  09/17/19 - Kevin JarvisrSr/2022, Michigan State, 6-5, 317 (DS#32 OG) + More +

Michigan State offensive lineman Kevin Jarvis is expected to miss 6-7 weeks with an undisclosed injury. Coach Mark Dantonio didn't disclose the specifics of the injury. He said Jarvis isn't lost for the season, but he has been removed from the depth chart after starting the first three games this season at left tackle. Senior Tyler Higby is now listed as the starting left tackle for Saturday's game at Northwestern. The Spartans have also been without senior tackle Cole Chewins, who has dealt with back issues. Dantonio said Chewins and tackle AJ Arcuri are day-to-day. Neither is listed on the offensive line depth chart. - AP College Football

Darrell Stewart had 10 catches for 185 yards, and No. 19 Michigan State's maligned offense scored touchdowns on its first three drives on the way to a 51-17 win over Western Michigan on Saturday night that gave coach Mark Dantonio a share of the school record for victories. Dantonio won his 109th game for the Spartans, matching Duffy Daugherty's mark. Michigan State (2-0) looked a lot sharper on offense than in its opener against Tulsa. Brian Lewerke threw for 314 yards and three touchdowns, and Elijah Collins had 192 yards on 17 carries.

Dantonio called his team out during the week for its uneven performance in the opener, and the Spartans appeared to get the message. On the first offensive play, Lewerke found an open Stewart for a 33-yard gain. Michigan State opened the scoring on a 2-yard pass from Lewerke to Matt Dotson after only 94 seconds. La'Darius Jefferson added a 2-yard touchdown run, and Stewart scored on a 42-yard reception later in the first quarter to make it 21-0. WMU (1-1) scored in the second quarter on a 14-yard pass from Jon Wassink to Giovanni Ricci, but the Broncos were down 31-7 at halftime. - AP College Football

Raequan Williams knocked the ball out, and Kenny Willekes recovered it in the end zone. When Michigan State's defensive linemen are playing like this, the Spartans' offense has plenty of margin for error. Willekes recovered two fumbles, including one for a touchdown, and No. 18 Michigan State manhandled Tulsa 28-7 on Friday night. Willekes, back on the field after breaking his leg in last season's Redbox Bowl, was part of a swarming Michigan State defense that held the Golden Hurricane to minus-73 yards rushing.

The touchdown by Willekes came after he and Williams sacked Zach Smith near the goal line. The ball came free, and Willekes came up with it to put Michigan State up 22-0. "Thank you Raequan for my first touchdown," Willekes said. "It speaks to how, I think, the chemistry on our defense, how much work we put in this offseason - you see how dominant we are when we play together, we all do our job." The Spartans (1-0) still had their problems offensively, but that made little difference on this night. - AP College Football

Gus Malzahn perked up when he mentioned the name of one of Auburn's running back options this fall. It was back in July at SEC Media Days, and Malzahn was meeting with the local media in a suite at the Wynfrey in Hoover shortly before he took the stage in the main room. That's when he brought up "the Harold Joiner factor." "His skillset is unique," Malzahn said. "And it's different."

The former four-star Mountain Brook prospect was a non-factor as a true freshman last season, when he redshirted while appearing in just two games and finished the season with three carries for 9 yards and a touchdown. Malzahn hopes to establish a bigger role for him this fall as the Tigers try to reestablish their presence on the ground following a disappointing and uncharacteristic season running the ball in 2018. "Harold Joiner will, I really believe, be a big part of what our plans are," Malzahn said. "He's very unique from the standpoint that he can do a lot of different things. We will have a specific plan for him during fall camp and this season. His versatility gives us a lot of freedom." - Birmingham News
