  05/17/22 - Braiden McGregorSr/2024, Michigan, 6-5, 257 (DS#14 DE) + More +

Braiden McGregor and the rest of Michigan's defensive ends have heard the offseason chatter. With Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo both gone, electing to declare for the NFL, a couple of spots have opened up on the edge. And perhaps just as many questions. "That's the been the thing in our room, because everyone's talking about that," McGregor, who enters his redshirt sophomore season this fall, told MLive on Saturday at the Karsen Barnhart-hosted football camp for kids. "(They're saying) that's a huge question mark, and it's not a question mark. We'll be all right." Together, Hutchinson and Ojabo accounted for nearly three out of every four sacks Michigan recorded in 2021 (they combined for 25 of the team's 34), forming one of the best edge-rushing duos in the country.

Filling that hole will be difficult, maybe even impossible, but Michigan's first-year defensive coordinator (Jesse Minter) and defensive line coach (Mike Elston) both agree that production will need to come from more than two guys. Which has McGregor, who came to Michigan as a traditional end and converted to a stand-up edge rusher last year, salivating at all the possibilities. "I'm more of a second-and-long, third-down, dime-package (player)," McGregor said. "That's what I'm doing this year, and I love that role. I've talked to (David) Ojabo about it...and it's just awesome." - Ann Arbor News

  05/09/22 - J.J. McCarthyJr/2024, Michigan, 6-3, 219 (DS#4 QB) + More +

Can you believe Jim Harbaugh almost left Stanford for Kansas several years back? Good career non-move. Now, he's in charge of the defending Big Ten champion, which reached the College Football Playoff for the first time. The offense welcomes back both Cade McNamara and former News-Gazette All-State Player of the Year J.J. McCarthy at quarterback. Lots of options for Harbaugh. The defense needs to replace the No. 2 pick in the NFL draft, Aidan Hutchinson. Bottom line? The offense will be better and the defense should drop off. - News Gazette Tribune

  05/07/22 - Jack TuttlerSr/2025, Michigan, 6-3, 211 (DS#999 QB) + More +

IU's quarterbacks combined to throw 15 interceptions in 12 games, the most by any team in the Big Ten. With Penix transferring to Washington, IU will enter fall camp with the starting quarterback job still up in the air. "The competition ahead for that position, that really excites me, and I'm anxious to see these guys," Allen said. "They've been working extremely hard. So, yeah, it's a full room, a competitive room. Excited to see how it's going to make each other better."

Jack Tuttle and Missouri transfer Connor Bazelak are two favorites to win the job, based on their experience. Tuttle went 0-2 last season as a starter, passing for 423 yards with two TDs and five interceptions. Bazelak possesses a strong arm and an ability to make plays downfield, but like Tuttle, needs to cut down on mistakes. Last season at Missouri, Bazelak passed for 2,548 yards with 16 TDs and 11 interceptions, with three 300-yard games. - Herald Bulletin

  05/05/22 - Wesley WalkerrSr/2025, Michigan, 5-11, 195 (DS#59 SS) + More +

Georgia Tech transfer Wesley Walker and Ohio State transfer Andre Turrentine, who are former Ensworth High School teammates, committed to Tennessee. Both mostly play safety or nickelback, but they could get a chance at cornerback. A true cornerback was preferred. But MTSU's Quincy Riley, an All-Conference USA performer, committed to Louisville after considering UT. There aren't many cornerbacks left in the portal better than what UT already has, but it might try to add one. - Knoxville News Sentinel

Poised for a 2022 standout season: DE Mike Morris, senior. The 6-foot-6, 278-pound Morris will have a lot of chances to make plays from a position that produced NFL prospects Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo last year. Morris had 17 tackles in 14 games last season. - AP College Football

  04/26/22 - Cam GooderSr/2024, Michigan, 6-0, 326 (DS#54 DT) + More +

Michigan football has some help headed its way on the defensive side of the ball. Cam Goode, a 6-foot-2, 315-pound nose tackle in the transfer portal, plans to join the team this summer, he announced Friday evening. Goode spent the last three seasons at the University of Central Florida, where he appeared in 33 games and started five from 2019 to 2021. He was a big part of the Knights' rotation last year and became a proven disruptor over the middle.

In 13 games, Goode led UFC with four forced fumbles to go along with his 24 tackles (four for a loss), three sacks, interception and three pass breakups. He only started three times, but he made more than made up for it when he got into the game. Among Goode's highlights last season: Forcing two fumbles in a loss to Navy, an interception, sack and quarterback hurry in a blowout win over UConn, and a sack and two hurries in UCF's Gasparilla Bowl win over Florida. - Ann Arbor News

  04/26/22 - A.J. BarnerSr/2024, Michigan, 6-6, 251 (DS#7 TE) + More +

A.J. Barner put together a solid spring camp to solidify his hold on the starting job at tight end heading into the 2022 season. Barner displayed his athletic ability with a 76-yard catch-and-run touchdown against Idaho and finished 2021 with 14 catches for 162 yards and TDs. A former two-way standout at linebacker and tight end out of Aurora, Ohio, the 6-foot-6, 251-pound Barner has worked on other aspects of his game, such as run blocking, to become a more complete tight end. "I'm a guy who will take care of my business in the run game and be physical up front," Barnes said. "Being in that leadership role and being vocal." - Herald Bulletin

  04/25/22 - Olusegun OluwatimirSr/2023, Michigan, 6-3, 309 (DS#5 C) + More +

By the time spring football started in late February, center Olu Oluwatimi already knew the playbook and all the calls. Considering Oluwatimi, a 6-foot-3, 310-pound grad transfer from Virginia who enrolled in January, that's a significant amount of learning in such a short amount of time. He acclimated quickly to his new team and environment and said his transition to Michigan was smooth. It isn't always easy for a player to transfer in, be the new guy and build relationships with teammates he has only just met.

