N'Kosi Perry threw four touchdown passes including three in the third quarter when Florida Atlantic broke the game open as the Owls defeated Georgia Southern 38-6 on Saturday. Perry dropped a pass into a sprinting Je'Quan Burton's fingertips for a 50-yard touchdown and followed that with another third-quarter strike to John Mitchell for a 19-yard score on the left side of the end zone and a 24-6 lead. Perry added a final third-quarter TD pass of 31 yards to LaJohntay Wester, though replays appeared to show the receiver out of bounds when he made the catch. However, a review confirmed the call. Georgia Southern (1-1) scored first with Logan Wright's 22-yard first-quarter run. But in the final two minutes of the half Perry threw a 19-yard touchdown to John Mitchell and Aaron Shahriari kicked a field goal for a 10-7 lead. Nick Tronti added a 3-yard touchdown run late in the game for FAU (1-1). FAU outgained the Eagles 528-254. Perry was 19-of-27 passing for 332 yards with Wester making seven catches for 124 yards. - Florida Atlantic/AP College Football

Current FAU and former Miami Hurricanes quarterback N'Kosi Perry signed a name, image and likeness deal with Islamorada Brewery and Distillery on Wednesday. Perry signed what is believed to be the first NIL deal with a beer or liquor company for a collegiate athlete. Islamorada Brewery and Distillery said on Twitter "We are happy to announce, Islamorada Beverages is the first alcohol company to endorse an NCAA athlete through the NIL." Perry, who spent four years with the Hurricanes, started his first game for FAU this past Saturday in the Owls' 35-14 loss to the Florida Gators. During the game, the 23-year-old graduate student completed 19 of his 33 passes for 261 yards and one touchdown. While with the Hurricanes, Perry started nine games and played in 24 matchups over three seasons. - Sun-Sentinel

FAU coach Willie Taggart named former Miami Hurricanes quarterback N'Kosi Perry the Owls' starter for their season opener against the Florida Gators on Saturday. Throughout camp, the Owls had an ongoing four-way competition, including last year's starter Nick Tronti, Penn State transfer Michael Johnson Jr. and Javion Posey. Perry, a graduate transfer, spent four seasons with the Hurricanes, completing 208 of 397 passes for 2,484 yards with 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 24 games. Perry, who graduated from Vanguard High School in Ocala, Fla., played his final game with the Hurricanes against Oklahoma State in December 2020 at the Cheez-It Bowl. He went 19 of 34 for 228 yards and two touchdowns in UM's 37-34 loss. - Sun-Sentinel

Willie Taggart enters his second season at Florida Atlantic with a very crowded quarterback room. Taggart's first season in Boca Raton was overshadowed by the pandemic and the Owls ended up 5-4. But after an off-season of adding players on both sides of the ball, he believes FAU has what it takes to win C-USA's East Division. "I really like our roster. I thought we did a good job this off-season filling some needs and getting the players we needed to be efficient on both offense and defense," said Taggart while speaking at C-USA's Media Day.

"I know going into the off-season, one thing I wanted to do as the head coach was to make us a highly competitive football team. That's at every position, especially at the quarterback position, and I thought this off-season we were able to do that with the addition of (transfers) Michael Johnson and N'Kosi Perry." Perry, who transferred from Miami in April, joins an Owls quarterback room that includes holdovers Nick Tronti, Javion Posey and Willie Taggart Jr as well as Johnson. Perry has the most experience in the group. While he was with the Hurricanes, he threw for 2,484 yards and 24 touchdowns in three seasons. - Palm Beach Post

Central Michigan starting running back Kobe Lewis suffered a non-contact knee injury and will have surgery Tuesday, head coach Jim McElwain announced Thursday. "The team and ourselves just feel horrible for a great leader like that," McElwain said. Under the NCAA's redshirt rules, a player can play a maximum of four games and still keep their eligibility. Because Lewis did not redshirt as a true freshman, he has an available redshirt season and an additional year of eligibility as a result of the coronavirus waiver.

"Obviously, losing Kobe, you're not only losing a great player and an explosive player and a guy that can make plays and help you win, but you're losing a great leader," McElwain said. "A guy that is very valuable in that locker room. And yet, you know what? We're gonna get it taken care of and he's gonna comeback." Lewis, a 2018 signee from Americus, Georgia, is a three-year contributor. As a true freshman, he carried the ball 10 times for 37 yards. His breakout came as a sophomore, crossing the 1,000 yard plateau and scoring 12 touchdowns to form a solid 1-2 punch with starter Jonathan Ward. Last season, as a junior, Lewis ran for 468 and six touchdowns on 105 carries. - Central Michigan Life

Michigan receiver Ronnie Bell caught many off guard Wednesday answering a question from the media during a virtual news conference. When asked who has been the toughest defensive back he's faced so far in fall camp, Bell singled out George Johnson, a former high school quarterback and receiver from Florida who is entering his third year with the team. "You never know what you're gonna get out of George," Bell said. "George is a very unpredictable and very good DB." Johnson, rated as a three-star receiver in the 2019 class, transitioned to the defensive side of the ball when arriving at Michigan. He has yet to appear in a game for the Wolverines but is reportedly turning some heads during camp. "His technique, how he plays the game, he doesn't necessarily do it like the rest," Bell said of Johnson. "He doesn't play like the rest of them. "It's either misleading or it's - he can catch you off-guard because he's unorthodox." Head coach Jim Harbaugh said last month at Big Ten media days that the staff is still evaluating whether cornerback or safety is his best fit. - Ann Arbor News

A bigger, stronger and faster running back duo at Central Michigan? A scary proposition for Mid-American Conference opponents. The Chippewas feature two known commodities in the backfield in Kobe Lewis and Lew Nichols III. In his three seasons in a Chippewa uniform, Lewis has amassed nearly 3,000 all-purpose yards and scored 19 touchdowns; Nichols gained 597 yards in rushing and receiving and scored five TDs in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, earning the MAC Freshman of the Year Award.

