Redshirt sophomore quarterback Sean Chambers once again finds himself in the driver's seat to be the University of Wyoming's starting quarterback. Chambers was named the Cowboys' starting quarterback each of the previous two falls, and he made it a third when the team's post-spring depth chart was released in late-May. He has suffered season-ending injuries in each of his three seasons in Laramie, however, and is looking to end his streak of bad luck. Chambers broke his left leg on the third play from s crimmage in the 2020 season opener at Nevada. While Chambers is atop the most recent depth chart, he will still have to hold off redshirt freshman Levi Williams through the summer and fall. Williams saw nearly all the snaps in UW's six games after Chambers went down. "I think competition breeds success. I'm definitely OK with being in a competition," Chambers said. "I wouldn't expect my position to be (handed to me)." Chambers practiced during the spring and played in the spring game, completing 8 of 13 passes for 172 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Like the rest of the Cowboys, he entered the offseason with a chip on his shoulder. "It feels like some redemption. We have some stuff to prove to people," Chambers said. - Wyoming Tribune Eagle

The University of Kentucky receiving corps, looking to re-establish itself as a threat in the Southeastern Conference, has probably lost one of its top veterans for the 2021 season. Clevan Thomas, who's entering his senior season, suffered a torn ACL dur ing UK's last week of spring practice, as first reported by Nick Roush of Kentucky Sports Radio. UK spokesperson Susan Lax confirmed the report to the Herald-Leader. Outside of Josh Ali, who led UK in receiving last season, Thomas was the only returning receiver who'd caught a touchdown as a Wildcat; his lone score came in 2019, when he grabbed the first TD pass of Lynn Bowden's career against Arkansas in a 24-20 victory. He played in only four games last season, recording a single reception for 3 yards , but Thomas throughout spring practice drew praise from UK's coaching staff and teammates. New offensive coordinator Liam Coen said in March that, at that time, he was one of the only receivers playing multiple positions within the offense. "He's done s ome really nice things. Some really nice things," Coen said. "He's working his tail off. He runs great routes. He's hustling around." - Herald Leader

Sean Chambers needed a change. And if he's being honest, he contemplated whether or not it would include football. His first few seasons as Wyoming's starting quarterback have all ended the same way. One season-ending injury after another took a mental t oll on Chambers, who's lost just three times as the Cowboys' starter but has only played in 13 games over three seasons because of two fractured legs and a knee that's been surgically repaired. Chambers has already proven to be one of the Mountain West's most dynamic dual-threat signal callers when he's on the field, accounting for 22 career touchdowns in those games (10 passing, 12 rushing). But once the latest injury occurred on the first series of UW's pandemic-shortened season at Nevada last fall, C hambers admitted he started to wonder if this football thing was for him."Football was the worst thing in the world, especially college football," Chambers said. "I've had so much fun playing football, and in college, three straight season-ending injuries...I went to a dark place and thought about it." Yet Chambers joined the rest of his teammates inside War Memorial Stadium on Tuesday to go through the Cowboys' first spring practice. He's healthy again and said he feels no limitations, though he admitted it's going to take some time to work himself back into playing shape. UW had to cancel its spring last year because of the coronavirus pandemic, so those three snaps against the Wolf Pack are the only reps he's gotten in a game or practice sinc e mid-October. - Casper Star-Tribune

Sean Chambers' comeback tour will again return to War Memorial Stadium this spring. It's been a frustrating last couple of seasons for Wyoming's sophomore quarterback, whose tough luck with injuries has been well-documented. Three season-ending injuries in as many years have kept Chambers off the field far more often than he's been on it. When healthy, the 6-foot-3, 225-pounder has proven to be arguably the Mountain West's most dynamic signal callers with his legs. Chambers is averaging 6 yards per carr y and has already accounted for 12 rushing touchdowns despite playing just 13 games so far with 12 starts. Chambers is expected to be full go for spring practice, which is scheduled to begin April 6, and the top priority for the Cowboys has to be keeping it that way heading into the summer and into the fall. The same could be said for Levi Williams, who took over as the starter once Chambers went down with a leg injury three snaps into the Cowboys' pandemic-shortened season. - Casper Star-Tribune

At a game that had nearly no fans in attendance, the University of Wyoming found its own energy in the form of Sean Chambers, even though he was unable to play the majority of the game. The redshirt sophomore quarterback and team captain was knocked out with a fibula injury just three plays into Saturday's 37-34 overtime loss at Nevada. A UW spokesperson said it is potentially a broken fibula, and UW coach Craig Bohl said the injury could ultimately be season ending. It would be the third consecutive se ason Chambers has seen his season end prematurely due to leg injury, as he broke his right ankle as a true freshman again Air Force, and suffered a left knee injury against the Wolf Pack in 2019 that required surgery. Chambers was carted off the field bu t returned to the sideline, where he sat on the bench and stood on crutches for the remainder of the night without his pads or helmet in sight.Following his return to the bench, a group of wide receivers, including junior Gunner Gentry, embraced C hambers. He couldn't impact the game with his arm or his legs any longer, but Chambers was able to inspire his teammates just by being there. When the game went to overtime, it was Chambers, crutches and all, who came to midfield to call the coin toss. " It just really goes to show the kind of person Sean is. He's a big team first guy. He really will serve others before he serves himself," Gentry said. "And that really goes to show, the way he came out on the field even though he was still in a ton of pa in and still hurting, he still came out and supported us. "He was locked in the whole game. He was vocal, he was energized. Just having that, I think, was huge. Just showing us that, no matter what, you can fight through anything." - Wyoming Tribune Eagl e

Wyoming has selected its captains for the upcoming football season, which include some familiar names. Quarterback Sean Chambers, defensive end Garrett Crall, offensive lineman Keegan Cryder and linebacker Chad Muma all earned the distinction this season . UW announced its four captains Saturday. A year after being just the seventh underclassman in program history to be voted a captain, Chambers has earned the distinction for the second straight year. Chambers, a redshirt sophomore, has been the Cowboys' starting quarterback since the end of his true freshman season when healthy, going 9-2 as a starter, and his captain status may be an indication of who will take the first snap when UW opens its season at Nevada on Saturday. - Casper Star-Tribune
