SEPT 5 SOUTHERN CONFERENCE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Reuben Lowery III, So., DB, Chattanooga, Powder Springs, Ga.,...Chattanooga defensive back Reuben Lowery III had five tackles and an interception return for a touchdown as the Mocs opened their season with a 31-0 win over Wofford on Saturday. Lowery's 45-yard pick-6 early in the second quarter was the first interception of his career and made the score 17-0 in UTC's favor, while four of his tackles were solo stops, including a 2-yard tackle for loss in the third quarter. The Powder Springs, Georgia, native helped Chattanooga to its first opening-day shutout since 2016 and its first shutout of a Division I opponent since 1995. The Mocs moved up one spot to No. 11 in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 announced Monday. Other nominees: Alijah Huzzie (ETSU), Cally Chizik (Furman), Myles Redding (Mercer), Kobe Stewart (Samford) and Ed Jones IV (Western Carolina). - SoCon Football

Ailym Ford rushed for 156 yards and two touchdowns, Preston Hutchinson passed for 171 yards and a score, and Chattanooga rolled past Wofford 31-0 on Saturday in a season opener for both teams. Chattanooga took control in the first half with a rushing touchdown, passing score, pick-6 and a field goal. Ford gave Chattanooga a 31-0 lead late in the third quarter when he broke a tackle up the middle, cut to the right and outraced a defender for an 86-yard score. Ford also opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 3-yard run. Rueben Lowery III had the pick-6 in his first game as a starter for Chattanooga. Wofford had 230 total yards and three turnovers. The Terriers had a third-and-goal from the 4 with 5:14 left in the third quarter, but a bad snap resulted in Chattanooga's second fumble recovery. Jimmy Weirick passed for 133 yards with one interception for Wofford. - AP College Football

2022 PRESEASON ALLSTATE AFCA GOOD WORKS TEAM NOMINEE: McClendon Curtis, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga,...Curtis would be the first Moc on record to earn the honor since it was established in 1992, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team is one of the most coveted community service awards in college football. From the 114 nominees, the final roster of 23 award recipients will bring together 11 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision; 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA); and one honorary head coach.

To be considered for a spot on the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, each player must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining strong academic standing. "McClendon checks all the boxes," Coach Rusty Wright explained. "He's not only a leader on this football team, but he was asked to take a second term on the NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee Student-Athlete Connection Group this year (one of 12 overall members-all divisions). "His stature in the community is even larger than his 6-6, 328-lb., frame. He is more than deserving of consideration." - Chattanooga Football

2022 PRESEASON WALTER PAYTON AWARD WATCH LIST: RB Ailym Ford, Chattanooga, Jr., 5-9, 213,...Ford is already honored first with preseason all-conference and later All-America consideration. He enters the campaign with 2,244 yards and 20 touchdowns looking to become the only Moc with three 1,000-yard campaigns ahead of the trio of Eldra Buckley (2005, 2006), Jacob Huesman (2014, 2015) and Derrick Craine (2015, 2016). "Ailym has an incredible impact on our program," Coach Rusty Wright stated. "It's not just on the field, which is obvious and why he's under this consideration in the first place. He's in this position because of what he does off the field. "He is an elite worker be it on the practice or the weight room or the classroom. Ailym has a chance to make his mark as the best running back in Chattanooga history." He rushed for 1,071 yards on 203 carries with 11 touchdowns in 2021 sharing totes with Tyrell Price (133-853-9). - Chattanooga Football

2022 PRESEASON BUCK BUCHANAN AWARD WATCH LIST: DL Devonnsha Maxwell, Chattanooga, Sr., 6-3, 296 (2021 Finalist),...Maxwell finished 14th in the voting a year ago with his production belying what position he actually plays for the Mocs. The common misconception is that "D-Max" (emphasis on the Max) is a defensive end. With 12.0 sacks and just 7.5 shy of the Southern Conference record, it's an easy assumption that he's out wide with his ears pinned back going after the quarterback snap after snap.

Maxwell is actually a tackle. The sheik term is 3-technique meaning he has to work through guards, centers and tackles. His production is impressive considering the number of eyes on him every play on the interior of the line. "D-Max is a major part of our success defensively," Coach Rusty Wright shared. "He is a disruptive force at the 3-technique. "He is a leader on this football team and has a bright future ahead." Maxwell is a consensus preseason All-America after making virtually every squad a season ago. D-Max recorded 42 tackles with 15.5 for loss and 12.0 sacks. He set the school record sacks in a game with 5.0 in the Rail Rivalry triumph over ETSU against a Bucs offensive line that had allowed just four sacks in the previous six games to start the season. - Chattanooga Football

2022 PRESEASON ALL-SOUTHERN CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM (COACHES): OL McClendon Curtis, Sr., Chattanooga,...Curtis was a first team All-SoCon selection who was a bit overshadowed by NFL first-rounder Cole Strange. Strange's senior trip was similar with little national fanfare entering his final campaign before continuing a dominating career. Curtis looks to follow that pattern. He and junior tackle Colin Truett return as starters from an O-line that was integral to the squad averaging 205.5 rushing yards per game, the highest average since 2016 (206.3). The Mocs rushed for more than 170 yards in all but two games including the narrow loss to VRBO Citrus Bowl Champ Kentucky. - Chattanooga Football

2022 PRESEASON ALL-SOUTHERN CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM (COACHES): DL Devonnsha Maxwell, Sr., Chattanooga,...Maxwell is a returning All-American earning first team recognition a year ago from Stats Perform and Phil Steele and second team on three other lists. He has his eyes squarely on two other pass-rush legends at Chattanooga with SoCon career sack leader Davis Tull and season record holder Keionta Davis. Maxwell had 12.0 sacks in 2021 raising his career total to 29.5. That fell 1.5 shy of Davis' season mark set in 2015. His career number is 7.5 short of Tull (2011-14). - Chattanooga Football