Combined, they give CMU a potent one-two punch that give defensive coordinators headaches what with their ability to not only run, but also block and catch the ball out of the backfield. "Both of them have tremendous hands, so that's a plus," CMU running backs coach Cornell Jackson said. "Both of them clearly understand pass protection, so that's a plus. "Kobe's more of a slide and glide and try to find that sweet spot. Lew's the kind of guy that once he puts his foot in the ground, if you're in his way, he's taking a body part with him. Both of them are excellent runners, both of them have excellent vision." - Central Michigan Football

FAU may not have had a player selected in the 2021 NFL draft, but that didn't stop a couple of former Owls from finding an NFL home. A few hours after the draft ended Saturday evening, running back BJ Emmons signed with Seattle Seahawks while linebacker Leighton McCarthy signed with the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as undrafted free agents. Emmons, who was the No. 4 running back prospect in the nation out of high school and played at Alabama in 2016, transferred to FAU and redshirted the 2018 season after spending 2017 at Hutchinson Community College (Hutchinson, Kan.). - Sun-Sentinel

The FAU Owls added another former Power Five player to their quarterback room, with former Miami Hurricanes signal-caller N'Kosi Perry announcing Wednesday afternoon that he's transferring to Florida Atlantic. Perry, a former four-star recruit out of Ocala's Vanguard High, was a redshirt junior last year with UM and is expected to have two seasons of eligibility left after the NCAA granted all fall sport athletes an eligibility waiver for the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He redshirted in 2017 and was sporadically Miami's starting quarterback during the 2018 and 2019 seasons before being D'Eriq King's backup in 2020. The most game action he saw during the past season was in the Cheez-It Bowl on Dec. 29 after King tore his ACL in the game, with Perry going 19 of 34 for 228 yards and two touchdowns with UM's comeback attempt falling short in the Hurricanes' 37-34 loss to Oklahoma State. - Sun-Sentinel

There were 12 players at the Florida Atlantic Pro Day Tuesday morning, but all eyes seemed to be on running back BJ Emmons. During his workouts, he ran an unofficial 4.6 40-yard dash, and leapt 10.5 feet in the long jump. He also caught a handful of passes from former FAU quarterback De'Andre Johnson, and Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars and Pittsburgh Steelers scouts approached Emmons at the end of his workouts. "They asked me tough questions, but it's better to tell the truth and not beat around the bush," Emmons told reporters. "Honesty is best when you want someone to accept you into their organization." In two seasons with the Owls, Emmons rushed for 353 yards on 88 carries and seven touchdowns. Injuries played a role in his college career, however, as he only played nine games for the Owls. A consensus four-star recruit coming out of high school, Emmons played at Alabama as a freshman, rushing for 173 yards on 35 carries. Emmons had the opportunity to return for another season with the Owls after the NCAA granted student-athletes an extra year of eligibility, but chose to pursue a professional career. - Palm Beach Post

For offensive lineman Andrew Boselli, transferring to FAU for his final college football season was about opportunity and familiarity. The opportunity to showcase his ability in a way he felt like he wasn't always able to during his time at Florida State. "At Florida State, I was kind of going back and forth with a bunch of people," Boselli said. "Starting one week and the next week not starting - not really having a consistent way to show what I can contribute on the field...It made the game more frustrating. Having the opportunity to be in a fair competition has made the game a lot more enjoyable."

And being able to play under a familiar face, with FAU coach Willie Taggart coaching Boselli during his time with the Seminoles. "At Florida State, I knew he was the kind of leader I want to play for," Boselli said. "As a player, that's a big part of football. Having someone like coach Tag, someone I know I trust, that was a big key." Boselli, son of five-time NFL Pro-Bowl offensive tackle and College Football Hall of Famer Tony Boselli, spent four seasons with Florida State (2016-17, 2019-20) - making three starts in 16 career games. He credits his dad for helping him develop his skills as an offensive lineman. - Sun-Sentinel

After FAU's loss to Memphis in the Montgomery Bowl, Zyon Gilbert didn't need a lot of time to get back to his family to discuss what'd come next for his football career. Gilbert, a Montgomery, Ala. native, only had to drive a short distance from the stadium the Owls ended their 2020 season in to get to his house in his hometown. What came next was about a week of thinking and conversations with his loved ones about declaring for the NFL draft or returning to FAU for a fifth and final season, with the NCAA giving all fall athletes an extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"After the game, I drove right around the corner to the house and I talked to my parents and family about the season," Gilbert said. "I wanted to come back - finish school, get better, get stronger [and] get faster. Personally, boost my draft stock up. Just putting myself and my family in a better position." The way last season ended - three consecutive losses, not competing in the Conference USA championship game and only playing nine games due to COVID-19-related cancellations - made Gilbert feel like he had unfinished business to wrap up with FAU. - Sun-Sentinel
