draft." - Journal and Courier

Over the past week, Arkansas sophomore defensive tackle Isaiah Nichols has been taking more work with Jonathan Marshall and the starting defense in periods open to media viewing. Nichols, Marshall and graduate transfer Xavier Kelly appear to be the top three defensive tackles, with redshirt freshmen Marcus Miller and Taurean Carter in the next wave of inside guys. "I feel like I'm getting a lot better than last season," Nichols said recently. "But I still have some things in my game [like] my pass rush. I've got to work on my pass rush. I really have got to work on everything, especially playing in this conference with the offensive lines and the teams we face." Nichols said defensive line coach Derrick LeBlanc is instilling toughness in the group. "That's how we practice and play defense, to be tough and physical," Nichols said. "I feel like that's the most important thing in the defensive line is being tough and playing hard-nosed football." - Northwest Arkansas Times

All-American receiver Rondale Moore of Purdue says he will opt out of this college football season and will prepare to enter next year's NFL draft. Moore made the announcement with a farewell note posted on Twitter. The 5-foot-9, 180-pound junior became one of the most electrifying players in the country two years ago when he caught 114 passes for 1,254 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also had 21 carries for 213 yards and two more scores and helped the Boilermakers pull off a stunning upset of then top-ranked Ohio State. His reward - first team All-American honors as an all-purpose player. Moore entered last season billed as a potential Heisman Trophy candidate. But after being hobbled early that season with a hamstring injury, he hurt it again in the Boilermakers fourth game and missed the rest of the season. It turned out to be his final appearance in a Purdue uniform. Moore wrote that is on course to graduate in December. - AP College Football
