Marcus Jones admitted performing in front of scouts at Northern Illinois University Football's Pro Day was a bit nerve-wracking, but he had the words of a former teammate to fall back on. "Joel Bouagnon, guys like that, he just told me it's football at the end of the day," the now-former Huskies running back and special teams player said. "They put on pads like us. They bleed just like us. You've just got to at the end of the day have fun and play football."

Bouagnon, a former Huskies running back from Aurora, played for the Green Bay Packers, signed with the New York Jets and Detroit Lions and played for the now-defunct Salt Lake Stallions of the Alliance of American Football. Jones said he went into the day feeling that he needed to perform at a high level in at least three of the activities that were being recorded. He went on to record a 4.53 40-yard dash and recorded 24 bench press repetitions. "I think I'm a fast guy," Jones said. "I was mostly worried about the L-drill. I think I killed it in the bench and the 40." - DeKalb Daily Chronicle

Jay Johnson followed head coach Mel Tucker and fellow assistant Chris Kapilovic to Michigan State from Colorado, joining the Spartans on Thursday as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Tucker brought the 50-year-old Johnson with him to East Lansing along with offensive line coach and running game coordinator Kapilovic. Kapilovic's move was announced this week. The assistants were with Tucker for his only season in Colorado. - AP College Football

Mark Dantonio announced his retirement Tuesday, ending a 13-year run as coach in which he guided Michigan State to heights the Spartans hadn't reached in decades. The school announced Dantonio's decision in a news release. Defensive coordinator Mike Tressel will be the acting head coach while Michigan State seeks a replacement for Dantonio. Dantonio went 114-57 as Michigan State's coach and won Big Ten titles in 2010, 2013 and 2015. The last of those three seasons included a trip to the College Football Playoff, but the Spartans declined after that. They went 7-6 this past season. - AP College Football

2019 ALL-MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM (COACHES): Offensive Lineman - Jordan Steckler, Northern Illinois,...Steckler's selection to the first team marks the seventh straight season that a Huskie offensive lineman has been named first team All-MAC. The senior started 42 games during his NIU career and led the way as the Huskie offense featured a 1,000-yard rusher and a 2,000-yard passer. A native of Two Rivers, Wis. (Two Rivers HS), Steckler was also a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy and the Huskies' nominee for the National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award. "Obviously Jordan Steckler is very deserving of first team all-conference honors," Hammock said. "He went out and did everything the right way off the field, in the community and it showed in his play. He was consistent, he was physical, he was dominant, and he epitomizes what it means to be an offensive lineman at NIU." - Northern Illinois Football

DEC 2 MAC WEST DIVISION SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Northern Illinois P Matt Ference,...Northern Illinois junior punter Matt Ference (St. Louis, Mo.) had a career night and his punting ability on a rainy night in DeKalb was critical to the Huskies' ability to control field position and time of possession in their 17-14 upset win over Western Michigan on Nov. 26. Ference punted seven times for a career best 50.3 yards per punt. He had five punts of 50 or more yards, including a 63-yard punt for his longest kick since 2017. Four of his punts pinned the Broncos to start drives inside their 20-yard line as NIU's net punting average of 48.4 yards was its best of the season. He effectively “flipped the field” for the Huskies throughout the night. Ference also adeptly handled a pair of low snaps. - MAC Football

Mark Dantonio made his clearest statement yet about his future, saying he intends to be Michigan State's coach next season. Dantonio had been vague recently when the topic had come up, but Tuesday he quickly said “yes” when asked if he planned to be the coach for next season's opener against Northwestern. "I can't predict the future, but my intentions are to be the head football coach here," Dantonio said. "I've always said I live in the present, though. I've always said that." He has talked a lot lately about living in the present, and comments like that left Dantonio's future uncertain, but he seemed committed Tuesday to staying with the Spartans beyond 2019. Michigan State is coming off a 44-10 loss to Michigan last weekend and needs wins over Rutgers and Maryland to secure bowl eligibility. The Spartans have lost five games in a row.

Athletic director Bill Beekman told the Lansing State Journal recently there had been no discussion of firing Dantonio, so the focus has been on the 63-year-old coach's own wishes, and whether he wanted to return. "My father always taught me to complete circles, complete the circle," Dantonio said Tuesday. "So that's what I'm trying to do." Dantonio said Michigan State aspires to win the Big Ten title, something that's happened three times during his tenure. The most recent championship was in 2015, though, and the Spartans are 15-19 in conference play since then. - AP College Football

NIU drove the ball from its 25 to the Toledo seven-yard line on a 13-play drive to set up Richardson's game-winner. He also made all four of his PAT attempts to remain perfect on the year. Richardson leads NIU in scoring with 62 points and has made a field goal in all nine games he has attempted at least one three this year. - Mid-American Conference Football
