2023 ACC PLAYER OF THE YEAR/OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Jordan Travis, Florida State,...Travis was recently named a semifinalist for the Walter Camp National Player of the Year award, in addition to being a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award, Davey O'Brien Award, and the Jason Witten Man of the Year Award. The West Palm Beach, Florida, native threw for 2,755 yards and 20 touchdowns while adding seven more scores on the ground. The quarterback ranks third in ACC history in regard to single-season interception avoidance after being intercepted just twice on 324 pass attempts (0.62%), one of only three players in the nation to throw 20 or more touchdowns and two or fewer interceptions this season.

In back-to-back weeks of conference play, Travis threw for a combined 719 yards with four touchdowns, completing 61.9 percent of his passes along the way. Travis opened the season on a strong note as he completed 23-of-31 (74.2 percent) of his pass attempts for 342 yards and four touchdowns as he led the Seminoles to victory over No. 5 LSU. On three separate occasions this season, Travis was named the ACC Quarterback of the Week. Throughout the year, Travis was also named to the Davey O'Brien Award Great 8 and the Manning Award Star of the Week three times each. He earned Davey O'Brien Award National Quarterback of the Week honors on Oct. 24 after throwing for 268 yards and two touchdowns against No. 16 Duke. Additionally, Travis became Florida State's all-time leader in touchdown responsibility (97), total offense (10,554), quarterback rushing yards (1,910), and quarterback rushing touchdowns (31). - ACC Football

Jared Verse spent last week watching the NFL Scouting Combine, not as a participant but as an observer. It wasn't exactly the way many assumed the talented Florida State edge rusher would make his presence known. At one point, the 6-foot-4, 253-pound defensive end was projected as a first-round selection after a stellar first FBS season in which he led the team in tackles for loss (16.5), sacks (9) and blocked kicks (1). "I always wanted him to feel like he was doing what was best for himself," said defensive ends coach John Papuchis. "So when it came time for him to make that decision, I made a conscious effort not to weigh in too much on it other than if he asked me my opinion on something or my advice. I wanted him to come back. "I love coaching him, but I wanted him to do what was best for him. So I was super excited when he made that decision. Now the work starts."

The decision to return to FSU came down to Verse believing he could improve. He could overwhelm offensive linemen with his athleticism, but there had to be more to help him unleash his true potential. "It was getting better on the technical side of things," said Verse. "Physically, I could have left and gone to the NFL and been fine, but it's the mental side of things where I need to get better. That was something Coach [Mike] Norvell hammered home to me." It's a belief justified by watching participants in last week's Combine. "Everybody wants to get stronger, faster and bigger, but I want to be able to read the game a little bit quicker," Verse said. "At the next level, it's a lot quicker. Even at the Combine, those guys are a lot quicker. Everybody is a lot quicker than this level right now. The most anticipated quarterback competition in some time at OSU. It's at least a two-man battle between incumbent starter Ben Gulbranson and Clemson transfer D.J. Uiagalelei. There figures to be plenty of spotlight on 4-star freshman Aidan Chiles, too. Gulbranson checks the main box as to what a quarterback should do: win. Replacing an injured Chance Nolan five weeks into 2022 season, Gulbranson won seven of his eight starts. But outsiders would point out the position was hardly dynamic under Gulbranson. The Beavers' offense leaned heavily on the run game as the passing attack was pedestrian. Others push back, saying Gulbranson was an elite game manager, often calling the right play at the right time. It's hard to argue against 7-1.

Regardless, there's no harm to see whether the Beavers can do more at the position in 2023, which leads to Uiagalelei. During a three-year career at Clemson, the 6-foot-4, 235-pound Uiagalelei started 28 games, completing 515 of 861 passes for 5,681 yards and 36 touchdowns, with 17 interceptions. Moreover, Uiagalelei is a run threat, as he produced 913 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns at Clemson. On paper, Oregon State has never had a quarterback like Uiagalelei, a former 5-star recruit who competed and produced for a perennial top-10 program. But he also had accuracy issues at Clemson, and eventually fell out of favor. Is a change of scenery all Uiagalelei needs to return to stardom? That's what Oregon State plans to find out this spring, summer and August camp. - The Oregonian

The Florida Senate voted unanimously to repeal the state's name, image and likeness (NIL) law Friday, sending the bill to Gov. Ron DeSantis' desk. The 34-0 vote on the Senate floor means the bill, HB 7B, went through two committees and both chambers in this week's special session without a single vote against it. "We've done the part to push the NCAA to stop abdicating their responsibility back to the states," said Sen. Corey Simon, the former Florida State football star. "And we're now putting it on the universities to educate our kids at what their best practices are going forward."

