  11/27/20 - Naquan JonesrSr/2021, Michigan State, 6-3, 313 (DS#18 DT) + More +

Now in his fifth year in the program, odds are Jones doesn't take advantage of the free season of eligibility and heads to the NFL Draft in the spring. He's likely to get selected, and until then, Tucker and his staff will do all they can to help Jones get there. "Naquan is a young man I've spent quite bit of time with, one-on-one, you know just talking to him," Tucker said. "And Coach (Ron) Burton does an outstanding job coaching him and has a good relationship with him. You know, Naquan, he's a people person and he's obviously a big guy that's got tremendous talent. For his size he moves very well, has got initial quickness, and he's a guy that can do a lot of things. "What I talk to him about is consistency and performance. That's how you become successful. It's day-in and day-out, in practice, the weight room, all those things and you carry it over into the game. "He wants to be a good player, he wants to be a consistent player, and I see him working towards that and we're helping him do that." - Detroit News

  11/27/20 - Naquan JonesrSr/2021, Michigan State, 6-3, 313 (DS#18 DT) + More +

Michigan State football's Naquan Jones said he had COVID-19 and has recovered. The senior defensive tackle is the second Spartan athlete to announce contracting the coronavirus, and Jones said it has had a ripple effect across his family. Offensive lineman Matt Carrick told The Canton Repository in August he had COVID-19 in July. "I've lost family members to COVID, and that's something that my family takes very serious…," Jones said Tuesday. "It was very stressful for my family, so I did have a few concerns. But at the end of the day, I love to play football. MSU was doing a great job with their safety measures, and I felt safe. So that thought kind of comes out of my head."

Jones said he was affected by COVID-19 shortly before the season began and experienced minor symptoms, including the loss of smell for two days before he "felt perfectly fine" again. He said he went and ran in an open field near his apartment to remain in shape while sitting out 14 days before returning to the team. "I went to go run with a mask on, and do what I could do outside, not being around people to spread COVID obviously," Jones said. "But I wanted to stay in a decent amount of shape before I had to go put pads on to play a game." - Lansing State Journal

Eighteen Mississippi State players have left the program in some form or fashion since Mike Leach became coach of the Bulldogs in January. Junior wide receiver Powers Warren became the latest to leave Thursday after he reportedly entered the transfer portal. Warren, who played at Minnetonka High School in Minnesota, only appeared in six games at Mississippi State. This was his fourth season. Fifteen of the 18 departed players are gone for good. Only three - safety Marcus Murphy, cornerback Tyler Williams and defensive tackle Nathan Pickering - could come back next season after opting out of the remainder of the 2020 season. - The Dispatch

With opt-outs of top players around the country, Simmons continues to make an impression on the field. The senior posted a career-high 14 tackles against the Hoosiers' speed spread offense. It is his effort and leadership in an otherwise lost season that will stand out to pro scouts come April's NFL draft. - Lansing State Journal

Michigan State linebacker Marcel Lewis has entered the transfer portal, the program confirmed Monday. The redshirt freshman opted out of the 2020 season back on Aug. 8, only to change his mind and opt back in just before the Big Ten announced an eight-game season. Lewis was not dressed for any of Michigan State's first four games this season after he appeared in three games in 2019 as a true freshman. The former three-star prospect from Chippewa Valley is the first Michigan State player to enter the portal this season.

Lewis was one of four Michigan State players to opt out of the season before the Big Ten originally pulled the plug on Aug. 11. Also choosing to not play were senior defensive end Jacub Panasiuk, senior offensive lineman Jordan Reid and freshman offensive lineman Justin Stevens. Panasiuk opted back in at the start of preseason camp and has started all four games while Reid and Stevens have remained out. - Detroit News

Jarek Broussard had the most rushing yards by a player in his first game for Colorado, going for 187 yards and three touchdowns in a 48-42 win over UCLA. The freshman tailback had the third-best rushing day by a player making his starting debut. Mike Pritchard in 1990 and Billy Waddy in 1973 each had over 200 yards in their first starts. - AP College Football

  11/07/20 - Jarek BroussardSr/2023, Michigan State, 5-08, 192 (DS#67 RB) + More +

Tailback Jarek Broussard scored three times in his first start, Colorado's defense produced two big fourth-down stops in the final quarter and the Buffaloes opened the Karl Dorrell Era by holding off UCLA 48-42 on Saturday night. It was far from easy even after amassing an early 28-point lead. UCLA cut the deficit to 48-42 with 1:45 remaining on a 9-yard TD catch by Mike Martinez. But the onside kick was recovered by Colorado's Dimitri Stanley and the Buffaloes (1-0) ran out the clock. Broussard finished with 187 yards rushing as the Buffaloes won their fifth straight season opener. The game was played in front of 554 fans made up of family and friends due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The Buffaloes built a 28-point lead late in the first half on mistake-prone UCLA (0-1), which turned the ball over four times before halftime that Colorado cashed into 21 points. But the Bruins shook off the rocky start and scored 21 straight to turn what looked to be a rout into a back-and-forth encounter. There were no punts in the second half, but there were two blocked field goals by UCLA and Colorado made a pair of fourth-down stops. The crucial one was stuffing UCLA on fourth-and-1 at the Colorado 30 with 13:13 remaining and leading 45-35. Sam Noyer, a graduate senior all set to leave before being re-recruited by the new coaching staff, efficiently ran the offense. He threw for 257 yards and a score. He also ran for another. - AP College Football

  11/06/20 - Jarek BroussardSr/2023, Michigan State, 5-08, 192 (DS#67 RB) + More +

Sophomore tailback Jarek Broussard was routinely praised by Colorado coaches and players during the past few weeks as the Buffaloes went through preseason camp. It appears Broussard was impressive enough to earn his first career start. On Monday, the Buffs released their depth chart for Saturday's opener against UCLA (5 p.m., TV: ESPN2), and it included Broussard as the No.1 tailback. Last year's leading rusher, junior Alex Fontenot, is on the injury list with an undisclosed injury, and Broussard appears to have earned the right to take the first snaps against the Bruins.

