Aaron Young considers himself an all-purpose back that can do it all. The Rutgers offense can take another step forward this fall if it can get more out of him. "He's a running back. That's what he is. But he can go anywhere," coach Greg Schiano said. "He can line up outside at wideout and be proficient at that, he's a really good special teams. He's a very valuable guy to our football team, and really a smart player. We're going to lean on him quite a bit."

Young fits offensive coordinator Sean Gleeson's creative scheme well. At 5-foot-10 and 205 pounds, he's sturdy but shifty; best suited to make things happen in space but also capable of running between the tackles. His status as a member of the backfield is without doubt, but he can step right in as a receiver without missing a stride. Nebraska reserve wide receiver Demariyon Houston will continue his college career elsewhere. The redshirt freshman is entering his name into the transfer portal Saturday, the Journal Star confirmed. Houston acknowledged the move on Twitter as well. He thanked the coaching staff and professors at UNL, too. Houston, an Oklahoma City native, came to Nebraska as part of the 2019 recruiting class but wasn't able to crack NU's receiving rotation in either of his first two seasons on campus. He leaves without having appeared in a game for the Huskers. Head coach Scott Frost on Thursday evening mentioned him among a long list of players he thought had improved at receiver over the spring, but Houston was facing a long climb up the depth chart after spending much of the 2020 season on the scout team. - Lincoln Journal Star

Penn State redshirt sophomore tight end Zack Kuntz entered the transfer portal as a graduate transfer on Wednesday afternoon, according to 247Sports. Kuntz, a former four-star recruit in the Class of 2018, according to 247Sports, appeared in seven games for the Nittany Lions last season but didn't catch a single pass. He was listed second on the depth chart, along with freshman tight end Theo Johnson, toward the end of the year after star redshirt junior tight end Pat Freiermuth underwent season-ending shoulder surgery in November. The 6-foot-7, 258-pound Camp Hill native arrived at Penn State as the eighth-best player in the Nittany Lions' sixth-ranked 2018 recruiting class. Kuntz came in with Freiermuth and was the higher-rated player of the duo. In his three years with the program, Kuntz appeared in 21 games, totaling three receptions for 26 yards. - Centre Times

Darriel "DJ" Mack Jr. remains in Florida, but he's coming home later this month to stay. The former Norview High star, who spent the past three seasons at Central Florida, announced last month that he's transferring to Old Dominion. Mack, the 2016 Abe Goldblatt All-Tidewater Player of the Year, will have two years of eligibility. Mack, 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, spent his freshman season on the scout team at UCF. He had his coming-out party as a redshirt freshman when he played in 10 games, including three starts. A former Penn State football player was charged Thursday after a university police officer said he found marijuana in Slade's dorm room. Former Nittany Lion running back Ricky Slade Jr., 20, was accused of owning the two bags of marijuana and the grinder found in the room, according to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Penn State police. The investigation began in February after police "smelled an overwhelming odor of marijuana" coming from Slade's room, police wrote. Officers found the marijuana after obtaining a search warrant. Two others - Jaid'n Payne, 20, of Virginia, and Tray Douglas, 20, of Virginia - were accused of having marijuana in their pockets. A defense lawyer was not listed for either Slade, Payne or Douglas. Slade transferred to Old Dominion earlier this year. The Monarchs declined to comment through a spokesperson. - Centre Times

Old Dominion University will cancel the fall athletic season because of the coronavirus pandemic, President John R. Broderick announced Monday. "We concluded that the season – including travel and competition – posed too great a risk for our student-athletes," President Broderick said. "I know many on and off campus will be disappointed, but we must prioritize the health and safety of our student-athletes, as well as our coaches, staff and fans." The decision was made in concert with Athletic Director Wood Selig, coaches, medical and public health experts and state and local officials, he said. "I want to compliment Dr. Selig for being such a thoughtful colleague," President Broderick said. "I know there are schools where this discussion has been complicated by other factors, but for Wood and me, it was just about health and safety." Second-team All-Conference USA linebacker Lawrence Garner is no longer on Old Dominion's football team, a school spokesman confirmed Wednesday. Garner, who led the Monarchs with 111 tackles as a junior last season, was removed from ODU's most recent online roster. The school spokesman declined to give a reason for the player's absence. Garner, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound native of Columbus, N.J., started all 12 games last season. A team captain, he became the second player in school history with consecutive 100-tackle seasons. Garner's departure leaves the Monarchs especially thin at linebacker as they open a modified fall camp Thursday under first-year coach Ricky Rahne. Once campus reopens and classes restart, Old Dominion students might find they're sitting in class next to a legend. Former ODU quarterback Taylor Heinicke, the most decorated player in the Monarchs' short football history, plans to return to campus this fall to finish his degree. "It's kinda been a shadow over me, or a weight on my shoulders, over the last 4-5 years," Heinicke said in a telephone interview this week from his home in Georgia. "I always wanted to finish at ODU. I think that's a big thing. ODU gave me the opportunity to come there and play football for four years. ODU always treated me great, and I just want to finish there on campus and do it the right way." Heinicke, 27, has switched majors - from engineering to mathematics - since his playing days, and after completing some online courses needs about six classes to finish.

Heinicke became ODU's starting quarterback under coach Bobby Wilder in 2011 and finished his four-year career with 14,959 passing yards and 132 touchdown passes. He was an All-American and the Walter Payton Award winner as a sophomore in 2012. Heinicke was undrafted after leaving ODU, and had short stints and limited success with four NFL teams: Minnesota, New England, Houston and Carolina. He was on the St. Louis BattleHawks' roster in the XFL this season before the league folded. Heinicke is still working out and staying in shape "in case something crazy happens and I get a call." - The Virginian Pilot

During a video conference call with media Wednesday, Penn State tight end Zack Kuntz made a grandiose statement about his teammates at his position. "I think we're the most talented tight end room in the country," the redshirt sophomore said. "And there's no doubt in my mind about that." There is little doubt the player atop the Nittany Lions' tight end depth chart is one of the best in the country. But there is precious little with regard to experience on the roster after all-Big Ten honoree Pat Freiermuth. So for Kuntz's declaration to carry any legitimacy, he will have to have a breakout 2020 season. The native of the Harrisburg area is prepping himself for just that.

"I think Pat has shown what he can do, and he can do even more," Kuntz said. "And I think it's my time to kind of show what I am made of and what I'm capable of doing." One of four four-star incoming recruits for Penn State at tight end since 2018, Kuntz has added more than 30 pounds of muscle since joining the program. And after the graduation of Kittanning's Nick Bowers, the Nittany Lions have a need for a No. 2 tight end to complement Freiermuth, who in only two seasons has tied the school record for touchdown catches by a tight end (15). - Tribune Review

Harris had arguably the best season for a returner in program history as he was one of three players in Division II to record over 1,000 combined return yards. As a punt returner, his 22.9 yards per return were second only to Alabama's Jaylen Waddle. The Pflugerville product finished the 2019 season with a program record 436 yards and a touchdown on 19 returns. He broke the single season and career punt return record against Texas A&M-Kingsville on Nov. 9 with his 72-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to help the Buffs overcome a 17-point first quarter deficit. - West Texas A&M Football