The bill is intended to fix a perceived disadvantage for Florida schools and their athletes caused by the current structure. Florida was one of the first states to vote to allow its college athletes to make money off their name, image and likeness when the law passed in 2020. But it included some restrictions. Teams and coaches, for example, can't facilitate players' deals. Some states never passed NIL laws. Others, including Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina, have repealed, suspended or loosened them. All three of those states have big-name programs that compete for recruits against programs like Florida and Florida State. - Tampa Tribune

Florida State football coach Mike Norvell, whose team ended last season with a six-game winning streak, was rewarded with a three-year contract extension that will pay him an average of $8.05 million annually through 2029. The school released the contract Wednesday. It will pay Norvell $5.6 million in 2023, $7.6 million in 2024, $7.8 million in 2025, $8.1 million in 2026, $8.3 million in 2027, $8.6 million in 2028 and $8.8 million in 2029. He also gets a $250,000 retention bonus if he's still employed every Dec. 31. Norvell earned $4.5 million last year and would have made $7.25 million in the final year of his previous deal.

This is the second extension for Norvell, who was hired after the 2019 season. The Seminoles added a year to his contract following the 2021 season. FSU finished 10-3 last season and ranked No. 11 in the final AP college football poll. The Seminoles beat Florida State and Miami - and scored at least 45 points against both in-state rivals in the same season for the first time. FSU also was the only team to lead its conference in both total offense and total defense. Along with Southeastern Conference heavyweights Alabama and Georgia, FSU was one of three teams to rank in the top 15 in yards per play on both sides of the ball. "Coach Norvell has re-established a culture that the entire Seminole Family can appreciate," athletic director Michael Alford said in a statement. When Jaheim Bell tuned into Florida State football games, he saw an explosive offense led by dual-threat quarterback Jordan Travis. Teaming up with the Seminoles made perfect sense to the redshirt junior. "This offense is explosive," he said. "I caught a few games this season and wanted to be a part of that." Bell, a South Carolina tight end, entered the transfer portal on Dec. 6 and committed to FSU less than a week later.

It didn't hurt that Travis and offensive playmakers such as running back Trey Benson and receivers Johnny Wilson and Mycah Pittman were returning for another season. "That was a big factor in me coming here, especially with Jordan returning," Bell said. "That was a key piece to me. Just having a quarterback that is experienced [matters] because I know how that can be, playing with a quarterback who is not experienced. Jordan's return made me want to come here even more." The 6-foot-3 Bell had just completed his third season with the Gamecocks - his second as a full-time starter - where he amassed 1,058 total yards in 26 appearances. Florida State receiver Johnny Wilson is returning to the football program in 2023, giving the Seminoles another crucial piece from their 10-win season. The Battle's End Collective welcomed Wilson to its team of FSU athletes Friday afternoon, signifying the 6-foot-7, 235-pound receiver would be back for his second season in Tallahassee. He appeared in all 13 games, leading the team in receptions (43), receiving yards (897) and receiving touchdowns (5). His performance earned him second-team All-ACC. Florida State standout defensive end Jared Verse, a projected first-round NFL draft pick, announced Saturday he is staying for another season. After two stellar seasons at Albany in the Football Championship Subdivision, Verse was the most coveted player in the NCAA transfer portal in 2022. He landed in Tallahassee and proved he could play at the Power Five level. He earned first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors after leading Florida State with 14 1/2 tackles for loss, including 7 1/2 sacks, despite missing one game because of injury and being limited in several others.

He joins quarterback Jordan Travis, leading rusher Trey Benson and leading receiver Johnny Wilson in returning to play for coach Mike Norvell - and it could make the Seminoles (10-3) potential title contenders in 2023. "Obviously, the money is a big factor in it. But my biggest factor was, "What can I improve on?" Verse told ESPN after announcing his decision. Florida State safety Akeem Dent is the latest Seminole set to return to the program in 2023. The NIL collective The Battles End announced a partnership with Dent on Wednesday morning, indicating the defensive back's return for his fifth season with the Seminoles. Dent accounted for a career-high 53 tackles and 4 passes defended this season, starting all 13 games at the Buck position - a hybrid role between linebacker and defensive end. His 10 tackles in FSU's 35-31 win over Louisville on Sept. 16 was a career-high. He had 2 tackles in the Seminoles' win over Oklahoma in the Cheez-It Bowl last Thursday before leaving with an injury. Florida State defensive back Jammie Robinson has declared for the NFL Draft, announcing his decision on social media Sunday morning. "I sincerely appreciate my teammates, coaches, family and fans of the University of South Carolina and Florida State University community who have made the last four years memorable," Robinson posted on Twitter. Robinson was a first-team, All-ACC selection after leading the team in tackles (99) for the second consecutive season. The redshirt junior wrapped up his second season with the Seminoles after transferring in from South Carolina in 2021. He finished his time at FSU with 183 tackles, 12 tackles for loss with 5 interceptions, 8 passes defended, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
