Montana State freshman quarterback Tommy Mellott accounted for four touchdowns to send the Bobcats to their first title game in 38 years with a 31-17 win over South Dakota State in a Football Championship Series semifinal game on Saturday. Montana State (12-2) will make its first national championship appearance since 1984, facing North Dakota State in Frisco, Texas on Jan. 8. The Bison beat James Madison 20-14 on Friday night. Mellott was 10-of-15 passing for 233 yards and threw two touchdown passes.

He added 155 yards on the ground and two touchdowns on 34 carries. "He's a great player, runs the ball hard," South Dakota State linebacker Logan Backhaus said. "He makes the right reads and doesn't make mistakes." The Bobcats scored first when Mellott hit Nate Stewart for a 64-yard score, but South Dakota State (11-4) bounced back to take a 14-10 lead when Pierre Strong Jr. rambled 44 yards for a touchdown and Chris Oladokun connected with Jadon Janke from the 13 for the lead. Mellott ran for a 4-yard touchdown before SDSU's Cole Frahm kicked a 51-yard field goal to tie the game at 17 going into halftime. Mellott became the Bobcats main ball carrier when Isaiah Ifanse was ruled out due to injury. - Montana State/AP College Football

Tommy Mellott accounted for five touchdowns to help Montana State beat No. 1 seed Sam Houston 42-19 on Saturday night in the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs and snapped the Bearkats' 22-game win streak. Eighth-seeded Montana State (11-2), which did not participate in the spring season brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, plays South Dakota State - which upset No. 5 seed Villanova in another quarterfinal game - next weekend. The Bobcats also advanced to the semifinals in 2019 before losing 42-14 to eventual-champion North Dakota State. South Dakota State lost to the Bearkats in last May's championship game.

Mellott and Lance McCutcheon connected on a 30-yard pass and the Bearkats called for face mask and pass interference penalties before wide receiver Willie Patterson took a direct snap, rolled to his right and threw a 4-yard scoring pass to Mellott. Four plays later, after Tre Webb intercepted a pass by Sam Houston's Eric Schmid, Mellott dropped a 31-yard TD pass over the shoulder of tightly-covered Patterson's shoulder to make it 14-0 with 11:43 left in the first quarter. Mellott added a 1-yard touchdown run early in the second and scored on a 2-yard run to give the Bobcats a 28-0 lead with 7:46 left in the first half. - AP College Football

2021 ALL-BIG SKY CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM (COACHES): MLB Troy Andersen, MSU,...Andersen became the eighth Bobcat to capture Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year honors on Tuesday. He joins defensive end Brad Daly (2013), Bobby's brother, along with linebacker Jody Owens (2012), defensive end Dane Fletcher (2009), outside linebacker Roger Cooper (2004), safety and one-time MSU linebackers coach Kane Ioane (2003), Corey Widmer (1990), and outside linebacker Mark Fellows (1984). One thing Andersen doesn't have in common with most of those previous MVPs was almost constant position changes. After playing on offense for the Cats as a freshman and sophomore - he was Big Sky Freshman of the Year in 2017 as a running back and 1st Team All-Big Sky at quarterback in 2018 - he moved to outside linebacker in 2019. This season, he played middle linebacker.

According to MSU defensive coordinator Freddie Banks, Andersen's ability and willingness to move inside was like a key that unlocked the team's defensive potential. "(That move) let us play the style of defense we wanted to play," Banks said. "He plays really hard, really smart, he's the center of the defense so he makes all the checks for us. He's definitely our team's most valuable player in terms of the defense. I think (the position change) was easy for him because he played quarterback, so the transition wasn't very hard. And he's a leader by nature, I think he might have been born with that trait." - Montana State Football

He finished second in the Big Sky and ninth in the FCS in sacks (1.0 per game), and was fourth in the league and 10th nationally in tackles-for-loss (1.6 per game). - Montana State Football

The versatile linebacker is the leader of a stout Bobcat defense that has allowed just 13.2 points per game and a Big Sky-best 280.6 yards of total offense per game.
