Once expected to compete for the starting job throughout preseason practice, Johnson became LSU's quarterback after Myles Brennan broke his left arm earlier this week while preparing for a fishing trip. The injury required surgery Tuesday morning, and while the timeline for Brennan's recovery remains unclear, Johnson will enter the season as LSU's starter. Brennan's injury immediately affects the Tigers' depth, but his absence will give Johnson extra first-team reps, more opportunities to establish connections with receivers and time to work with new offensive coordinator Jake Peetz. All of that could help Johnson throughout his sophomore year. - Baton Rouge Advocate

The day after Myles Brennan suffered a left arm injury that required surgery, coach Ed Orgeron confirmed the suspected: LSU will start sophomore Max Johnson at quarterback, ending the competition that would have taken place between Brennan and Johnson throughout preseason camp. Orgeron had anticipated LSU would determine its starter the week before its season opener Sept. 4 against UCLA, but Brennan broke a bone in his left arm Monday morning, according to a source. Orgeron said during his weekly appearance on WNXX-FM, 104.5 that Brennan underwent surgery Tuesday.

"Surgery went really well," Brennan later wrote on social media. "Thank y'all for all the prayers. God's got me." The injury left LSU with two scholarship quarterbacks - Johnson and freshman Garrett Nussmeier - when preseason practice starts Friday. Nussmeier will become LSU's primary backup while freshman walk-on Matt O'Dowd gets elevated to third string, Orgeron said. "Obviously, Max is going to be our starter, but he's got to have a great camp," Orgeron said. "The depth chart is etched in sand. He knows he's got to perform, but I believe in Max, just like I believe in Myles. I think we've got us a great quarterback, a great championship quarterback." As Orgeron spoke further about moving forward with two healthy scholarship quarterbacks, he recalled the 2018 season, using the past as a reason to find confidence in the future. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Hopes of a revitalized Kentucky football offense have been dealt a significant injury blow with just more than six weeks before the 2021 season opener. Junior tight end Keaton Upshaw could miss the entire 2021 season with an injury suffered in summer conditioning, UK coach Mark Stoops confirmed during the Wildcats' stop at SEC Media Days Tuesday. Stoops did not provide specifics on the injury but acknowledged it is a significant one. "Traditionally speaking, that is a season-ending injury, but we'll see and we need to confirm that," Stoops said. "I don't have any more news other than that at this point. Saw him this morning. Just feel terrible for him. I know he's very down. He's had a remarkable summer and really has been on point working extremely hard, like all of the guys, and really excited about the year. I'm just disappointed for him." Even as Kentucky's passing game struggled to find any momentum last season, Upshaw emerged as one of the team's most promising pass-catchers. He finished the season with 16 catches for 198 yards and three touchdowns, but 11 of those catches came in the final five games. - Courier Journal

Sun Belt Football Media Day is only a few days away, on Thursday, July 22nd, and the conference has announced that Georgia Southern football student-athletes J.D. King and Todd Bradley-Glenn will accompany head coach Chad Lunsford to the 2021 Sun Belt Media Day. Last season, the SBC accumulated an FBS-leading 21 non-conference wins in 2020, including a 3-0 record against Big 12 opponents. Two teams (Coastal Carolina and Louisiana) finished in the final AP Poll, Coaches Poll, and College Football Playoff Rankings for the first time in conference history. In addition to the conference's accomplishments on the football field, the conference boasted a 135 percent increase in TV viewership in 2020, with seven of the conference's games surpassing 1 million viewers. Over the course of the past five football seasons, the conference has posted an FBS-leading .692 winning percentage in bowl games. - Georgia Southern Football

Georgia Southern defensive lineman Gavin Adcock is looking to use the new NIL ruling to promote his aspiring music career. Many have debated for years whether or not college athletes should be paid. All that changed June 11 as the Supreme Court ruled against the NCAA in a landmark antitrust case that specifically challenged the association's ability to have national limits on benefits for athletes. Because of the ruling the NCAA quickly responded by adopted rule changes that will at least temporarily get rid of restrictions that previously prohibited all college athletes from making money. The guidelines provided by the NCAA leave a considerable amount of gray area for schools to sort through and set up a system that will create different rules and opportunities for athletes.

One of the biggest changes to come from the ruling is in relation to the NCAA being unable to restrict the amount of money athletes can generate from their name, image, and likeness. NIL, as it is being called, will allow athletes the opportunity to make money by selling their name, image and likeness rights while playing in college. Coaches, athletic directors and more specifically compliance directors throughout the country have been scrambling to keep up with the latest changes and relay them to the student athletes. Schools like the University of Miami have already caught national attention with the announcement by American Top Team to commit $540,000 to their current 90 football players over the next year for a total of $6,000 per player. - Savannah Morning News

Former North Carolina linebacker Khadry Jackson has landed in Statesboro and is set to play for the Eagles this season after venturing through the transfer portal. With the college football world continuing to deal with the transfer portal and the number of players that still don't have a destination the summer is a pretty busy time for coaches who are usually trying to take a little break. At the conclusion of spring practice Georgia Southern coach Chad Lunsford said he expected to sign about four players through the transfer portal. As of this week the Eagles have three and are expected to get the fourth in the next week. Lunsford is excited about addressing a few concerns he still had at a few positions that needed a little depth. The Eagles currently have on campus offensive lineman Liam Ryan (6-2, 308 lbs.) from N.C. State, and linebackers Khadry Jackson (6-2, 230 lbs.) from the University of North Carolina and Kevon Glenn (6-2, 230 lbs.) from Florida State. - Statesboro Herald

