Jack Chambers threw two touchdown passes and ran for the go-ahead score and Georgia Southern overcame four lost turnovers to beat Division II-member Savannah State 24-19 on Saturday for its first win of the season. Trailing 19-7 in the third quarter, Chambers hit Kameron Brown on a 4-yard TD strike, then ran it in from the 1 in the fourth quarter for the go-ahead TD. Alex Usry added a 35-yard field goal and Darin Smalls ended the Tigers' final drive by intercepting a D'Vonn Gibbons pass with 2:19 to play. The Buccaneers (1-4) were hurt by three interceptions and a fumble that led to all of Savannah State's points.

Gibbons' 49-yard TD run was set up by an opening-drive fumble recovery and interceptions led to D'Angelo Durham's 9-yard TD run and to two field goals by Giovanni Lugo. Chambers, 24 of 35 for 231 yards with three interceptions, hit Jaquan Williams on a 13-yard TD pass to tie the game at 7. Ronnie Harris gained 120 yards on 18 carries. Gibbons was 4 of 11 for 40 yards for the Tigers (3-2, 0-1), who were outgained 415 yards to 240. After 19 years as a Division I team, Savannah State this season is in Division II's Southern Intercollegiate Conference. - AP College Football

  10/05/19 - Amare JonesrSr/2023, Georgia Southern, 5-10, 183 (DS#124 WR) + More +

Amare Jones caught six passes for 104 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score, and Tulane beat Army 42-33 on Saturday to snap the Black Knights' 15-game home winning streak. Tulane (4-1), which hasn't started this well since going 4-1 in 1998, outgained Army 525-363 and outrushed the Black Knights 324-193, the fourth time this season the Green Wave have gone for 250 yards on the ground. The Green Wave have gone over 500 yards offensively in all but one game this season. Army's triple option was averaging 293.5 yards. Darius Bradwell scored on a 13-yard run midway through the third quarter to snap a 21-all tie, Jones scored on a 1-yard run early in the fourth and Cameron Carroll tacked on a 41-yard scamper to give the Green Wave a comfortable lead.

Army (3-2) staged a furious late rally with two scores in the final 3 minutes, Jabari Moore's 54-yard fumble return closing the gap to nine points with 2:36 left, but Tulane recovered an onside kick and held on. Tulane coach Willie Fritz and Army's Jeff Monken are well-schooled in the run game. Fritz succeeded Monken at Georgia Southern when Monken took the job at West Point six years ago, and the Green Wave excelled in this one. Army, which relies on ball control with its triple option, ran only 12 plays in the first quarter and trailed 21-7 early in the second, victimized repeatedly by big plays. - Tulane/AP College Football

  10/03/19 - Tyler BassrSr/2020, Georgia Southern, 5-10, 185 (DS#2 K) + More +

Tyler Bass kicked a 37-yard field goal in the second overtime after the Georgia Southern forced a turnover and the Eagles rallied to defeat South Alabama 20-17 on Thursday night. Bass, who kicked a 46-yard field goal to put Georgia Southern up 10-7 at halftime, missed a 32-yarder on the first possession of overtime. However, Ty Phillips blocked a 45-yard attempt by South Alabama's Frankie Onate to force a second overtime. On the Jaguars' first play, Ricky Wade Jr., strip-sacked Cephus Johnson, and Raymond Johnson III recovered. The Eagles gained six yards on three running plays before Bass' winner.

The Eagles forced overtime by going 65 yards on eight running plays, chewing up 4-minutes, 4-seconds before scoring on Wesley Kennedy III's 1-yard option pitch with 20 seconds to play. Georgia Southern (2-3, 1-1 Sun Belt Conference) ran 83 plays and had 388 yards, 310 on the ground, keeping the ball for 40½ minutes. Quarterback Shai Werts was just 9 of 17 for 78 yards but had 102 yards on 20 rushes. South Alabama (1-5, 0-2) ran just 39 plays for 247 yards and held the ball for 19:22. Johnson was 8 of 15 for 194 yards and two TDs. He had a 75-yard touchdown pass to Kawaan Baker in the first half, and the Jags had just 17 yards of offense other than that. He hit Jalen Tolbert for a 60-yard score in the third quarter and Baker for 43 yards in the fourth to set up Onate's 45-yard field goal for a 17-10 lead. Take away the three big pass plays and South Alabama, which is 0-6 against the Eagles, had 69 yards on offense. - AP College Football
