It's a three-man battle at quarterback as the Chippewas look to replace the graduated Quinten Dormady. That trio comprises senior David Moore, redshirt freshman Daniel Richardson, and junior Ty Brock, a transfer from Sam Houston State. Moore was highly effective in four starts a year ago, completing 57.3 percent of his passes for 1,143 yards and five touchdowns when Dormady was sidelined with an injury. Brock is the late comer to the party. He was not in spring practice nor was he in Mount Pleasant in the summer. Still, his track record is strong: He became the starter early in his freshman season (2018) at Sam Houston State and in two years with the BearKats he completed 54 percent of his passes for 3,885 yards and 24 touchdowns.

In 2018, he was a finalist for the Jerry Rice Award, which goes to the top freshman in FCS. "He's able to do some things that the others can't do with his feet," McElwain said, adding that Brock compares favorably to Tommy Lazzaro, who last season frequently spelled Dormady in goal-line and short-yardage situations to take advantage of his running ability. "There's some things that (Brock) does, from being able to throw on the run, being able to use his feet and athletic ability, that probably is a little bit different than the other two," McElwain said. - Morning Sun

Central Michigan starting offensive tackle Luke Goedeke underwent knee surgery and will miss the 2020 season. Coach Jim McElwain shared the news with reporters during his Webex press conference Oct. 5. "He's gonna miss this season," McElwain said. "The surgery went great, he's in really good spirits." Last season, Goedeke started all 14 games for the Chippewas at right tackle and was the team's highest graded player according to Pro Football Focus. He committed just five penalties throughout the season and played a large part in CMU having a pair of 1,000-yard rushers in Jonathan Ward and Kobe Lewis. Goedeke came to Central Michigan in 2018 as a walk-on after one season at UW-Stevens Point. - Central Michigan Life

After a long offseason away from the spotlight, Central Michigan's football program is set to hold a training session modeled after the NFL Scouting Combine to showcase the players and their abilities. The program is hosting the event on Saturday inside Kelly/Shorts Stadium. "This will be fun for (the players)," coach Jim McElwain said on "The Coach Mac Show," which aired Thursday. "Being able to come out on a Saturday morning here and execute the NFL Combine." Typically, the NFL Combine puts players through a series of drills that test the player's athletic ability. There are two sets of drills typically executed, one set being done by all participants within the combine and another set that is position-specific.

Most years see all players run the 40-yard dash, the 3-cone drill and participate in the bench press, broad jump and vertical jump. There are plenty of other position-specific drills that test the player's ability to execute various movements and abilities. McElwain mentioned on his show that Saturday's workout will be structured similarly. "It's something that I think has been pretty good," McElwain said, "because you can work on some twitch and some things like body movement and those type of things with these drills." McElwain also mentioned that the event will be recorded. There is potential for NFL scouts to attend the event as well. It will also allow the Chippewas to take the game field, something they don't do often as they practice on a trio of practice fields surrounding Kelly/Shorts Stadium. - Central Michigan Life

Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reported the football team was the first to make its way back to campus, the other teams are expected to return at a later date. A team spokesman said players were only able to return if their remote coronavirus tests were negative. At this point, the department has not confirmed if any players tested positive. Student-athletes who have returned to campus have already returned negative tests and would only test further if anybody exhibits signs of COVID-19. Players, coaches and staff members have been given a symptom checklist to fill out each day, and it remains the person's discretion if they are healthy enough to enter the facility. "The health and safety of our students is always our top priority," CMU Athletic Director Michael Alford said in a statement. "We have been in constant communication and planning with campus partners and health officials in preparation for a return to campus. We will also follow all state guidelines put in place and all activities will be voluntary as defined by the NCAA." - Central Michigan Life

The first time Joe Staley wore a Central Michigan uniform, the freshman from Rockford lined up as a tight end and wore number 87. That year, he caught 11 passes for 130 yards and a score. Fast forward nearly two decades, and Staley is retiring from the NFL after a 13-year career as the San Francisco 49ers' starting left tackle. He announced his retirement Saturday via Twitter hours after the 49ers acquired Trent Williams in the NFL Draft, another left tackle. Having suffered a broken fibula, a broken finger and a hand injury, Staley is retiring due to health concerns. "Last season was a dream to be a part of, having the opportunity to chase a championship," Staley said in his retirement statement. "But, it was by far the most difficult on me any my family. My body was breaking down with a variety of injuries and a deteriorating neck condition, and the constant discomfort affected every aspect of my life." - Central Michigan Life

Jim McElwain has found another option at quarterback. After transfer quarterback Jett Duffey was denied admission and senior David Moore's suspension appeal was denied, the Chippewas were left in search of another option to compete with redshirt freshman Daniel Richardson. The team may have found its answer in Sam Houston State transfer Ty Brock, who committed to the Chippewas in a tweet on Wednesday. "I want to thank all the people who have helped me reach this opportunity," Brock tweeted. "I have a special family and an amazing girlfriend who have had my back through thick and thin. Thank you also to my teammates and coaches at SHSU for going to battle with me the past couple years."

Brock is a redshirt sophomore from College Station, Texas, and comes to Central Michigan with two years of eligibility. If he graduates from Sam Houston State on time in the summer, he will be eligible to play immediately. In his freshman year with the Bearkats, Brock was a finalist for the Jerry Rice Award, an annual honor for the best FCS freshman. He was also named an honorable mention freshman All-American after throwing for 2,417 yards and 15 touchdowns. His sophomore year saw him struggle, as he threw for 1,468 yards, nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions. With the addition of Brock, the Chippewas now have seven quarterbacks on roster. Brock will join Richardson, sophomores Tyler Shearer and George Pearson as well as freshman Tyler Pape in competing for the starting job. - Central Michigan Life

The fate of one Central Michigan football player for the first half of the upcoming season has been decided. And not in a positive way for the player or the program. In early October, Central Michigan football confirmed that David Moore had been suspended for one full year (365 days) by the NCAA. According to the school, the starting quarterback was suspended by The Association for testing positive for a banned substance. The substance was subsequently confirmed to be an unspecified over-the-counter nutritional supplement.

In announcing the suspension, CMU confirmed that the university would be appealing the NCAA-mandated suspension. Earlier this month, it was reported that the appeal would take place at some point this month. Saturday, the school's student newspaper, Central Michigan Life, reported that the appeal has been denied. The paper cited a source with direct knowledge of the situation as the basis for its report. Thus far, the Central Michigan football program has not confirmed the development. With the appeal denied, Moore's suspension will run through Oct. 7 of this year. - Central Michigan Life
