The Georgia Southern football team wrapped up their 2022 spring football season with the annual Blue/White game Saturday afternoon at Paulson Stadium. First year head coach Clay Helton got his first opportunity to hit the field with the Eagles with a good crowd on hand as around 4,000 fans came out and saw the Eagle offense put up over 700 yards of offense and 51 points as the White team beat the Blue team 51-28. Leading the offense was Buffalo transfer quarterback Kyle Vantrease who was 16-25 for 217 yards and one touchdown.

Vantrease feels the team has taken huge steps in the right direction and is excited about wrapping up spring and getting to know his teammates better. "This being my sixth year I know what we need next and that is bonding," said Vantrease. "Over the summer and into summer workouts that is the most important thing. A team that is connected is going to be a dangerous team. On the filed we just need more reps, but off the field is what is important right now." On the field Vantrease spread the ball around nicely with Houston transfer Jeremy Singleton getting the most targets (10) and receptions (6). Derwin Burgess led the way in yardage with three catches for 80 yards, while Khaleb Hood had three receptions and Sam Kennerson had the lone touchdown pass from Vantrease. - Savannah Morning News

Davis Brin passed for 244 yards and a touchdown, three different ball carriers also scored and Tulsa fended off SMU 34-31 in a see-saw game to end the regular season on Saturday. Zack Long kicked field goals of 36 and 27 yards with the latter, coming with 4:06 left in the game, providing just enough to preserve the win. Tulsa (6-6, 5-3 American Athletic Conference) was in a 17-0 hole barely more than a quarter into the contest. The Golden Hurricane rallied with 31 unanswered points into a seemingly comfortable 31-17 lead with 13:30 to go. But SMU (6-4, 4-4) rallied with two fourth-quarter touchdowns, pulling within 34-31 when Tyler Levine crashed into the end zone from the 2 to cap a 69-yard drive with 2:50 left. Tulsa's LJ Wallace recovered the ensuing onside kick and the Golden Hurricane ran the clock. The loss was SMU's first at home this season. Tanner Mordecai, who threw for 298 yards and a touchdown for the Mustangs, set the conference single-season record with 39 TDs. - Tulsa/AP College Football

Logan Wright and Jalen White each had two of Georgia Southern's seven rushing TDs and the Eagles beat Arkansas State 59-33 on Saturday, giving interim head coach Kevin Whitley his first win. Whitley, who starred as player at Georgia Southern from 1988-91, joined the staff in 2019 and was a cornerbacks coach until this week when he replaced Chad Lunsford, who was fired last Sunday. Whitley was a high school head coach for 18 years, going 49-5 (.907) with three regional titles and 18 all-state players over his final four seasons at Stockbridge, in the Atlanta area.

Wright finished with 10 carries for 208 yards and White added 157 yards on 15 carries. J.D. King, Justin Tomlin and Gerald Green each added rushing touchdowns for Georgia Southern (2-3, 1-1 Sun Belt). James Blackman threw a 19-yard TD pass to Corey Rucker to give Arkansas State (1-4, 0-1) its first lead at 19-17 with 4:38 left in the first half but Wright answered about a minute later with a 41-yard scoring run and King added a 5-yard touchdown with 2 minutes remaining in the second quarter. The Eagles took the opening kickoff of the second half and ripped off a nine-play, 65-yard drive the culminated when Tomlin scored on a 6-yard run with 10:54 to go in the third and Georgia State led the rest of the way. Blackman - who transferred from Florida State, where he ranks No. 10 in program history with 43 career TD passes - was 28-of-43 passing for 292 yards and two touchdowns. The redshirt junior threw three interceptions, including a 22-yard pick-6 by Georgia Southern's Quin Williams, before he was replaced in the third quarter by sophomore Layne Hatcher, who completed 8 of 18 passes for 151 yards and two TDs with one interception. - Georgia Southern/AP College Football
