Six years after being offered a scholarship, defensive back Malik Hausman is joining the University of Hawaii football team this summer. "It's been a long wait for me," said Hausman, who is making the move as a graduate transfer from the University of Arizona. While Hausman is expected to compete at cornerback and nickelback this coming season, the Rainbow Warriors also have secured three pledges for next year's recruiting class.

Quarterback John-Keawe Sagapolutele of Punahou School, wideout Mason Muaau of Saint Louis School and offensive lineman Josiah Timoteo of Waianae have accepted 2023 scholarship offers. In 2016, UH assistant coach Abraham Elimimian recruited Hausman, who was a junior at Las Vegas' Bishop Gorman High at the time. Hausman eventually committed to Arizona. After the 2021 season, during which he played in nine games, Hausman entered the NCAA transfer portal. After earning an invitation to rookie minicamp, former University of Hawaii receiver Jared Smart has signed a free agent deal with the NFL's Arizona Cardinals. Smart was not selected in April's 2022 NFL Draft but was one of a handful of players with Hawaii ties to earn a minicamp invite. After a standout career at Laney College in California, Smart signed with the Rainbow Warriors prior to the 2019 season and immediately earned a starting spot. The University of Hawaii football team's 2022 recruiting class now includes a protection plan. Offensive tackle Luke Felix-Fualalo, who grew up in Australia and played high school football in California, is transferring from the University of Utah and will join the Rainbow Warriors next month. "In all honesty, it's much closer to home," said Felix-Fualalo, noting Hawaii and Australia "share a lot of similarities - the fauna, the beaches. Speaking to the coaching staff, I felt (the team) was a family. And I actually have family in the islands. I know a few people on the team. Putting it all together, it felt like the best move." A former 4-star pass rusher who played three seasons at Arkansas is transferring to the University of Hawaii football team. Mataio Soli told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser he will join the Rainbow Warriors this summer and have two seasons of NCAA eligibility remaining. "It just felt like the best fit for me," said Soli, who visited UH a week ago. "I had a great time. I felt (Hawaii) had a family atmosphere...I felt I was already on the team when I got there." Soli, who is 6 feet 4 and 235 pounds, was a standout defender at Georgia's Douglas County High. As a junior, he amassed 18 sacks. As a senior in 2018, he made 84 tackles, including 22.5 sacks. Rivals and 247Sports gave him 4-star ratings; 247Sports listed Soli as the nation's 16th-best weak-side end. Dedrick Parson ran for 161 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries and Hawaii scored three times on plays of 75 yards or longer on Saturday night to beat New Mexico State 48-34. Calvin Turner Jr. had six carries for 94 yards and a touchdown and added five receptions for 30 yards for Hawaii (4-4) and freshman Brayden Schager, making his third consecutive start in place of injured Chevan Cordeiro (shoulder), completed 25 of 29 passes for 219 yards. Juwan Price scored for New Mexico State (1-7) on 46-yard run to tie it at 27-all but on the next play from scrimmage Turner took a handoff, cut left to the sideline and raced untouched for the score to give Hawaii the lead for good with 1:18 left in the third quarter.

About four minutes later, Darius Muasau returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown to make it 41-27. Parson scored on runs on 9 yards and 1 yard and Khoury Bethley had a 79-yard pick-6 to help the Rainbow Warriors take a 24-3 lead midway through the second quarter. Juwan Price had a 56-yard TD run and Ethan Albertson kicked a 44-yard field to trim New Mexico State's deficit to 24-10 at halftime. Hugh Nelson II intercepted a pass at Hawaii's 2-yard line with 9 seconds left after Matthew Shipley kicked a tiebreaking 33-yard field goal with 3:33 remaining, and the Rainbow Warriors rallied to beat No. 18 Fresno State 27-24 Saturday night. Hawaii (3-3, 1-1 Mountain West) forced six turnovers to record their first win over a ranked opponent since beating No. 19 Nevada 27-21 on Oct. 16, 2010.

Fresno State (4-2, 1-1) racked up 505 yards of total offense, including 388 passing from Jake Haener, who entered the game as the FBS leader in passing yards. He finished 28-of-50 passing but was intercepted four times - three times inside Hawaii's 10-yard line. The last stalled a 13-play drive on first and 10 from the 11-yard line. Haener's pass bounced off receiver Ty Jones' hands right to Nelson, who fell to the ground with the ball to preserve the win. Hawaii ran out the clock with a trio of QB sneaks by running back Calvin Turner Jr. He fumbled the last one, but Hawaii recovered at its 2-yard line as the clock expired. - Hawaii/AP College Football

The University of Hawaii football coaches reviewed video, talked to Iowa State coaches, and reviewed more video. If this were a Yelp evaluation, safety Chima Azunna was deserving of a 5-star rating for tackling. In February, Azunna signed a scholarship agreement with UH to solidify his transfer from Iowa State. He is one of 19 Rainbow Warriors who previously played at an NCAA Division I school. Eight Division I transfers are part of the 2021 recruiting class. "Really, what put us onto (Azunna) was his ability to tackle," said Trent Figg, associate head coach of the defense, who works primarily with the safeties. "He's a great tackler in the open field. He did a great job at Iowa State. He's a physical player."

In nine games in 2020, the Warriors relinquished 18 pass plays of 25-plus yards, and 44 of at least 15 yards. Opponents averaged 12.5 yards per third-down completion. The Warriors also were burned for 21 rushes of 20-plus yards. They ceded an average of 5.0 yards on first-down runs. "We have to tackle in the secondary," Figg said. "When you look at all the big-play runs, all big-play touchdowns, it all comes down to somebody in the secondary probably missed a tackle. A defensive lineman mis-fitted? Who cares? A linebacker mis-fitted? Who cares? We've got to tackle. A huge emphasis for us has been tackling in the back end so we can eliminate the big-play touchdown runs." - Honolulu Advertiser

The training camp grind for the University of Hawaii football team is at a machine like form as the morning workouts have had the intensity dialed up as depth chart competitions heat up less than three weeks away from kickoff at UCLA. As for the quarterback position, fourth year sophomore Chevan Cordeiro enters 2021 as the unquestioned signal caller, having already posted 41-hundred yards of total offense with 38 touchdowns in 25 career games. With added size and a second year of familiarity to the playbook under head coach Todd Graham, expectations are high for the Saint Louis graduate. Clarity on the competition for the number two position at QB cleared up this week, with true freshman Brayden Schager taking those snaps prior to the departure of Boone Abbot who announced his intention to transfer on Tuesday.

According to offensive coordinator Bo Graham, the 2021 graduate of Highland Park High School in Dallas, Texas has earned the trust of the offense in the ultra important role of being next in line. "Yeah, Brayden has stepped up as the number-2 guy. Really big arm. I think he's a really smart player. He's a guy that can process information quickly. I think that is a big part of what we do and couldn't be more proud of his development. In the last couple weeks we've challenged him and he's really stepped up," said Graham. As a senior in high school, Schager led Highland Park to an undefeated regular season and district title, en-route to being named the District 7-5A Most Valuable Player after completing 62 percent of his attempts for 3,102 yards and 24 touchdowns to go with nine rushing scores. - Khon2.com