But it didn't take long for Oluwatimi, a finalist last year for the Rimington Award given to the nation's best center, to make an impression. "One of the first days we put on pads, one-on-one pass rush, we saw him lock up some of our better D-linemen," left tackle Ryan Hayes said recently. "We go, 'Yeah, this guy is gonna be pretty good for us.' We knew early. He's gonna bring a lot of experience, a lot of maturity to our group." Running back Blake Corum smiled as he listened to Hayes' assessment. He also wanted to chime in on Oluwatimi, who is projected to be Michigan's starting center this fall. "One of the linebackers told me Olu got hold of him one practice, and the grip he had on him, he couldn't get out of it," Corum said. "He's a strong guy." Oluwatimi entered the NCAA's transfer portal in December after Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall stepped down. He has one year of eligibility, his bonus COVID-19 year, remaining. - Detroit News

  03/05/22 - Aidan HutchinsonSr/2022, Michigan, 6-7, 268 (DS#1 DE) + More +

Aidan Hutchinson stepped to the mic for his press conference here at the NFL Scouting Combine, then immediately faced a barrage of questions about his arm length right off the top. He didn't seem to like it very much. "Um, yeah, there might be questions along that," the star Michigan pass rusher said. "I guess we'll see. But I'm not too worried about it. I'm very confident in my ability despite how long I am or whatever you say. So it doesn't really matter to me." It might not matter to Hutchinson, who just set the Michigan single-season sack record, although it might to NFL teams. The reigning Heisman Trophy finalist weighed in at 6-foot-7 and 260 pounds on Saturday, but with a wingspan of just 32 1/8 inches.

That was second-shortest among all the edge rushers at the combine, ahead of only Texas A&M's Tyree Johnson (30 7/8), and would make him the shortest-armed pass rusher in Detroit. Romeo Okwara measured in at 34 1/8 inches at his combine, while Trey Flowers was 34 2/8, Julian Okwara was 34 3/8 and Austin Bryant was 34 5/8. The Lions hold the No. 2 overall pick in this year's draft, and while a quarterback (like Malik Willis) or safety (like Kyle Hamilton) could enter the picture, the club seems far more likely to use the pick to juice its long-suffering pass rush. - Ann Arbor News

2021 ALL-SUN BELT FIRST TEAM (COACHES): DL - Josaiah Stewart, Coastal Carolina (Fr., DL - Everett, Mass.),...Grossing his first All-Sun Belt postseason honor, Stewart made an immediate impact for the Chants' defense this season, as he shattered the CCU single-season sacks record of 10.5 sacks set by consensus All-American and current Philadelphia Eagle Tarron Jackson in 2019 with 12.5 sacks in his first collegiate season this year. Named to the 2021 Ted Hendricks Award Final Watch List last week, which honors the top defensive end in college football, Stewart finished the regular season with 15.5 tackles-for-loss which is the second-most in a single season in CCU history. His 12.5 sacks lead the Sun Belt, rank fourth nationally, and are the most by a true freshman in all of FBS.

His 12.5 sacks are also just one shy of the Sun Belt single-season record of 13.5 sacks. His 15.5 tackles-for-loss are the most by a true freshman nationally this year, rank fourth in the Sun Belt on the season, and is just 1.0 shy of the school single-season record of 16.0. In only his second game as a Chant, Stewart registered 3.5 sacks in a win over Kansas (Sept. 10) to set CCU's single-game sacks record. He topped that with 4.0 sacks in the road win at Georgia Southern (Nov. 6) and also set a new CCU single-game tackles-for-loss record with 5.0 versus the Eagles. While splitting time at defensive end this season, he has 42 total tackles, including a career-high eight stops twice. He has also forced three fumbles, which is tied for second in the conference. In Sun Belt play, his 12.0 tackles-for-loss and 9.0 sacks both led the league. - Coastal Carolina Football

  12/14/21 - Aidan HutchinsonSr/2022, Michigan, 6-7, 268 (DS#1 DE) + More +

Aidan Hutchinson of Michigan won the Lott IMPACT Trophy as the college defensive player having the biggest influence on his team Sunday night. The senior defensive end earned the honor a night after finishing runner-up for the Heisman Trophy. Hall of Fame safety Ronnie Lott presented Hutchinson with the award at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach. It goes to a player with strong academic work, community involvement and team leadership. Hutchinson set a Michigan season record with 14 sacks in leading the Wolverines to a 12-1 record and the Big Ten title.

He's the second Wolverines player to win the Lott Trophy, joining Jabrill Peppers in 2016. Michigan will receive $25,000 for its general scholarship fund. Hutchinson beat out Devin Lloyd of Utah and Georgia teammates Nakobe Dean and Jordan Davis. Each of those schools will receive $5,000 for their scholarship fund. Hutchinson and the second-ranked Wolverines will play No. 3 Georgia in the College Football Playoff semifinals on Dec. 31 in Miami. A national panel of more than 300 former college coaches, players and media members voted on the award. - AP College Football
