Otis Weah had a 40-yard TD run in the fourth quarter and North Dakota rallied for a 28-17 upset over South Dakota State 28-17 on Saturday. Weah broke a couple of tackles in the backfield and cut to an open lane up the right sideline.   A different quarterback will be starting for Utah State when it travels to Laramie, Wyoming, for a road game against Wyoming this Thursday. That's because Jason Shelley has been dismissed from the team. An official press release was issued Sunday that stated Shelley has been dismissed "for a violation of team rules." USU head coach Frank Maile will not comment on the decision moving forward, the release stated. Shelley started the first four games for the Aggies and completed 51 of 99 passes (51.5 percent) for 420 yards and four touchdowns, vs. two interceptions. The University of Utah transfer also added 68 rushing yards on 33 attempts. - Herald Journal Tribune

The battle to replace Jordan Love as Utah State's starting quarterback is more intriguing than it was a few days ago. That's because the Aggies have added University of Utah transfer Jason Shelley to the 2020 roster. The addition was officially announced by USU on Monday morning, but was first reported by Patrick Kinahan of 1280 the Zone on Saturday. Shelley, who helped lead Utah to its first-ever Pac-12 South title two seasons ago, has two years of eligibility remaining. The former Lone Star (Texas) High School star spent three seasons in Salt Lake City, where he redshirted in 2017.

Shelley elected to enter the transfer portal in February after seeing limited playing time at the QB position in eight games for the Utes this past season. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound dual-threat signal caller was moved to safety prior to Utah's matchup against Texas in the Alamo Bowl. Shelley made one open-field tackle in that game. The grandson of former Utah State safety Phillip Shelley endeared himself to Utah fans during the 2018 campaign when he took over for starting QB Tyler Huntley, who broke his collarbone in a November showdown against Arizona State. Shelley started the final five games of the season and helped propel the Utes to back-to-back-to-back wins over Oregon, Colorado and BYU. The road triumph over Colorado allowed Utah to punch its ticket to the Pac-12 Championship contest. - Herald Journal Tribune

Jason Shelley, once considered a contender to be the University of Utah's starting quarterback, now is the heir apparent to Jordan Love at Utah State. The Aggies announced Monday that Shelley will join the USU program this fall as a junior and is immediately eligible. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound player out of Frisco, Texas, is the grandson of Phillip Shelley, who played safety for the Aggies in the early 1970s. Jason Shelley will likely enter as the frontrunner in what had been a four-man competition to fill the sizable shoes left by Love. One of the most heralded quarterbacks in USU history, Love was drafted and signed by the NFL's Green Bay Packers this spring and is expected to eventually take over for Aaron Rodgers.

Shelley started five games for the Utes in 2018, filling in successfully when starter Tyler Huntley went down in November with a broken collarbone. Shelley led Utah to wins vs. Oregon and at Colorado to help secure the program's first Pac-12 South title. In the regular-season finale, Shelley's 33-yard touchdown run with 1:43 left capped a 21-point fourth quarter as the Utes outlasted BYU, 35-27. - Salt Lake Tribune

Missouri State is parting ways with coach Dave Steckel, whose teams won just 13 games in five seasons. The school said Thursday a "privately-funded buyout" will pay Steckel up to $340,000 plus moving expenses. He'll get an initial $140,000 payment. Subsequent $100,000 payments in January 2021 and January 2022 will depend on whether Steckel finds a new coaching job, how much he makes and when he is hired. The Bears were 13-42 under Steckel, who previously served as defensive coordinator for Gary Pinkel at Missouri. Missouri State athletic director Kyle Moats and Steckel met Nov. 27 to discuss the program. Moats announced at that time that the university intended to honor Steckel's contract through the 2021 season. Moats said a national search for a new coach will begin immediately. - AP College Football