Now in his third year with the Buffs, Broussard has yet to play a game at CU, as he redshirted in 2018 and missed the 2019 season with a knee injury. The 5-foot-9, 185-pound sophomore from Dallas flashed skills in practice, however, that reminded running backs coach Darian Hagan of former CU star Rodney Stewart - the third-leading rusher in program history. "Broussard has come a long way," Hagan said last week. "He's playing with a lot of confidence. He knows exactly what he's doing. And he brings a different element to the game. He's a real jitterbug. He's a guy that he can take it to the house, he can make guys miss in the open field. That's the guy that we've been missing. We've been missing a back like that." - Daily Camera

Temple quarterback Anthony Russo will miss his second straight game because of a shoulder injury. Coach Rod Carey announced that Russo won't play against SMU at noon Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field against. Russo, a redshirt senior, has made 26 career starts. He had 17 consecutive starts before missing Saturday's 38-3 loss at Tulane. "Could he be ready by Saturday? I think there's probably an outside opportunity for that, physically. But certainly he would not have practiced all week and that can't happen," said Carey, whose team is 1-3 overall and in the American Athletic Conference. (SMU is 6-1, 3-1.) "He is obviously disappointed, but my first job is to make sure that the team we field out there is safe, and I don't think that would be a proper situation." Carey said Russo has an AC joint injury. "It is really a pain threshold thing, not a structural thing, but it affects his range of motion, it is on his throwing arm, so it is a big deal," Carey said. - Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News

Kay'Ron Adams may have earned himself a bigger role in Rutgers' offense right before a trip home. Adams was one of the only things that worked for the Scarlet Knights in their 37-21 loss to No. 17 Indiana on Saturday at SHI Stadium in Piscataway. He had a team-leading 62 yards on five carries, and his 37-yard touchdown run in the third quarter gave Rutgers a shot at a second-half rally before the Hoosiers pulled away. Adams' strong performance in limited snaps came while Isaih Pacheco was stymied (nine carries for 24 yards) and Aaron Young saw his touches drop off from the season-opening win at Michigan State (where Adams saw no touches). Could that production earn Adams, an Ohio native, more work in next Saturday's trip to No. 3 Ohio State? "I thought Kay'Ron gave us a little spark, that's for sure," coach Greg Schiano said. "I thought Isaih ran hard, I thought Aaron ran hard, but sometimes guys get a little groove going." "We have real confidence in all of our running backs. If somebody's got a hot hand, we let them roll. If we're looking for a spark, we know we have other good players and we're going to let them play." - Star Ledger

Watching from the press box live on Saturday, Antjuan Simmons stood out. Watching the replay of the television broadcast, he was even better. His batted pass in the end zone late in the second quarter is arguably the play of the game. He recognized what was coming and had the athleticism to get close enough to the throw to tip it away. That was a four-point swing in what turned out to be a three-point win. Simmons was in on a number of consequential defensive plays, both against the run and even in pass coverage against a tight end. He wasn't alone in setting the tone, however. That first defensive stand by MSU's defensive line - with Jacub Panasiuk coming through unblocked to stop the run, Naquan Jones diving at Joe Milton's ankles and then Panasiuk again coming through the middle for the pressure and to force a punt. That's the moment. Right there, it was clear the Spartans were in the fight and weren't going to be steamrolled by Michigan. - Lansing State Journal

Kenneth Walker III ran for three touchdowns, Gavin Holmes scored on a 32-yard interception and Wake Forest extended its winning streak to four, overpowering Syracuse 38-14 Saturday. Walker carried 16 times for 79 yards. He scored on runs of 1, 20 and 5 yards for the Demon Deacons (4-2, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference.) The loss was the fourth straight for the Orange (1-6, 1-5). Sam Hartman completed 19 of 33 for 250 yards and one touchdown, an 81-yard pass play to Jaquarii Roberson, who caught seven passes for 130 yards. Christian Beal-Smith ran for 87 yards.

Wake Forest, which led 17-7 at the half, blew the game open in the third quarter. Hartman connected with Roberson and just nine seconds later Holmes's interception return made it 31-7. Walker's 5-yard scoring run put the game on ice. The pick six was the third of the season for the Demon Deacons, tied for the nation's best, and the team's 11th interception of the year, which leads college football. Rex Culpepper was 15 of 27 for just 85 yards and one touchdown for Syracuse, a 21-yard connection with Nykeim Johnson, who set up the Syracuse score with a 26-yard punt return. He also threw two interceptions. Cooper Lutz, making the first start of his career, had 83 yards. - Wake Forest/AP College Football

Carey said on Monday that quarterback Anthony Russo was having an MRI on his throwing shoulder. While the team didn't announce the results of the MRI, Carey, on Tuesday in a statement to The Inquirer, said, "Anthony did not practice today, hope to have him back on the field tomorrow." Russo, a right-handed thrower, attempted 63 passes in Saturday's loss at Memphis. As far as Temple's depth chart is concerned, the backup quarterback is listed as Trad Beatty or Re-al Mitchell. Both are redshirt sophomores. Mitchell is a transfer from Iowa State. Neither has seen action this season. - Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News