There is news about Georgia Southern football player James Graham, and it's not about his place on the depth chart at quarterback. In fact, the Georgia Tech transfer is now listed at wide receiver on the Eagles' roster on the Georgia Southern Athletics website. The redshirt junior (6-foot-1, 200 pounds) was a starter at QB for the Yellow Jackets and previously starred at Fitzgerald High School. Graham was expected to compete for the starting job at QB with redshirt junior Justin Tomlin, who filled in ably the past two seasons when four-year starter Shai Werts was unavailable. Graham practiced with the Eagles at the start of the spring but then was absent due to personal issues, according to head coach Chad Lunsford, and missed all of the team's scrimmages and the spring game. - Savannah Morning News

North Carolina linebacker Khadry Jackson will enter the transfer portal, according to the school. He started on the first-team defense Saturday during the Tar Heels' spring game in place of Jeremiah Gemmel, who was purposely held out of the game by coach Mack Brown to get a better look at Jackson and younger players. Gemmel will be a starter come fall, as will Eugene Asante as a second interior linebacker. Brown has pledged to play more people defensively after Gemmel and Chazz Surratt played most of the snaps the past two seasons. Jackson's decision will make the Heels much younger on the depth chart. - Raleigh News Observer

The tight ends group is deep. Prior to Harsin's arrival, Auburn went out and recruited the position hard and brought in a number of large players with great hands. Last season, John Samuel Shenker and Luke Deal played a lot of snaps while J.J. Pegues made a name for himself. Brandon Frazier was injured, but he came in as a highly touted recruit, and then 2020 recruit Landen King kept his commitment despite the coaching change. But when the first team offense lined up for A-Day, Tyler Fromm was the tight end lined up with them. Then, after the ball was snapped, Fromm caught the first pass of the entire game. He was the only tight end with a catch, and he finished with one for 13 yards. For a guy who played in just one game in 2020 and recorded no stats, running with the starters is a big leap, even considering that returning starter Shenker did not participate in A-Day. Since the Auburn offense showed that it can use up to three tight ends at a time, it seems there will be a place for the sophomore to make a difference this season. - Birmingham News

  04/14/21 - Davis BrinrSr/2024, Georgia Southern, 6-2, 207 (DS#33 QB) + More +

The last time the University of Tulsa played at H.A. Chapman Stadium, Davis Brin put on a show. What happened Saturday was less dramatic than the Nov. 19 comeback against Tulane, but Brin took another step toward the No. 1 quarterback role with a solid outing in the annual spring game. "That (Tulane) game definitely helped me gain some confidence coming into the spring, knowing that a lot of guys have my back," Brin said. "We picked up right where we left off from that game." During a conservatively called scrimmage in front of a small crowd, Brin connected on the first play with JuanCarlos Santana for a 36-yard gain. He finished 13-of-24 passing for 173 yards, showing poise and committing few mistakes. "Obviously there's some things in there that we would like to continue to keep working on, but overall I'm really pleased with his progress," coach Philip Montgomery said. "I'm pleased with the chemistry he has right now with our receivers and he's seeing the field well. We still have work to do, but I like where he's at right now." - Tulsa World

As physically challenging as football is as a sport, the mental aspect also has brought out Justin Ellis' toughness. For every two steps forward in his career, it seems the Georgia Southern redshirt senior defensive end had taken one step back. "This is always what I wanted to do," Ellis, 21, said after an Eagles practice last week. "You've got to see it through. That's how I've always looked at it...I'll put my faith in God, and whatever happens, happens." He recovered from a broken leg as a high school junior to record 19 sacks his senior season and lead Roswell to a state championship game appearance.

Ellis thought he had missed his chance to play in a Power Five conference and was considering Group of Five programs when Syracuse of the ACC offered him a scholarship after National Signing Day. But his time in Syracuse was brief and unhappy - he points to his position coach's style of coaching - so he came home after his freshman year to the Peach State. He found a much better fit at Georgia Southern, one of those Group of Five programs that recruited him at Roswell. He liked playing for defensive line coach Victor Cabral, whom he knew through summer camps. Ellis sat out the 2018 season as a transfer. - Savannah Morning News

Just who would be LSU's starting signal caller was one of the biggest questions going into this offseason, especially with Myles Brennan returning from an abdominal injury that ended his 2020 season after just three games. But it wasn't Brennan who took the first snaps on LSU's first day of spring practice on Tuesday. LSU coach Ed Orgeron said returning freshman Max Johnson, who led LSU to dramatic comeback victories in last year's final two games, was the player who went under-center first.

Orgeron said he told Johnson he'd be getting the first snaps going into the day's practice, and that it's considered a reward for the young player who helped prevent the Tigers from having their first losing record since 1999. "There's one quarterback that's 2-0 on campus here," Orgeron said, "and that's him." Still, Orgeron said all the quarterbacks took equal reps during Tuesday's practice, and that "there's no favorite" in a competition that'll likely carry over the next month, perhaps more. "The competition is open," Orgeron said, "and the best man is going to win." - Baton Rouge Advocate
